Anyone else starting to notice this in some of Gamespot's newer reviews?

It seems as though some of Gamespots new reviewers are starting to penalize games for being to hard. WTF? Noobish reviewers like Lark Anderson and Ryan Davis have done just this in their reviews of Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn and Advance Wars: Days of Ruin. Do you think they should lower a games score for being to hard? I don't.

It's because Gamespot has clearly changed their target audience towards a more younger and ignorant-gaming crowd; of course they will take points off for being hard.

Anyone remember the DMC3 review "teh degree of teh hardness  !!!!" Games can be hard but I would say Advance War: DoR is hard, it's more frustrating than anything.

They can. Imo most games I've finished on the hardest difficulty were just right for my skill level but if a game is cripplingly hard on normal settings it can ruin a game.

I think that medal should only be given out to a game that's extremely hard in an unfair way like Ninja Gaiden on the NES. As far as I know, Advance Wars isn't unfair in terms of difficulty.

Lots of games were hatefully difficult back then. Like pretty much any Konami game for the NES.

Yeah, that's right, make them target a niche market of gamers who are AMAZING at games, yeah the entire gaming population doesn't want balanced reviews, they want those for hardcore gamers... NOYCE!

One thing I do notice:

GS reviews before 2006 were just BETTER, More informative, unbiased.

Gerstsman, Shoemaker, Kasavin, Calyco, Navarro and Ekberg were the good ones.

Well I must be superman when it comes to srpg's then, because I didn't find Radiant Dawn to be THAT hard, or the other Advance Wars for that matter. Just because some people can't beat the tougher games it doesn't mean a game should be considered bad imo. It lowers standards for everybody ftl.

Mmm, actually I have noticed it. Games shouldn't be given a lower score unless it is ridiculously hard (ie. silver surfer for the NES) or extremely easy, but saying a game that can be frustrating, challenging, and tough is a worse game than one that is easier is just dumb.

if u think like that, what the point GS give a review here, not all peoples like you, GS gave a review based on a standard level of gamers, not for hardcore only, and not for casual only. But if u think u are good enough, we never give a d**n about it..

Half of the bad things on gamespot for Uncharted was the fact that it was hard. (it was challenging on normal, it was by far not hard to the point where you'd lower points for it)

i'll take their word on advance wars as prior advance wars were too frustrating in sp campaigns once u get to a certain spot. it becomes less strategy and becomes a memorization game.

What confuses me about that game is that I nearly completed that, I got to the last boss. And at the time I was like 8 or something, possibly slightly younger. Yet now I have trouble with games. Maybe I just don't have the patience for newer games. Another example is Shining Force. I downloaded that for my Virtual Console and ive been playing it almost non-stop, yet even with the best gamecube games (save RE4 and Fire Emblem) my attention wasnt held for that long :?

Thank you. I have a freind who is 38 and he always tells me how hard a game is, then I play it and find out it is really just normal difficulty for me. Also that is why there is an EASY and sometimes VERY EASY settings on most games.

It seems weird, since all Fire Emblem and Advance Wars games til now have been sometimes challenging but never frustrating(to me anyway). It's kinda messed up too, I mean you have infinite time to plan your moves in a TURN based strategy game. I don't really see how that can be too hard, unless it's something ridiculous like 50 to 1 odds or something.

Is it hard or just frustrating? I think there is a difference. COD4 on Veteran- hard, very hard but not frustrating. Some games (memory is killing me now for examples) are just frustrating.

exactly, it seems as though most people on here are fine with a game that challenges them but they dont seem to understand that a game that is too hard is one that constantly frustrates the player by throwing brick wall difficulty curves at every passing section. Maybe some people enjoy replaying the same section over and over again for 3 hours, but im sure most normal people appreciate a game that tests the player while he is actually having fun.

yup uncharted uncharted did not get AAA because they said the AI in the game is too good. wow how come my 53 year old mother in law can beat on crushing mode. gamespot your just not good at games look at lair i bet they played it for 5 mins and gave up on it when in fact the use score is way above the sites reviews because the users had played it more than 5 mins. and got used to the controls.

This isn't anything new, the only thing that's "new" about it is that now they seem to have much lower standards of what "hard" is. Advance Wars: Days of Ruin isn't rediculously hard until the last few missions, and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn isn't that much harder than Path of Radiance, and Path of Radiance got AA.

People claim they want realistic games, but they really dont, they want esthetically realistic. This was the problem with Uncharted, Everyone is like look how good it looks and sounds and stuff. Wait? you die when u get shot a few times, enemies actually make an effort to kill you? you cant blast your way through an area with a plasma gun? This is to hard wah!

Mmm... I hate that. Hard games are fine, it's only when the game is actually UNFAIR that it should be penalized. Eg glitches, ridiculous AI, dodgy camera stopping you from beating your enemies etc. I personally find that if a game is supposed to be hard, i'm MORE inclined to buy it. (Ninja Gaiden: Black on hard mode was just plain awesome!)

One big question, why was Uncharted penalised for being supposedly hard? It's utter cake-walk compared to the likes of DMC3 and Metal Arms... (Both of which rock)
