My friend and I call it "Next Gen-itis"

It seems to me that with the higher standard of expectation for graphics, games have become quite a bit shorter when compared to last gen.

I think games hit their peak length for RPGs back in the PS1 era, when you had giants like Xenogears and Final FantasyVII taking long hours to complete all the content. FFVIII and FFIX got a little shorter, and FFX seemed to fly by.

As for action games though, last gen was its peak.

Resident Evil 4 was about double the length of RE5 - or at least it felt like it. It's for this reason that I think RE4 was the better game - it simply had more in it - and RE5's only saving grace in comparison was the amazing co-op element (And the graphics, of course.)

Metal Gear Solid 4 is another big title that felt significantly shorter. If you sat and watched all the cutscenes, it took about as long to beat as MGS3. However if you count only the game sections, MGS3, and even MGS2 to some degree were significanly longer depending on how good you are at racing through it all. (MGS4 had that artificially lengthened 3rd chapter that kind of throws the numbers off, but you know what I mean.)

Even new IPs seem to have less - what's there is great, and probably better than anything we played last gen - but it's still less (Looking at the 6 hours it took to beat Gears of War, for instance.)

HOw do you feel about this? Do you think games have gotten shorter? Why do you think this is?

Is this a bad thing?

He's saying this has been happening since then, Maybe your getting better or older. I Fail to see how despite we think that these titles give us so little We actually go into a game with the motivation of beating it. I know I used to play gensis and PS1 titles and would take weeks to beat them. But here I am actually beating games. Within 10 hours

To me, at least with what I've done with my game times, even older games from last gen aren't really that long, clocking in mostly under the 8 hour mark. I believe that it comes down to two factors: Our personal experience levels with a game and how the developer develops the game. From my game design class, I've learned that there's a very, VERY big transition from plans on paper to actual execution. What might seem like 12-15 hours in theory in writing might only take 4-5 hours when you actually play the game.

Talk about games getting shorter has been going on since the SNES era for me. That was a matter of perspective as you are pointing out - I think it does have something to do with whipping through games to get to the next one. However, I think that games are genuinely shorter - I mean you can't argue that RE5 is much shorter than RE4 was.

Sounds like the game planners need some more experience then if they want to make a more lengthy title.

Well... RE4 is a good example of that. The thing is, the standard for non-rpgs has become 5-10 hours rather than 10-15.

Yep. Ever since this gen started games have become a lot shorter. The average game now will run you around10 hours or so. Its pretty sad actually, considering not everyone has a lot of money to spend on games frequently and many want a game that'll last em a while.

I think short games is a matter of perception. How much free time do you have for gaming? I only play on the weekends. So one or two games, such as GTA IV & Fallout 3, will last me for several months. I can buy new Xbox games, but they'll be put on the shelf for later as there won't be enough time to play them. Plus there are tons of games. If the game takes too long to finish, then you won't be able to play the other games.

So you want a game that is not too long & not too short, so you can balance out all the other games that are out there & also weigh in the amount of free time you have to play them. Not all of us have 4-5 days of free time in a row to play a game. If I had that, then I'd be knocking those games out left & right & would start to think the games were short. They aren't really.

yes, games are becoming shorter as games come out. i think the longest games out right now are RPG's and some racing games (forza 2 and grand torismo) those are the only longest genras that are long. i kind of wish that games were longer.

The majority of NES games can be beaten in one sitting - the ones that couldn't be were notable exceptions, not the rule. Games have gotten longer. Last generation had plenty of short games, this generation has a few as well, so what? If length is your only concern - live in JRPG / RPG land - play games like Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Star Ocean, Fallout 3, and Oblivion. They're obviously going to be far longer than an FPS or action title. - Alternatively, get compilations like Orange Box or Dark Athena - more games equals more hours. - Though honestly, I've gotten more play time from stuff like multiplayer Halo 3, Battlefield 2142, and Dawn of War, than I've ever gotten from any single player game.

This is actually something I have been thinking about a lot lately.

The stand-out example in my mind is Elder Scrolls: Morrowind compared to Oblivion. Morrowind was huge, with tons of quests, and was a lot more indepth than any of Oblivions stuff. Oblivion could have expanded on that tenfold and instead tried to push every extra pixel they possibly could. Gameplay > Graphics. The 360 and PS3 could do some massive projects if they focused more on depth than AMG TEXTURES!

Not only games, but everything including music, movies, and books are getting shorter. All these things are also getting crappier. So basically things are becoming worse in general.

I dont know. Cuz i remember that when i was a kid i played Spyro 3 and Jak and Daxter for like 500 hours. but then again, it may have been because i was younger and not quite as smart in figuring out how to beat a game. For example, Super Metroid took me about 240 hours all together, but Uncharted: Drake's Fortune took me nearly 3 hours (my favorite game this gen so far). Now i do realize that uncharted is the shorter game, but not 237 hours shorter lol

Backtracking and collecting stuff tend to pad out a game. Super Metroid can be beat in several hours and Jak and Daxter is pretty short also. I believe it took me about 12 hours to beat Uncharted, which was long enough.

