I've put in about 10-12 hours so far and I'm really enjoying it. The shooting is pretty clunky to start off with but as you level up certain stats your aim improves. The story seems pretty interesting so far, got a few directions it could go. The dialogue is great and the dynamic dialogue system works well.

Sure the graphics are pretty bad and the animation is off, and yes I have run into a few bugs. And yes the AI can be attrocious, and playing stealthily is very difficult but the game is still very enjoyable, for me at least.

What say you?

Honestly, I don't usually let reviews dictate my purchases but money is tight these days so I've got to go with the last option.

Ye i like what i have played so far, its just lacking in polish. It leans far more on the RPG than action side though, its all about skills and dice rolls, not accuracy and cover. I'm planning on going full martial arts and toughness and just beating the hell out everyone.

It's in the mail. I could use a espionage RPG right about now. I'll just have to judge for myself how bad it is.

I'll be trying it eventually, sure it got a 6 here, but Gamespot's review is the lowest score on Metacritic, so that won't be bothering me.

It's a good game at its core, sadly it's core is surrounded by crap. Crap visuals, crap voice acting, glitches etc.

Solid RPG elements, Choices, Gameplay and Story though.

I've been playing it for a few days now.Haven't seen any annoying bugs, haven't had a problem with the gameplay (it's not fantastic, but it's not bad either), and I really love the innovative roleplaying ideas that the game is loaded with.

It's one of the better RPGs of the gen, and certainly pushes the boundaries of what any of the bigger companies have been doing. Of all of the recent RPGs (and I play most of all of them), it's up there alongside The Witcher and Vampire Bloodlines in terms of actual roleplaying, and features better roleplaying options than anything Bioware or Bethesda have ever made (imo).

It's sort of sad to see people pass up on the game because of a few bad reviews, but it's the sort of game that only RPG fans can appreciate, so the scores make sense.

Haven't been up to date with Alpha Protocol, but what's so innovative about it? Looked like any sort of Bioware knock-off, Obsidian styIe to me.

And when you mean roleplaying, you just mean the whole "choices" thing correct? Bloodlines and the Witcher are worlds apart from any other RPG, and between themselves, in terms of how they approach roleplaying, though their whole "choice" things are somewhat similar I guess.

Meh, still think Bloodlines is way better than Witcher in terms of choice, and Witcher way better at combat. The Witcher just tried too hard to be "grey", whereas Bloodlines gave you really obscure choices which can't even be measure on a good or bad scale. And the Witcher has my fav combat mechanics in a RPG ever (especially with those hardcore mods), even better than Baldur's Gate, but the less said about Bloodlines combat, the better :P

I having a LOT of fun with this game, even more than with ME1 + ME2 combined. I'm doing the stealth route and its working very VERY well.

So far, no bugs. IDK what Kevin V hated so much about this game, the only thing bad is the couch animation and the AI being not that bright.

Some screens:

Conversation-wise:

  • Your chance to select responses is timed, making the conversation flow better and keeping you on your toes as to decision-making.
  • The dialogue choices aren't simply good/bad, unlike most of Bioware's recent games - you've got a range of things like suave, professional, casual, joking, aggressive, resolute, etc. The game encourages you to mix these up, and rewards you for experimenting rather than picking the same option every time
  • Conversations happen in real time - the game suggests that you stall enemies in conversations while your endurance recharges.
  • There's no persuasion skill, but instead you gain new dialogue options from gathering intel from dossiers, files and other people. This will not only give you hidden dialogue options, but may hint at the best ways to get intel from people.
  • If a conversation goes smoothly and persuasively, this doesn't necessarily give you the best outcome. For example, sweet-talking information off someone may result in them betraying you later on, but torturing the info out of them might keep them quiet.
  • It can actually be beneficial to get people to disapprove of you rather than get along with everyone - this could make them angry at you and thus more likely to slip out information, or it could prevent your handlers from getting too emotionally attached during missions, clouding their judgement (according to the intro).

Anyway, in short, the conversation system is just far more advanced than most other games. Fallout 2 and Vampire Bloodlines might be better, but I can't think of a game this gen that has topped AP's dialogue options.

