The idea of Apple and mobile devices killing handheld gaming originated from journalists who lacked stories to write about. There are so many people saying this now, because:
A. You are actually a parrot in disguise.
B. You want to see the world burn.

Hundreds of millions people have played pokemon throughout the years

AdrianWerner

I doubt that very much. And most of all, Angry Birds have been downloaded over billion times already. THe scale is completely different. Pokemon is a lot more profitable, but far more people have played Angry Birds than Pokemon

Really?? because the games alone on the handheld has sold over 200m so i'm right

Nope...show me any data..200 mln copies =/= 200 mln users, unless you're saying everyone only bought one pokemon game. In reality most people bought several copies. Of course, multiple persons could have played single copy also. The reason why I'm doubting your claim is because I haven't seen any real data that tried to estimate the number of people who played it. If you have it, share it :)

One way or another though, you were wrong claiming that more people played Pokemon than Angry Birds.

Everybody has a mobile device nowaday, Ipod Touch, Iphone, or Android devices. But what will kill dedicated handheld gaming like the 3DS, is not because people prefer to play games on their Ipod or Iphone, rather it is because people rarely gaming on these devices. All they do are, browing the internet, listening to music, facebooking, or texting. So if people's times are spent on non-gaming related activities, Nintendo or Sony lose potential customers. For example, ever since my nephew got his Ipod Touch two years ago, he rarely ever touch his DS. It is not because he plays games alot on his Ipod Touch that he felt he didn't need a 3DS or a Vita, but rather it is because he's time is spent doing all these non-gaming related activities on his Ipod Touch. Hell, even I did exactly like he did. I only play games on my Ipod touch for like five minutes, and then the rest of the hours are spent listening to music and browsing the internet or watching videos. If Nintendo or Sony fail to turn the table around, there won't be any dedicated handheld gaming consoles in the very near future. Discuss.

Totally agree with you for the most part.

who the hell would give a kid a 500$ phone?

dontshackzmii

you would be surprised as to how many kids have 500$ phones. Look at the prices of them without a contract vs having a contract.

I think Sony and Nintendo will just come out with gaming tablets. Touch screen is terrible, but with my asus transformer i can connect my ps3 controller and map the touch keys. Though it does take away the fact its supposed to be portable gaming device.

I think Nintendo will be in the game a little bit longer just because children don't have smart phones, however I think that the core is losing interest rapidly in handheld game systems. Unfortunately, that means that the 3DS is going to be getting more and more kiddy software as time goes on, and fewer and fewer games that appeal to adults.

The PSP sold well with adults because it came out before the Iphone and offered a complete multimedia package in the palm of your hand, and even the iPhone could not do games that were anywhere near as impressive as the PSP's at the time. However, phones keep getting more and more powerful, to the point that carrying around a device like the Vita seems pointless to most people. They'd rather play simple touch games like Angry Birds or Pocket God than have to lug around a big piece of hardware that won't even fit in their pockets.

It's a shame, because the Vita has incredible potential as a device, but the market just plain isn't there. Anyone who can afford one would probably rather buy an iPhone or a Droid, and with Power-A's Moga SDK and bluetooth controllers on the the way, the Vita won't even have the bragging rights of tactile controls to its name. Once that happens, iPhones and Droids will pretty much be full-fledged handheld game systems, and even now they have more or less displaced the handheld market for adults.

Even though I'm sure Nintendo will keep making handhelds for a while, handheld consoles are going to go back to being seen as toys for kids. If you're an adult with a smart phone, soon there will be little that a handheld can offer that your phone doesn't do better, and I can easily imagine Nintendo pandering further to the younger demographic to make sure they don't lose interest in portable gaming (not that they have much compition to worry about in that market, which is probably their biggest strength).

While I do agree that it's ridiculous how many kids nowadays play on iPods instead of dedicated handheld gaming, the 3DS and Vita aren't going anywhere.

But over the past few days, I've been finishing up the NOVA series on the iPhone and ignoring my other handhelds. NOVA series = Amazing FPS games, great campaigns. NOVA 2 has one of the most varied and fun FPS campaigns I've ever played.

Need to start 3 soon. :D

Blabadon
Must have extremely low standards if you consider the NOVA 2 an amazing fps.

More like "as long as their handhelds are affordable enough for kids, it will sell." Why do you think the 3DS was a sales disaster before the price drop? It's because adults weren't buying it. Adults are all too preoccupied with their iPhones and Droids to be bothered with a new handheld system, and the 3DS was too expensive for parents to buy for their kids. Dropping the price saved the system because the only market that handheld systems can effectively tap into (kids) can now afford it. The downside there is that the software selection is going to be reflecting that more and more as time goes on, although that is usually a given on Nintendo's systems anyway.

The poor Vita on the other hand is pretty much doomed, I'm afraid. Its best hope was to appeal to adults who wanted a more robust experience than phone gaming could offer, but it turns out that people don't care enough about having core games on the go to drop $300 on a new device that does a lot of the same things their phones already do. The Vita is not something you give a kid to play with on a long car ride, and thus it doesn't really have anyone it can sell to. Sony's best bet would have been to focus their energies on Playstation Certified phones and tablets, but we all know how that ended up.
