Too bad gaming is like its fifth function and it has no games

it has far more games then ds and psp put together. sadly like it or not apple is here to stay .
How is "one million away" "overtaking" Nintendo?

I have 15 pages of games on my iphone. All full versions. Almost all the "Best" games it has to offer. Other than plants v zombies and Dungeon Hunter i am so very very disapointed with the games.
Who would honestly consider somebody who owns solely an Ipod a gamer? bear in mind many of these "thousands of games" are crap like finger print scanners and mobile phone trackers (I have seen somebody on this very forum who thought this would be a legit app).

Even if so, not everyone buying an iphone will be gaming or buying games for that iphone. So the whole idea behind it is disingenuous to begin with.[QUOTE="Bigboi500"]

if you consider every damn crappy app a game, then sure, but for games with actual depth you need something else than an ipod
lol...iOs devices sold doesn't translate to market share directly:] You do realize typical user already upgraded at least once or twice? but as i mentioned in my post on page 1....couldnt the same be said for DS users? people going from DS to DSL to DSI and some even to DS-XL. the DS as a whole has sold 120 odd million or so but are there 120 million different DS customers? if comparing to apple should we be breaking down the DS into its different releases? even on the game front there are some games that need a DSi...they dont exist for lite users. just as those with older i___ devices cant play newer games on it.[QUOTE="dontshackzmii"]

It is not a fair comparison, since there is no way to tell how many of the Apple device owner purchased the item for games, rather than for the other more important fuctions, like phone calls, music, etc.

They separate those apps by labeling them "Entertainment" and not "Games".
As for the topic, it's very interesting that iOS devices have grown such an install base in a small time frame, but let's be fair. Not every one buying an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad is gaming on the devices. Everyone who buys a DS buys it for gaming. And while iOS gaming revenue has exploded in the past 2 years, it still has a long way to go to catch up to DS software revenue. And that's what Developers care about.

And DS still had far less device variations overall. Not to mention with iOS you're bassicaly bundle three devices together (iPhone, iPad and iPod touch) against one, so the pure numbers just don't give you a real answer.[QUOTE="dontshackzmii"]

It's similiar to PC, when compared to consoles they dwarf them in sales tenfold at least. While in reality even if you would consider pc gaming to be bigger, it's not as big as pure hardware sales would tell you.
Jobs says the company has sold more than 275 million iPods, with 120 million of those being iOS devices. Nintendo reports it has sold more than 132 million units of its Nintendo DS since launch with Sony claiming to have sold more than 60 million PSPs over its lifetime.

That's true, at least for most core gamer. But when you have over 30,000 games you can still have a nice library of quality titles in there. Including a growing number of DS and PSP games that have been ported over...

I doubt many DS users upgrade. I think Nintendo releases DS refreshes with the intent to get new people on board rather than get existing people to upgrade.
When Apple releases a new iPod Touch, it's a new system with an upgraded SoC and a couple new features. When Nintendo releases a DS refresh, it still uses mostly the same internals--maybe some extra RAM and slightly faster processor that only specific games can utilize--but it's just some feature additions like a camera or bigger screen. For a lot of DS owners, it's not a compelling upgrade.
And since when have the iPhone's been dedicated gaming devices? Even the PSP is a few steps closer to being a traditional handheld gaming device than the iPhone.