Well, I was about 7-8 when i played Super Metroid (damn crocomire), and about 11-12 with jak and Daxter, and about 16-17(still play it) with Uncharted, so im a little more experienced with gaming nowadays

There is a misconception about all of those games, whic h is why I listed them.. The main quests ARE very short. But you should to explore the world. In all of those games, even Mass Effect to a certain extent, there is such an abundance to do and such a rich history, that if you aren't exploring, you are shortchanging yourself and shouldn't have wasted your time playing it. RPGs aren't about the main quest alone, they are usually about how the main quest is having an effect on the world you are exploring.

Yeah so? He said RPGs are shorter too. And action games have always been kind of short. As for RE 4, I felt that it went on for too long anyway. I love that RE 5 was as short as it is. I think it has pretty good replay value. I'm still playing it coop to get all of the weapons.

You stole my thunder but I forgive you. Like he just said, not all of us have all day and night to game. With that said I rather welcome some of the "Shorter" games. It's just their price that I don't welcome. My free time is pretty limited so a 50-60 hour game is pretty much out of the question for me nowadays unless the game is EXCEPTIONAL. 10-20 would be a welcome benchmark though.

personally i think it has to do with the type of gamer you are i mean if you just want to beat a game you will rush through it not paying any attention to details and side quests but if your a gamer that strives to find everything and learn everything the amount of time in a game will double maybe triple in some cases plus i agree with whoever said that most people dont have time to play all day and night but i personnally think that it depends on the developer if they want to put a series together or if they want to just shove it into one giant game

It is a bad thing when prices are going up. Nobodys really done a game without having this gen graphics. So I think it's safe to say that the graphics are the culprits of making short games.

I don't think there's a drastic difference, but online has shifted the focus a bit and higher production values don't necessarily help either, for e.g. it's easier/cheaper to create long branching dialogue in a RPG when you don't need voice acting for everything, but nodaways full voice acting is pretty much expected.

Games have always been long or short, you just havnt played them lol

Admitedly Jade empire & Fable 1-2 were 3 of the shortest games ive ever played in my life !!, oh ninety nine nights was also short as hell.

When it comes to games like Fallout 3, the main quest may be short, but the entire game take LONG as hell to finish, its a tad overwhelming but in a good way, i never got how some people would put fallout 3 in the "short" category as if the side quests arent part of the game, a RPG like fable should have been longer, since its not open world and quest are limited. Mass effect is pretty short too, not as short as fable, but the main quest is pretty short, and going to planets in the mako gets repetitive after awhile

It depends on the type of gamer you are. Some will rush through a game and plow through every objective in about 5 hours. Then there's the "completists" who want to complete everything. I'd say I'm in the middle. While I don't wanna worry about achieving everything more than playing through the story, I do want to explore the extra stuff a bit. But it also depends on the game. A game like R2 could easily last you more than 50 hours, maybe even longer. If you're going to complete the campaign on superhuman(you'll have to do it on Difficult first), then complete every co-op mission and rank up each class, and rank up in Competitive. Let's not forget trophies in competitive as well(you'll get the trophies in co-op as you go), like the 10K trophy! A game like this will take 50 hours to complete. A game like R&CF: ToD may take about 12 hours to complete everything in one go, but then there's Challenge mode. More upgrades to your weapons and nanotech! Also, getting the skill points is going to take some time... I'd say the game is at most 30 hours, for me, at least. KZ2 is an example of a shorter game. The campaign may be about 15 hours, depending on the difficulty level(I'm playing on Veteran, and my play time has clocked in at 10 hours), and if you're trying to find the intel and Helghast symbols, you may easily add another 5-10 hours, plus completing it on Elite AND the trophies. Then there's multiplayer. This mode is about 20 hours long for just ranking up, but then there's accomplishing every medal and ribbon, and GG is adding replay value to the games. Overall, this mode would be 30 hours, but because you can choose to play as a different class each day, it may be quite long. So in story content, yes, the games have been getting shorter, but in abundance of content, it has been getting greater.

Developers are all too busy playing online multiplayer to care about the singleplayer.

I was going to say this. On the overall scheme of things games on the whole are really about the same. I mean, I could beat Super Mario Bros. in a matter of minutes using the warps. But do something similiar in Oblivion or whatever and it's OMG TEH SUX.

What happened with Fable & Jade empire ? those were rpgs, and short as hell. the guy asked were games getting shorter RPG's count as games too last i checked, and its taking me far longer to complete everything in fallout than any of the Final fantasies the TC mentioned.

And yet doing all the quests, including side ones did take hours, though not as long as Fallout 3.

Really ?, Fable 2's sidequest took minutes to complete probably about 30 minutes. for them all, The sidequest were short and limited, the main quest was short, it wasnt open world, which was bad when i completed it i asked myself was that it ?, Jade empire was just short, everything, there were only three short locations and it was over lol.

I like to think of the fable series as a wannabe Oblivion, it tries to be this great rpg, and the creator promises so much, and then its just crap.

Now i do realize that uncharted is the shorter game, but not 237 hours shorter loltmacscores91
There's no way you beat drakes fortune on the first play through in 3 hours.

[QUOTE="subrosian"]The majority of NES games can be beaten in one sitting - the ones that couldn't be were notable exceptions, not the rule.

Yeah, they were shorter but at least they had certain level of difficulty to make up for it. Aside from a few shooters, most games are a cake-walk these days. Difficult games used to extend their length considerably.
