Apparently most of you have forgotten what GOTY really means.

I've seen too many Cows and Lemmings (mostly Lemmings) downplay the greatness that is the GOTY award. If a Sheep brings up that the Wii has a GOTY award, their argument is always "but what else does it have"? Firstly, I dont know how many times this must be answered, so here are some good games worthy of a purchase off the top of my head:

Super Mario Galaxy (obviously)
Super Paper Mario
Zack and Wiki
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
Trauma Center: New Blood
Medal of Honor: Heroes 2
Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition (by far the best version)
Warioware: Smooth Moves
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Now that the myth has been laid to rest, back to the matter at hand....

"GOTY" implies much more than what it has lately been given credit for. It implies that the game awarded it is, obviously, the best game released that year. Being that SMG is exclusive to Wii, the Wii possess' a game that provides the best gaming experience available on ANY console....that year (including PS3 and Xbox 360). It doesn't mean any one console is better than the other, which is why I dont get why Cows and Lemmings (again, mostly Lemmings) are so defensive about it.

Now, you may disagree with SMG getting the GOTY award, but thats where the term "opinion" comes in. YOU may not agree with it, but because we are on Gamespot, we go by Gamespot's decisions. Sheep cried when Zelda:TP was "robbed" of AAA status, but in the end, it is our opinions, and because we're on Gamespot, we've comes to terms that it cannot be considered AAA.

So in the end, all I am asking is that Cows and Lemmings give credit where it's due. It's probally too much to ask, considering we're in System Wars, but hopefully we can findout who the intelligent people on these boards are. ;)

SMG was definitely the most awesome title of last year and well worth the GOTY award it recieved. If anyone is down-playing (lemmings) GOTY because SMG recieved it then they are in huge damage control. SMG is the best mario since mario64.

Wii has proved it's not a gimmick console with only minigames but the 3rd party support does need improving and I'm sure it will improve ths year.

By acknowledging the fact that SMG is GOTY for 2007 here at GS is giving credit. Seeing as they are all opinions as you put it, that's all that's needed here. Actually, its Super Mario Galaxy. From many publications. It didn't get any GOTY Awards (talking about Crysis here).

I acknowledge that, but GameSpot's opinions on games means nothing to me since GameSpot has shown that it has no editorial credibility, and its good reviewers (whose opinions I might not have agreed with but at least respected) have all left this sinking ship.

I can respect those who say that SMG is the best game of the year when its backed up by their reasoning and logic. I don't give any weight at all to GameSpot's opinions anymore, and I don't see how anyone can.

Have you played SMG? Its pretty damn original. Moreso than Crysis. 10,000th Mario game>10 billionth FPS THIS YEAR ALONE.

SMG is the GOTY, this means that the Wii has the best game of 2007 and either you like it or not this is great publicity for the brand. Some of you say that you don't accept SMG as GOTY because gamespot lost its credibility but hey most of the gaming sites also gave that credit to SMG; what a irony that once that a PS3 or 360 gamewas poorly reviewed then you start complaining about GS, GS lost part of its credibility since the Twilight Princess review.

Also the huge credits that games like Medal of Honor Heroes 2 and Zack and Wiki received motivates 3rd parties to develop great games.

Personally my biggest issue is with ppl that say SMG sucks or isn't worth GOTY or downplay and say it's only an opinion. but then say how their console has more AAA or AA's than the wii. which is using the same reviewers opinions. :roll:

No, GameSpot had reviews I didn't agree with, sure, but it lost its credibility when Jeff left, because like him or not, you could clearly see that GameSpot valued money more than it did editorial integrity.

Like I said, I can respect people feeling SMG is the best game this year. I know its up there for me myself. I don't think it was the best game this year, but I see how some people would feel that way.

Its when you try and make others feel that way that I disagree with that. You can like something while respecting that others do not.

:o yes if you don't like shooters its a waste of your time just like if you've matured past age 7 you don't like mario any more. Lol, mario is ok seriously but its not origional at all. Infact, you can find a different way to wag your hands around but its still just mario according to your logic.

Crysis looks good, are you gonna fault it for that? Its a damned good game too, my GPU perishes under the might of the specs but even with low settings the game looks amazing. Anyway, the gameplay stands out too, above all shooters last year it is clear that Crytek had essentially unlimited resources and time to make the game, i've not seen a single player game so replayable either, and with mods (if thats your thang) you could have yet more fun.

Sure Galaxy has done something new, but it was expected really, we all know nintendo wanted to make a game like this and i give it kudos. Put it against a game like Crysis though it can only come down to personal taste, how many people outside of GS forums do you know that would rush out and buy the ultimate gaming rig and bury themselves in Crysis and other high spec shooters that woud also casually waltz into GAME or Zavvi or whatever and pick up a copy of SMG to play now and again on their wii. Crysis is GOTY, SMG is GOTY, Hour of Victory is GOTY but who cares because opinions are just like our rear end, we've all got 'em and they all stink.