And when you mean roleplaying, you just mean the whole "choices" thing correct? Bloodlines and the Witcher are worlds apart from any other RPG, and between themselves, in terms of how they approach roleplaying, though their whole "choice" things are somewhat similar I guess.FrozenLiquid

Mainly the choices, yeah.
Like The Witcher, AP offers you a ton of equally-important grey choices to make - especially since it's an espionage game, where you can't be sure of who you can trust, or how serious a threat any of the factions pose.
And like Vampire Bloodlines (or maybe Deus Ex), there are a number of ways to approach any situation, and conversations can play out in all sorts of ways.

I laughed real hard.

Why do some people need to validate their game purchases that wasn't scored high from one of the critics by coming here and asking us if we're enjoying the game or not? I mean..sure the game probably isn't that great, you bought it, and it has a lot flaws. But, that's okay. It's your money. Just play the game and be merry. It's your money, your time, and your game. Have fun. ;)

I haven't tried it yet, love the earlier stuff from Obsidian so I'll get to it ..when it's cheaper and patched. But good to hear some positive comments about it too, especially the choice/convo system. Doesn't look too bad in the screenies either.

I canceled my pre-order yesterday and picked up Alan Wake. I was so hyped for it and its disappointing to see it score so low because of bugs. I cant justify paying full price for it, but after a few patches and price drops i will get it.

My copy will be here Tuesday or Wednesday. I have been waiting on this game too long to bail out on it. I have watched enough in streams to know it is about what I was expecting and I know I'll enjoy it. It would not be the first low scoring game that I liked either... and it certainly will not be the last. Honestly, I would much rather play a game and come away thinking it is a bit underrated than play a hype train game only to discover how overrated it actually is.

I haven't run into bugs yet, nor funky AI. So far this game is a solid 7.5 - 8.0.

Wonky animations DOES NOT justify a 6.0 score, as for the other complains as I said earlier I haven't run into any of the so so called "complains". B

on PC it's a complete techincal mess.

Mouse issues weird re-aligning problems.

Gun play is sort of horrific till you start getting skills.

Even then the skill wheel is horrible. wait there is no skill whell you have to go in and choose

Customization is pretty weak. On your charater

Overall it's a standard game. It's just really mediocre. Fun but mediocre

Ok, I got my hands on the PC version and I have to say I'm enjoying it so far. It isn't fantastic, but it's playable and has been pretty successful at keeping my attention all day. Yes the graphics are outdated but I've seen worse. Gameplay-wise it reminds me of the first Mass Effect where the better your stats the more accurate the gunplay. I enjoy the hand to hand so far, but there is some serious janky control issues going on, but it's no worse than any GTA I've ever played.

My take is, if you know what you are getting into here, it isn't all that bad..If you can get over the graphics, you might even be surprised that you came away liking it. It just needs more polish. If Obsidian could do a sequel (not likely to happen) what Bioware did with Mass Effect 2, it could be awesome. ME 2's gameplay is perfectly suited for this. And fix the stealth, it's terrible.

The opening few levels remind me of MGS4 alot.

The game is technically messy - glitches, wonky animations, shoddy A.I,graphics that look worse than many PS3/360 launch titles.

But despite all that I'm enjoying it. Its actually more of an RPG than ME or oblivion now I come to think of it.

This game gives a really, really bad first impression. I can't help but think some reviewers were stuck on that when thinking of the final score.

Im about 7 hours in, and honestly, I find it hard putting it down. I'm yet to run into any glitches, as the review said, and the graphics aren't bad, they're just very plain. The enviroments remind me of the house you begin in on Heavy Rain.

The gameplay aspect is it's strong point, it's excellent, as are the various choices you can make during the game, all of which seem to have large repercussionson the game (Have to wait for a second playthrough to see)

It just really lacks polish, which is odd since they claimed it was delayed to add polish.

I can't see installing a game that has a ton of bugs and glitches.

I love RPGs, but I appreciate well-written reviews that keep me from making bad game purchases.

Your loss, more peoplpe that dont play it the more unnapreciative whiners well have to listen to.

Oh please. Games are expensive. If he doesn't want to buy the game, he doesn't have to. Don't act so condescending.
