Well, before I did that, I decided I would check the PSN for any new charms and lo and behold: MANDATORY UPDATE. i literally just updated last week. and this current update is seriously ****ed up. a video editor? i don't need that and i definitely don't need to be force fed that BS. dang. anyway, anyone else grieved at this? i figure this belonged here in SW, you guys eat this stuff up.
Aren't game updates on PS3 rediculously slow a lot of the time? e.g. have to download it, then install it? I'm not just insulting it, I'm just curious from memory of watching friends.
We wouldn't be angered if the download speeds weren't so horrendous compared to every other platform.

They aren't 3 hours slow, but what takes 20-30 minutes on PSN, (or in MLB 10 the Show's case 1 hour for a huge update) takes 1/3 the time or less on XBL or Steam.

You do choose. The software doesn't get downloaded until you go to the video section and download it. And we haven't had an update in a quite a while and this particular update probably took 5 minutes? Maybe less?

Ok that would be awful. I remember when I upgraded to an elite, and everything was speedy (like.....a minute MAX), even the NXE update was done in 12-15, and that's huge.

is it as bad as steam i got empire total war after few months of release(i know no ps3) it took 3 hours for downloading all patches i think i would have prefered to have it as an option on things like this

This i have lost all interest in my ps3 after this. Even worst you lose your save files. games like need speed that i play ahev a ******* huge 750 mb update that i just cant download. Add in all the updates and the fact that you have no save files anymore i dont even feel like playing the games anymore
i dont get "angered" by these updates, but i do get annoyed. sony keeps having these small updates every few weeks to a month apart and they are annoying. PSN is slow (its not my connection), so its annoying when you just want to jump on your ps3 for a lttile while. i wish they would only do a few huge updates a year instead of these small stupid updates every few weeks
C'mon, updates are good!! Something which other consoles are deprived off, we will get an update for 3D Viewing, motion controls etc. Its a nice feature.

Playstation updates are pretty spread out now.....its just that they had to do an unplanned one a couple of months ago for the whole security ....other wise it would have been quite a while from the previous update....
also, when you take alot of time in between playing your PS3 games or logging on to the PSN, this situation would happen to you....it would seem like it is often, but its not.......if you updated when the whole linux removal thing happened, like most.....then it would not have seemed like it was just a 2 week break in between updates...
just play your PS3 more....if you can't afford to buy the games....just rent some....you are missing alot of great games.

to clarify i HAVE turned my PS3 on, i just haven't played a game on it in a few months. that should account fot the discrepancy there. and the update wasn't interfering with me playing the game but with viewing the PSN.
Tell me about it. Especially given that those shoved-in apps on the ps3 firmware WON'T GO AWAY. Even if I refuse to install them, I can't make the icons go away. PS Home, that stupid F@H app, and the photo viewer app are all stuck on there on my ps3. And also refusing to update since they're trying to remove Linux support, and now I've seen one form of Linux that would be damned useful to me (specifically for the ps3).

Ironically enough, you have to update to access the PSN in any way, shape or form, and that includes going to the store or seeking to access any new demo's or themes they might have published. The **** you put up with because it's a $ony.

no. i'm implying that i shouldn't be forced to update my system to have a video editor and picture viewer. i bought a PS3 to play games. i have a computer for the other stuff.
i dont mind having to dl them i just hate having to sit through the dl AND the install. sometimes if i hadnt turned my ps3 on in a minute and im really hyped up to play a game then i turn on my PS3 and have to sit through that, i just lose all motivation to play the game by the time its done. im already sucked into my 360 or my wii which BOTH have considerably loss updating times...