Hold on, let me get this straight. Gamespot has awarded the 360 with more AAA-AA games then the PS3 and Wii, therefore it's the best console.

But gamespot giving mario galaxy the GOTY is just "their opinion" and doesn't mean much?

Believe me, i really dislike treating gamespots word as law(hence why i voted for anarchy); but as long as we say gamespots AAA-AA matters, their GOTY's matter too. In fact, going by AAA/AA games alone from anywhere is highly flawed. I also believe in factoring in the variety in games(uniquness) etc. It's one of the reasons why i believe the DS has a much better library then the PSP, although they are nearly matched in AAA and the psp surpasses it in AA.*

BTW, mario galaxy has recieved GOTY nods from more then just gamespot; IGN is one of note. Does it mean it's the best game ever? Not necissarily, but as long as noone else tries to tell us that the 360 > Wii/PS3 because it has more AAA/AA games on gamespot, gamerankings, or anywhere else, then we can all agree that SMG as GOTY is opinion. Either way, surely the fact that profesional reviewers opinions have weighed in and their decision is that SMG is worthy of an overall score that nearly matches OoT must count for at least something.

I guess I always just ignore fanboys when I discuss something (Push them out of my mind). So I make the mistake that everyone else will as well. I do like chatting with them though. Good laughs. You'll never get fanboys to accept anything that goes against their ignorant view. It seemed to me that the TC was asking everyone else (Non-fanboys) to give credit here it was already given. I should have clarified that I was meaning Cnet and GameSpot's senior management, not the editors themselves. They had some editors that I respected. Now the editors I had respect for have almost all left for one reason or another, and GameSpot as a site has many things that they need to do to get credibility back, if they ever do get it back.

Ok I respect your opinion, we are not trying to force you to accept that it is the GOTY, is just that many people dare to say the SMG is crap and a wii game can't be great because is "tah kiiddie". Also I can't rely on the opinions of people who hadn't played the game because then again are not familiar with the great success it is.

oh and BTW gamespot completely lost its credibility since the Kane and Lynch problem, but Jeff lost part of its credibility with a couple of crappy reviews.

If you are refering to me, I never said the 360 was the best console. I have said in the past that it has thus far been my favorite this generation, but that is due to the fact that I play it more than the Wii or the PS3 at the moment, and I don't use, nor do I care what GameSpot has for AA or AAA games.SpruceCaboose

It was more adressed to anyone who thought that way; though if you do not use gamespots AA and AAA, but how you feel about the qualities of the library, then i respect that! Everyone will prefer different games and consoles. I wonder just how accepting system wars is with that. Also alot of people tend to confuse their personal preference with quality. For instance, i believe the 360 has the better overall library but i prefer the wii.

I was pretty sure there was a few other people who were disregarding SMG's GOTY win. People who then "claim ownage" with 360's AAA/AA or the PC's AAA/AA count.

EDIT: to your next post about clarifying what you meant about CNET/gamespot: I see, fair enough! I agree, alot of interesting editors have left unfortunatly(i really liked Alex, though he seemed to get stuck with alot of really crappy games! so maybe leaving is a blessing for him :D). Not olny because many ppl dont like platforms or mario games but there were some TRULY nex-generation games with awesome Graphics-Gameplay that was truly a new experience for many of us. Such as games were COD4 (imo) Crysis and more.

5)SMG is the GOTY,it must be great no doubt but stills i wont pay 260euros + 50-60 for the game = 310 less or more for play 1 game and then searching what to play (especially truly nex-gen games like GTA4-DMC4-MGS4-FF13-GoW2-FABLE2 etc etc etc).Thats my opinion of course.

6)If someone isnt into nintendo icons (like zelda mario etc that are good games i suppose for any nintendo fan,and especially for the old nintendo fans that grew up playing NES-SNES) cant find a single reason to buy Wii (imo).The games youre mentioning are FAR behind than PC-360-PS3 can offer. Even when you claiming RE4 is best version on Wii is a game that most have played it years now... Many years.For the other games you mentioning nothing can go near 360-PC-PS3 best exclusive games.Nor graphics-sounds-gameplay and quality of titles are even.

When actually about 95% of wii games have crap graphics and crap game play(shovelware). Now, with that said i respect that the SMG is goty but overall that doesnt means that the wii had the best games overall in 2007. The 360 had so many AA-AAA titles last year i couldn't even buy all of them, so while SMG is Goty the 360 is console of the year.
