To disagree with alot of people on here, I've been gaming since the 80's and with this gen (with the exception of a couple games) I've been slowly losing interest. I don't own a 360 or PS3 and as of yet there's been nothing that's made me want to get either of them. The Wii's been decent up to this point but I have to say E3 wasn't all that encouraging. I'm kind of surprised more people don't feel this way; lowered expectations, maybe?

So yeah, I'm finding it boring.

svetzenlether

Different =/= lowered, I'm a gamer of the eighties too. The crap games to great games ratio is better now than it was when we started gaming. Well, on the PS3 and 360 anyway. The Wii is approaching the eighties Atari crap games surplus.

There were a LOT of crap games back in the NES era, for sure. But I think the bars have leveled off to the point where, now, instead of a crap-to-great game ratio, it's more of a moderately bad-to-moderately good game ratio, especially for the 360/PS3 IMO. The Wii may have a ton of crap, but the great games on it are in fact GREAT, just a bit too few and far between, which doesn't look to changing any time soon.

The great games on the 360 and PS3 are great too, and their are more of them, and far more frequently. I won't say it's a "fact" they are great, but they do have certain inherent qualities which any reasonable gamer not driven by an agenda can recognize, just as I can recognize the inherent quaity of a game like Mario Galaxy, while also mentioning that it does nothing for me personally.

Theres tons of great games this gen Forza 2 and VF 5 online are 2 under appreciated games but really the only complaint I have right now is the lack of Jrpgs but that will soon change once I get to play Tales of Vesperia, The Last Remnant and Infinite Undsicovery this year.

Yes, this generation is missing something and I dunt know what. I think it might be the huge lack of variety. Thats the only explanation I can think of. Huge overload of shooters. Overall I haven't enjoyed this generation more than past gens. I find myself playing PS2/1 games more ever than before. Most of the games I buy for current gen consoles just get one playthrough and then get slung aside to collect dust. Not like lots of the master pieces from older gens that get about 20 playthroughs and still never get boring.

Shooters make up the minority of releases on all three platforms, fact. In fact, Mature games are the minority of releases on each platform. On my 360 I have JRPGs, RPGs, "Shooters" (FP and TP), Puzzle Games, RTS, Racing, Sports, 3-D Fighters, 2-D Fighters, Action, Adventure, Survival Horror, Rythm, Hardcore Shmups, and hybrid games that defy one broad genre. Thats plenty of variety.

I'm confused where are all these amazing JRPGs, Survival Horror games, Adventure, & Platformers. Cause I'm definetaly not seeing them at all. Either that or I've been living under a rock these past few years. Sure I guess theres some variety if you count games off xbox live arcade/wii virtual console/PSN Store. Most of it is all shovelware crap to me. No interest in whatever select few racing games there are right now. Fighters are not my thing but even fighers there don't seem to be that many.

It can't really be denied that shooters this generation far out number any other genre.

Online integration is more important than ever, finally we have (at least on PS3 and 360) a unified online platform, tehre's been HUGE open world games that just couldn't be done last gen (Assassin's Creed), INCREDIBLE amounts of enemies on screen. And we have fresh experiences in Wii because of the motion sensing.

I think this generation has pushed the bar as far as any other before it has. But that's just my opinion.

I think theres too much shooters out for sure but I wouldn't say this gen is completely boring, let's wait another 2 years before judging this gen because theres still so much big games coming out.

I've been pretty bored and disappointed myself. Anytime I play one of the "big" games this gen, it comes off as exciting for about 3 hours...then I just end up feeling like it's nothing special.

I've found pretty much every huge, epic AAA, AAAA, AAAA/E release since this generation started are only engrossing for a couple of days at best, then I lose interest in them, if that's what you mean by boring.

In my house, only Halo3 and CoD4 have been getting more disc-tray time since their respective release(s)...

67gt500

I have been waiting for someone to say this because this is EXACTLY how I feel this gen. Except for mgs4...That I still love and will always love. Guilty as charged.

I don't like how almost all these companies are waiting till the end of the year to blow their video game load all over the market. it was like this last year too, everyone had to wait till november to get any sort of quality, sans the sporatic hit, like Halo 3, and Warhawk.

This year so far it's been all about MGS4, and GTAIV. Outside of that, all the other huge titles are ALL coming out late this year.

