Are you talking traditional fighters? Because, if not, Brawl comes out in 8 days (in NA).

I remember how popular fighting games were in the 90's. But first person shooters took over in popularity in the US. Devlopers dont want to take risks on making new fighting game IP's when they can just make an average FPS and have it sell. Plus its a lot harder to make a successfull fighting engine because it takes a ton of play-testing to balance. That why you mostly just see sequels to fighting games nowadays and not new IP's. Games like VF, Tekken, Soul Calibur, DOA etc. have had years to refine their engine.

You are asking this, and yet, it is the biggest year for fighters in an extremely long time. The most hyped Wii game is a fighter, for crying out loud.

He said "new or original." There is nothing new about Tekken, Soul Calibur, Street Fighter, or DBZ anymore. Those series have been done to death and should be replaced with a new series.

To be fair, a lot of the "amazing first person shooters" are all sequels, like Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, and soon to be Killzone 2 and Resistance 2. Sequels get the most attention because the series has proved to be good.

I wouldn't mind a new fighting series, though. Is Bleach a new fighting series at all.

I haven't gotten into a fighter since Mortal Kombat II. They just start to bore me, like racing games. Action games like DMC and the latest Naruto where you still have combos and fighting game elements but add so much more to gameplay are where it's at now. Like in racing games, it's fun to drive around in circles and all but sometimes I want to leave my car and do stuff (which series like GTA give you). Granted, I think I'll be buying Street Fighter IV regardless.

King of Fighters XII

"Screw SF (EX) 4!", "This is what Street Fighter IV should've been like!", "That looks amazing!". The quotes from the last sentence are what people are going on about from seeing the King of Fighters trailer that was put up last night. As you can see from the low quality screens it looks amazing. Add this to a revamped fighting engine and you got potential for one killer game.

Street Fighter IV

Whether you like it or not the game uses 3D models so deal with it. That said this game IS Street Fighter after all and as you know the heads at Capcom do know how to make a fighting game. Bringing back all the original 8 World Warriors along with going for a cartoony look instead of the realistic look done by 99% of the other games in the market it definately doesn't follow the stray of the average fighter.

BlazBlue

Stated to be the successor of the Guilty Gear series, Blazeblue is yet another high resolution 2D sprite based fighter by Arc System Works. Words can't express how hyped I am for this game.

Tekken 6

Currently the biggest game in the fighting game scene, Tekken 6 is the next installment to the 3D fighting series. What more can I say it's Tekken.

Sengoku Basara X

What do you get when you get the Devil King's Franchise entering the fighting game genre with Arc System works at the helm? You get Sengoku Basara X, Capcom's IP, Arc System Works gameplay, what more could you want?

Soul Calibur 4

Soul Calibur 4, is it known for it's big boobs or it's big guest apperances? Either way it looks like a solid addition to the weapon based 3D fighting franchise.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

This game needs no explanation.

King of Fighters '98 Ultimate Match

What's labelled as the best in the series is getting a direct revision for it. Think of this as King of Fighters '98 II.

Melty Blood Actress Again

Melty Blood is an indie developers dream. A doujin game that was created for PC's in the boarderline of early to mid millenium and became so popular that it has cemented itself as one of the premire 2D fighting games in the country of Japan. This game is the newest installment.

Arcana Heart

An anime esque 2D fighting game where all the characters you fight as are girls that range from the age of (from the looks of it) 10-15? What kind of publisher would be crazy enough to bring this to North America? Atlus that's who, this game has gained a cult following in the fighting community, and with Atlus fixing the bugs in the Japanese version and only being $30 there is no reason to pass this up.

Arcana Heart 2

The sequel to Arcana Heart is getting an '08 release in Japanese arcades. You just may spot and imported board around if you live by an Otaku Arcade (all 1-3 of them in the U.S.) or can just import a board.

Virtua Fighter 5 Version D

An update to this already great fighting game is coming out for arcades this year.

Samurai Spirits Sen

The series is making it's jump into 3D.

Akatsuki Blitzkampf AC

This popular doujin series is following in the steps of Melty Blood, a doujin PC game heading to the arcades. Wouldn't be surprising if we get PC and PS2 ports down the line. What makes the game unique though is it's simplcity, you press and hold buttons in certain combonations to do combos instead of moving the stick and pressing buttons.

Battle Fantasia

Remember Battle Fantasia? It was the game that Arc System Works made early last year that was in 2.5D and didn't do so hot in Japan. Nevertheless it's getting a PS3 and Xbox 360 port this year.

Punish the non-believers :P

They weren't the main focus in the series (hence not having a numeric number at the end). It's similar to how Maximum Impact isn't part of the main King of Fighters but XII is. But from what I've heard SNK is dropping the 2D sprites all together and going full 3D with this one and making it part of the main branch of games.

Not a lot of originality to be found for most of the "new" IPs coming out this gen, they share very similar mechanics as established franchises of it's genre. Just because there isn't a complete rewrite of the series , doesn't mean something can't be or isn't added.

Those games you mentioned usually add something new to each successive title, be it a new character, game mode or mechanics like parrying, just defense or the 'rage meter.'

There's a ton of upcoming fighters, but I don't seem any of them really offering much more than a new coat of paint to the series. I've noticed a few series have noted a few cool new features (like tekken 6's rage feature), but nothing really seems like it's going to a "revolutionary" feature for fighting games.

Basically if you like the lot of fighting games that are currently out you're in luck cause they are basically updating those, but if not the future doesn't look too bright for any major changes... Well any changes that we've herd of. THQ had a great trailer for a new UFC game, but could easily be dissapointing, and they haven't announced who's developing the title (I'm assuming Yuke's), and there's also rumors stirring of EA getting into the Mix-Martial arts game which sadly might end up being the most innovative fighter just because it's new.

I know what you're saying, it just wasn't said in the first place. I don't know much about Samurai Shodown because I don't really like the series. Though, I still play Haohmaru in CVS2. Which is somewhat unrelated to what I was saying, but whatever...

I wanted to know what makes it not main. Are they going 2.5D like Capcom ? Because if that's the case, then you could be right. Since at least the 3D Samurai Shodown games took advantage of 3D.

For me, that was the last great game in the MK franchise, my favorite version being MK3: Trilogy. The 3D versions are okay, but after Deadly Alliance the variation in fighting '$ty1es' overlapped quite a bit.

Virtua Fighter 5 Version D

An update to this already great fighting game is coming out for arcades this year.

Blackbond

I believe its called Virtua Fighter 5: R. Taka Arashi from VF3 will finally make a comeback. There is also a new character added named Karateka. I really like his character design. And there will be some brand-new stages added as well. I got this info at www.fightersgeneration.com . Its a good sight to go to for fighting game fans as it covers nearly all of the popular fighters.

I assume this game will eventually come out for PS3/360. It would be nice if it was a budget title right off the bat like VF4:Evolution was for PS2.

Have you not been keeping up on gaming news like the rest of us or something? Go look at all the fighting games coming this year. I can't wait to get Tekken 6, Soul Calibur 4, and Street Fighter 4.
