@omnichris: That video makes a very important point: They did change the gameplay in Crash 1 and 2. I had no problem 100%ing all 3 Crash games a year ago. When playing Crash 1 in the Remake this year I spent docents of lives on the second bridge level. I'm just not used to those controls in this game and it screws me totally up. I can still get through the game easely on the PS1, but I had a hard time on the Remake. Crash 2 works better. It's still somewhat different I feel, but it was good enough to 100% it.
This has nothing to do with people being worse gamers, this has all to do with screwed controls. Also: What's wrong with games being more accessible?
Back in the day most games were 25 minutes long with artificial difficulty to chomp coins. Generally, it served the Publishers to put up brick walls. In cases like Golden Axe it was impossible to fit the arcade content on a cartridge, which amounts to a barely 15 minute game when not taking into account difficulty.
Have gamers of this age been fed easier games? Certainly. But it doesn't really quantify as a definitive good as bad. Games like Darksouls are good for a sum of it's parts, it's just become synonymous with difficulty. Halflife 2 is incredibly easy but practically everyone in existence agrees it's the best game of all time.
@iandizion713: 80 metascore, 9.0 user score. I think greatness did arrive.
The main concern has been that the ocntrols have not been updated the way they should have been and even back in the late 90s, they were problematic, although all 3D platformers at the time had a slippery feel. It's something that should have been better managed for a modern audience. Thats why I can understand why new gamers would find it difficult. I personally think I'd be fine with it and I'll get the game with a price drop.
And all of this better lead towards a brand new release!
I'm past the 3rd boss on Crash 1, and there is definitely some bullshit difficulty here. The jumps just do not make sense half the time. So while i wouldnt say its dark souls hard, its definitely difficult.
I don't think I've seen anyone refer to the Crash trilogy as the "dark souls of video games"

gamesradar: But then there's the death. There's just no escaping it, there might be brand new death animations to keep you entertained - oh look I've been swallowed by a lion again - but there's no avoiding that the controls just mean that Crash Bandicoot has become Dark Souls.

There's also a few hundred people in the Crash subreddit crying about the difficulty being too high.