I'm tired of this. Next year is looking a tad more promising, with FFXIII, inFamous, KZ2, and who knows what else coming out earlier in the year.

I just hope they have more "monthly hit" games. rather than one hit in the first 9 months of the year, then POW, at leat 5-10 games everyone has to own.

*sigh*

This generation is boring because: 1. Socom and Final Fantasy, two of Sony's hugest titles, haven't released yet. 2. no Half-Life 3, just buyable episodes with last-gen graphics (plus improvements obviously) 3. No Street Fighter games yet. 4. Unreal Tournament III was a hit and miss. 5. Square-Enix still exists. Squaresoft=cool; Enix=cool; Square-Enix=not cool. I think you get the picture. 6. Call me crazy but I'd like to blame Microsoft. I have a feeling they are at least a little responsible. 7. Sega is no longer in the console wars after their Dreamcast (greatest console ever) lost last generation. Microsoft took it's place. 8. I don't know if Handhelds count but handheld games are just terrible this gen. 60% Kiddy games 30% high-graphics games with horrible gameplay, bugs and lack of content, 10% Good. We need Golden Sun 3, F-Zero and a BETTER pokemon game (for god's sake its been the same for years) 9. The price of games in the U.S. has increased 20% this generation but replay value hasn't increased that much so you're paying 60 bucks for 8 hours of fun (yay?) 10. For PC gaming only ---> Windows Vista. Thank you Microsoft.......thank you so much........

While I think they are too many shooters, and not nearly enough platformers, regardless of that, in my humble opinion, we are in the greatest generation in gaming history to date. Amount of sheer quality in this generation is ridiculous.

i dunno why, but there is something missing this generation, there are some great games out there, but then i dunno some games are just missing something that was there every other gen.

I find this gen is getting more boring as the months pass. Like MGS4 and Halo 3 were fun i actually couldnt stand GTA4, but there is just that "fun" factor missing in a lot of games this gen.

anyone else feel this way?

IkeandPit

I feel the same way, but I dont think it's the actual quality of games, but the pace of how things are going these days. Everything is so fast and naturally, our attention span is VERY short. So a game doesnt last as long.

This gen isn't too boring. Only problem is, technology is changing really fast so prices are going to be skyhigh next gen.

This gen has great quality games, but the main problems are:

1) Games are shorter than last gen on average, especially FPS games. I wish we would stop seeing some 6-hour WW2 shooters please. Hopefully this will be resolved once the developers are more fimilar with current-gen technology. Its only the first game from each developer thats the shortest IMO, since they want to hurry up to make their current-gen debut. Once the transition from last-gen to current-gen is complete, it should be fine.

2) More expensive hardware. Ever wonder why the PS3 was $600 when first released, and why there are three current SKUs for the Xbox 360? It may take some time before the PS3 can phase out the PS2, since the current price different is too big.

3) For us PC gamers, we are worried than console multiplats are reducing the complexity of our games.

Not boring, but kind of stuck with the same, i thought that the shooter age will be over by now, but they keep launching shooter after shooter, maybe its because i dont like them, but for me the industry needs more LBP and Spore and less COD.

It's good enough although not the best. my biggest concern with this gen is there are no games that i would be playing 5-10 years down the line. starcraft 2, dragon age and diablo 3 etc might fix that soon enough ;)

For me, most of the 'big' games turned out to be a bit disappointing. There have been a few gems here and there, but we've mainly just seen a huge amount of uninspired sequels.

Unfortunately, graphics seem to be more important than gameplay this gen. :(

Overall i've had some good times with current gen games, but this time of the year is usually boring. All the current good games are already out and the next big name ones aren't out for a few months. The only games I can say im intrested in up until mid October are Mercenaries 2 and BIAHH

Before MGS4's release, i could have agreed with ya TC, but putting aside the rest of the games, MGS4 saves this gen single handedly.

It's great so far, imo, for shooters. But I miss out on Silent Hill (been pretty damn long now) and a true Resident Evil game (you know, with zombies and tyrants- tho 4 was fun). Bioshock and Halo3 have great music though!

Boring it's not the word I'd use more like not up to par, I'm seeing myself enjoying more the games that i missed for PS2 and GC (thank you, BC!) than the games that have been released since this gen started.
