So SW, what are your thoughts about the upcoming Valve game DotA 2? We haven't received any news regarding it but I think Valve will reveal some details on Gamescom. Thoughts and will you buy it? It'll be first day purchase for me ;)

Buying it day 1 because I like the genre and Valve. Not to mention the emphasis on making it an E-sport will put it right behind Starcraft II given how big DotA is in Asia.
We'll see.
I would like to as long as Valve goes all out with the online on it. I would love to see an online network with leaderboards, and a ranking system, and all that. Also if Valve would do constant updates every week or two to fix any balance issues that come up that'd be great.
I won't want to play it if they are releasing what they feel is a 100% complete game, and just say "Here you go. That's all you're going to get", but I doubt they'll do that since it's Valve we're talking about.
Pro Dota player here. Been playing since the 04 days. I am so hyped for Dota 2, its my number 1 most anticipated game (not counting SS) Can't wait to play it. So glad they will make it more accessible to new players as well.
Not really hyped for it, LoL does a good job of sating my Dota needs. Also its free. Led_poisonBut its not as good. ;)
Wow, I sure hope the friendly, helpful, and not at all angry at the world DotA community flocks over to this one in droves!
Never really liked DoTA in the time I played it. Melee heroes are underpowered, the item system is needlessly complicated, the net-code sucks, the community is the worst ever, denying towers or mobs detracts from the action.

Melee heroes are not underpowered.... LoL and HoN have worse balance than the current Dota scene.
Item system needs a minor re-work. Its fine for the most part
Net-code does suck, its based off of a 7 year old game
Community is horrible, but at higher level play, its not so bad. HoN is really not that different. LoL has by far the best community.
Denying is one of the most strategic aspects in dota.
I never really liked Dota 2, much prefer tower defense, but it is being made by Valve right? I've got pretty much every game made by them so I'll see if it's releases cheap on Steam

Personal preference I guess, but from all the guides I've read they've mentioned being a melee hero is a disadvantage. And from what I've played everyone just goes for the ranged characters.
As for the item system, it is probably one of the worst systems I've ever seen. Everything is disorganized with all the items being all over the place, upgrading items is probably one of the most tedious things to do due the disorganization in the item system.
As for denying, I guess it is another personal preference but I feel it slows the game down as by denying mobs to the enemy you do not focus on the enemy's mobs thus you too would be on a lower level. It also disadvantages melee heroes as they're the ones trying to attack the mobs being denied to them in close ranged.

I can understand the personal preference on the Item system, and like ive mentioned, it does need some work...But melee is not always at a disadvantage, on top of that, 3 of the strongest heroes in dota are all melee at the moment. Not to mention that melee deny, and kill creeps much faster than any range.
Denying is just too important. Range heroes will always have an advantage over melee early on *cough LoL* Denying allows the melee heroes to suppress range heroes levels and gold.

I once came into a DotA game as a complete noob, ready to learn more. Took about 2 minutes before I got trolled by angry 12 year olds. Some of the people there have serious personal issues...
Not really, i have seen some games and i think is way too complex and it didn't look that fun to me.
Unlikely.
I really liked DotA and League of Legends, but the only reason I even bothered with them was because they were free. They have fun gameplay, but I don't know what it is about those types of games, they just attract the WORST kind of people into their community. I don't know how it's even possible that games so focused on teamwork could attract so many people who will absolutely hate you for even the slightest thing, but they do, and it's just not worth dealing with, even for free.
Unlikely.

Yes :P
But like tagy said it's because they're free.
LoL might have the worst community of gamers I've ever seen in my life :P

I had the exact same experience. Even before the game started, in the lobby about 10 seconds after I join, some tool types "Svetzenlether's gonna suck". I then have to put up with some idiot b#tching about how I didn't start off the right way. The last straw was a TEAMMATE messaging me saying "please leave, you're bringing the entire team down, and if you don't leave then we will"
I hope Valve's got some HEAVY moderation planned for this.