hmm....were kinda looking at two different things now. install base and game activity on the devices. another interesting figure would be the revenue being generated from games on the iOS devices. not all apps....just games. maybe compare that to the overall revenue generated from apps. that could be one indicator on how popular games are on the ios devices. as for the devices....because the devices are compatible (i.e they run the same apps...as far as i know anyway) it doesnt really matter how many were stacking of the variances in features. bringing the PC back into it....although it is certainly acknowledged that not every PC sold is for games we still stack the different GPUs and CPUs and such like up. to put it another way...the PC hardware works with windows and windows games will run on all this different hardware. im sure there is some sub section of section 6, chapter 4 of SW code that does put a limit on the hardware we count to be even considered as a potential gaming rig but thats still a vast array of hardware. i agree in that not every i__ device will be used for games (which is why the game revenue figure would be very interesting and num of games sold on i__ devices would be interesting). so we dont have an install base of 119million apple customers who want to play games. however the iphone, ipod touch and ipad should be considered variances of the same thing imho just as the DS, DSL, DSi and DSiXL and considered to be variances of the same platform. those are gaming platforms (or to be more accurate Ios is the platform and the devices that use it are just implementations). ...which after that rant probably means that from a games perspective the number of IOS devices out there is a pretty useless figure just like knowing the number of PC out there is a pretty useless figure. i suppose the point im trying to make is that iphone or ipad are not really the platforms....its Ios. just like Nvidia or ati are not the platform..its windows. which means when talking about hardware sales it is fair imho to stack all i__ devices (or at least i___devices that can play all games available on the app store...though that argument is on shaky ground) against the DS or PSP. but software sales and gaming activity on the i___ devices is a very different matter and the sales of the I___ devices is a useless figure in that discussion. ..sorry for the rant :).same, maybe all the other fanboys will unite against a common enemy? :PI hope this is not a trend to see

False:
Jobs: More than 120 Million iOS devices shipped.
Nintendo: More than 125 million DSes shipped.
Source.
Note that Apple's numbers include iOS devices that are not longer supported and cannot run the lattest games. Would be like Nintendo including GBA numbers... Anyway: DS alone > WHole iOS family.

you would be surprised. personally i went from a DS to a DSLite and when the DSi was coming out a load of people on the DS board were very excited and got one. thats not solid evidence i know but i reckon there are very very few DSfat users left for example. we live in a world where people with perfectly working PS3s, 360s and wiis swap them for PS3slims, 360 Ss and a black wiis. im not calling them stupid or anything..its their money to do with as they see fit, but thats the reality.[QUOTE="Cruse34"]

i don't consider apps and little flash games in the same league. only a few "games" on it would be counted. WaW zombies is a nice little example.I'll take a true gaming device over an overpriced piece of junk that's bad at doing what it was made for (music.) It's sound quality is so horrible even with a good set of quality earbuds.
Oh, and I like having buttons.
if were counting the ipod OS to only the nintendo ds, then why dont we count all of the gameboys? consoles? other handhelds then as well. Apple doesn't even come close. Apple loves putting a play on words to make themselves seem the best. Im sure over half of the ipods are very old and not even used.

For the love of god put spoiler tags around that
The iPod/iPhone are the same thing. They both play the same games.
The iPod/iPhone not only has a lot of the same games as the DS, but they cost 1/4th of the price as well to download. Assassins creed 1 and 2 scored higher on the iPod/iPhone than their DS counterparts due to better graphics and added extras, yet it only cost 5 dollars to download. GTA Chinatown wars also scored higher on the iPhone due to sharper graphics and faster loading times, yet only costs 9 dollars to download. Cooking Mama is the same game on the iPhone, yet also costs a fraction of its cartridge based DS counterpart.
Square Enix has an EXCLUSIVE final fantasy game on the iPhone called Chaos Rings, it looks better than Final Fantasy 8.
SEGA is releasing Sonic 4, WITH EXCLUSIVE iPhone/iPod levels and content. No other system is receiving exclusive levels and/or content.
Epic has revealed a new game called Project Sword, and ID is releasing Rage, both are games that exceed even the PSP graphics by a long shot.
The iPhone/iPod have built in accelerometers, gyroscopes, GPS, microphones, forward and rear facing cameras and a multi-touch screen to accomodate gaming features.
Nintendo at their E3 presentation in their own words have chosen to ignore Sony and Microsoft and are now focusing on competing with Apple. Those are their own words.
Apple snuck into the gaming industry through the backdoor, and the biggest videogame company in the world has recognized them as a bigger threat than Sony.
Irregardless of the iPhone being a phone, and the iPod being a music player, they have evolved into something that millions of gamers are now enjoying. They are do-it-all devices that also happen to have games that rival the DS and PSP, and in some cases, even outperform.
