To me its a rental game at best. The campaign in the first 1 was horrible and the multiplayer gets old fast. The 2nd one is better but not by much. Compared to the Halo, COD, Battlefield and SW Battlefront series the multiplayer is a joke. And there's nothing special about the story at all IMO.

No. Gears 1 is my favorite game of all time. Gears 2 is great also but the smaller skill gap makes me angry.

The chainsaw in Gears is overrated. The samurai sword in Saints Row is more fun to use.

Gears is probably my second favourite console shooter, behind Halo. I prefered Gears 1, mainly because the multiplayer in 2 was glitchy & laggy while I owned it, but I loved Horde mode in 2. I want to buy it again, but there are a lot of other games I haven't played yet still to buy.

One of the reasons why it's so overrated, I imagine. The single player in the first game nearly put me to sleep. I really can't see why people like these games so much. The first Army of Two honestly offered a funner and more unique campaign, and that scored a much lower 6.5. I will never get what goes through some peoples' heads...

Prove me wrong then. You did the same exact crap throughout the whole campaign of Gears. Run into enemies, take cover, shoot enemies, proceed, run into more enemies, take cover, shoot, kill, proceed, rince/repeat. Ao2 actually had the whole team play thing going on to break up the monotiny.Sure, there was the small vehicle section in Gears, but nobody even seemed to like that part. Ao2 actually did alot of different things throughout the whole campaign, and there is no arguing that it's coop completely destroys Gears' coop.

Agreed. And I'll add the co op in Gears felt more like a chore at times than actual fun. I played it with my bro and he hated it. Nightfall in Gears 1 on co op is about the least ammount of fun I've ever had in a game.

And that is total bull, as I absolutely LOVE Left 4 Dead and Halo 3. But those are actually great games. Gears is not.

You could dumb down anygame down to like that. Lets use God of War as a example. kill enemies, move on, kill more enemies, move on, kill more enemies, move on.... Gears of War is a fun game but the online is atrocious.

I can't prove your opinion wrong, how the hell would that work? What i can say is that it was nowhere near as fun killing people in Army of Two compared Gears and it didn't control as well.

No, you can't use that argument for God of War, because again, it did alot of things differently. It broke up the killing with interesting puzzels, platforming, and awesome boss fights that all felt unique. Gears literally did nothing to change up from the endless killing.

I actually thought the campaign in Gears 2 was alot better than Gears 1. It actually changed things up a bit with the chases and huge boss fights. The level design was also way more interesting than the boring corridor shooting crap in gears 1.

Way to completely ignore the puzzels and platforming. Those things are just as big a part of GoW as the combat. Have you even played them?

Yea, Gears of War 1 and 2 both sucked pretty hard. I couldn't even convince my little brother to play the coop with me past the few first missions. Gears of Snore is what it should have been called. The problem with it is that all the battles are pretty much the same. It's one of the few games were the repetitivity truly kills it for me.

Ok we'll put it so you can understand it as your having trouble. Which Genre does God of War come under?! Hack N Slash so thats basically all it is. Gears of War is merely a 3rd person shooter. Mario is nothing more than a platformer, Zelda is adventure game, Thats all they are, having various elements from other genres doesnt matter as weve dumbed it down to a specific catergory. the END!!

There's driving segments, on rails segments, boss fights, the nightfall running from light to light to avoid Kryll in Gears 1, and there's a few quiet parts where no enemies pop out, just to build suspense :)

Yes.

However it an great, dumb shooter, one of the most notable and influential this generation.

Which is odd.

As I have two Locust figurines sitting on my desk next to me.

Gears is all about the cover shooting, and putting variations on it. For what it does, its great. Saying that the weakest bits are everything that isn't that be it the horrible vehicle sections in the first and second, and the ho-hum rail bits. Gears is one of the last games when it comes to variety, may be a weakness in some respects but it for most of the part it really sticks to its design. Personally I think certain things could have been fleshed out much better, mainly the cooperative design systems and level design built around coop. Problem is you have to work around the singleplayer prospects and a.i. limitations when designing it.

A little. A fun game to play (ecpecially co-op), but I haven't tried multi-player, which is what would might have pevented it from feeling repetitive..

O yes the cover shooting is without a doubt the best part of the gameplay, but it's incorrect for someone to say that that's all the game is. And I quite liked the vehicle sections :)

Really?

Honestly that is what GeOW boils down to, cover shooting. Everything but the vehicle section is a variation of the same systems and design. Things like the Kryll at interesting variables to the mix, but well, thats it. And that really isn't a bad thing.

No more complex than a game like Doom I have to say, to me the vehicle sections felt like those obligatory vehicle sections that so many shooters have to break the pace and offer a little variety; locking the player into vehicle - which isn't necessary, if you keep your core design systems interesting (with examples like the Kryll) it should still remain compelling

/mini rant.

I wouldn't say overrated. I will say that I personally would not give either game a 9 or better. They are good games, but alot of issues for each game sticks out too much. That said when you have good pacing, great action, and pretty good graphics. oh and genuine good game design overall, it's pretty hard to call a series bad, and makes it easy for it to garner some high praise.

I like this bit of Destructoid's review of Gears of War 2:

The game doesn't try and wow you with "innovative" new ideas, nor does it try and redefine what an action game is. It's a big, dumb, gory shooting game. Scratch that. It's the best big, dumb, gory shooting game.

I could never think of Gears of War series as overrated.

Gears of War 1 definitely is not overrated. GeoW2 probably is, but not by much (IMO it's a 8.5 game).

I honestly dont care for the series. I gave it a shot twice with 1&2 and I dont care about the characters, story and world. Its all very boring to me. THe MP is fun,but I find uncharted 2 mp better.

I love the GeoW series, they remind me of old-school Contra games somehow. In fact GeoW is the only reason I keep my 360. Can't wait for the third game.

[QUOTE="AAllxxjjnn"]

[QUOTE="Master_ShakeXXX"]

Master_ShakeXXX

Army of Two better than Gears? I will never get what goes through some peoples' heads...

Seriously, Army of Two was kind of **** in nearly every category.

Ao2 actually did alot of different things throughout the whole campaign, and there is no arguing that it's coop completely destroys Gears' coop.

you do that in nearly every shooter, so tell me what's new?

it's the boss battles and the variety it gives you despite the severe linearity. something Halo can't do, while being much less.

linearity, that's where you could've started.
