Well.. I don't know.

But, here are my arguments for console RPGs vs PC MMORPGs:

(EDIT: OK forget PC connection with MMORPG because consoles also have MMORPGs for eg. HUXLEY

The argument is more WoW vs other RPGs)

I have never played WoW but, have played Runescape.
What I can tell is that it really sucked me, 1 or 2 weeks passed, and I even lost some sense of time.
After some time I stopped for 1 week and I no longer think about that game.

What I think is that playing such never ending RPGS may be unhealthy. We seem to forget about the real
RPG game that is our life. I don't know but, you, WoW gamers, please tell if that game triesto kill your motivation
to do something in life?

What may happen is that players level up after spending countless hours and get the false
satisfaction
of doing something great. This satisfaction kills the need to do something in real life.
Leveling up in the real game that is called life may be more entertaining and healthy.:)

If this is the case then I would like to prefer console RPGS that are 40 hours or so long over PC games
like MMORPGs.

As I said I dont know but, somebody who plays these games may be able to tell something.

No, if your dumb enough to play WoW 12 hours a day than whatever happens to you is your fault. If you have control you can have a good time online and maintain a real life

If they're free and played in moderation no. I bought 3 copies of Diablo2 / LOD over time respectively, and played that game for a good 6 years, with little attention given to my consoles besides the 20-40 hour long titles that released every now and then, which I suppose that made me a casual console gamer and a hardcore PC gamer, or Diablo gamer, or something.

Regardless, even though I started magic finding and leveling in Diablo when on the Job, I never got caught, so that means perhaps I didn't do it in moderation and perhaps it was an unhealthy habit that I kicked some months ago.

Ok yeah, addictive open ended games are legal crack.

I don't like how you classified them as console and PC respectively. There are MMOs on consoles and shorter rpgs on PCs.

What level are you in real life? I'm 129AfterShafter

I don't have an overall level, I have levels in individual skills. Most of them are low, because my procrastination skill is maxed. It's mutually exclusive with nearly all skills, except for Video Games and Internet, which all give each other bonus modifiers.

And to answer the original question? I know some dudes who didn't turn up to their final for Databases (worth 50% of the subject), because of a 'Molten Core raid'. Somehow that doesn't strike me as positive behaviour.

Realistically, all these games and their "unhealthiness" come down to 1 thing: If you have an addictive personality. If you play WoW and become hopelessly addicted to the point that you are missing social functions or responsibilities (Job, Friends, ets..) then yes, it is very unhealthy. People begin to assume that they are actually doing something as opposed to playing a game and getting better armor/weapons/abilities.

I once heard a really good speach about this, I'm gonna try and find the transcript online and post it for ya. It's a really good read.

They sure can be very unhealthy.
Though it has to make You wonder.
If people are willing to give up life for a game, then what does that say about life?

I played wow... ALL my friends played it so i started. ALL my friends became more "sick" being less at school. And I played the game to much too. And when they were at school, all they did was talking about WoW. I quitted, because it wasn't that great. I prefer a good Zelda (:D) And they still play it. Now I have started "grade school" (I have a different system than you North americans, so I'll use that) and it's affected their grades. Going to bed at 2pm can't be good the day before mock exam.

There is no problem with games like WoW. However, there is a huge problem with people who play games like WoW too much, because they have a poor grasp on reality.

Any game can be unhealthy if it takes over a persons life. It just seems to be getting more attention and publication with WoW.

Though I do think that MMOs may have a bit more of a chance to suck people in than some other games.

I know that its not a problem with everyone, and that its only a few that really have a problem with playing games like WoW too much; but I think if they were designed to be played more in moderation, it would be better.

I've been trying to get my brother to take a break from WoW and play Bioshock on his PC.

Its been tough, he just can't stop playing! lol.

But nah its not unhealthy. I remember in highschool I was on the net and would chat for hours and hours. I grew out of it and went on with my life. Now I'm prob online alot less and its no biggie. I know its not the same as playing a game but its just the idea that you get caught up when you enjoy something alot and you may tend to over do it a tad bit.

Its healthier than other video games, believe it or not. The only reason I played WoW for more than a year was because of all the great people I met, getting on Vent every day was always a good time, the game itself, was kinda meh, I just got on to raid with all my friends. The only reason people say its unhealthy is because people get "addicted" to it, but its really just because you become friends with so many people.

Don't be a jackass... you just have to control yourself. If you don't let yourself get addicted to it, it's very easy to play casually, just like you would any console game.

If you can't control yourself with videogames, don't play MMORPGs.

You're telling people to go outside, while you're on your computer on a video game forum bashing people for playing a certain genre or a game in that genre. Wow, you're so cool.

WoW and other MMORPG's really is not good for you. I played DAoC forever and it almost cost me a good job. Those games can take over your life if you don't pay attention to how much you play.

People here need to realize that they are weak or have problems if they think they can't control themselves when it comes to a game.

Most WoW players are casuals, and have lives.

Not saying that serious WoWers can't have lives either, since I know many that do.

i gotta disagree with you here. i have some friends who play wow (i dont play it myself) and they have normal social lives. not everyone that plays wow sits in front of their computer moniter 10 hours a day like stereotypes lead you to believe.

I know what hes on about, but hes basically giving me his life story .... .... I change the subject ... BOOM 2 mins later ... "Oh yea we did a great raid last night" .... -.-....

Anyone who has a level 60+ is not a casual and there are a bunch of people with level 60's. I would consider my sister-in-laws casuals and their characters are level 30 or so. It simply takes WAY to long to level up for a casual to make 60.

Online FPS games like ut2004 can be addictive too, trust me I know. A hot girl could walk up to me and say "Hey you wanna go on a date with me?" and I would be like "Nah, I gotta get my rank up in BF2 first".

They had some kind of documentary on DISCOVERY HD about this topic. They had some expert on there and I agree with them because I know exactly what Meu2k7 is talking about and I've experienced people with this addiction. These games like Diablo and WoW are designed to hone right in on the reward areas of your brain and keep them stimulated incessantly. I guess everybody gets off on something but there are multiple people who have died or driven themselves into debt because of this particuliar style of game.

These fetch quest level up things should be BANNED and their creators IMPRISONED just like the dealers of illicithabit forming drugs! Play HALO!!

I played wow till level 80 and dropped it, to see end game dungeons and fight cool bosses and get cool weapons...you basically have to throw your life away for it so meh. Sometimes i'd connect in the morning and see a guy killing some elves, then i'd disconnect and connect at night and see the same guy doing the same thing. I asked him, why are you always here and what for? he said something about farming items to get a weapon, only have like 60 hours more to do so wish me luck O_o it was then and right there that i quit Wow.

I found WoW to be very unhealthy, I was in a guild where they would try to force me into raiding with them on Friday and Saturday evenings instead of going out with my mates and enjoying myself, ofcourse they didn't like it when I said I'm off down the puband I was out on my ear. Seems that they wanted me to be as sad and unsociable as they are.

I've also noticed how the hardcore players think that having full epic gear is a sign of "teh godliness" when it's more a sign of them having no real life friends and/or a job. The way WoW is, in order to get to that level you've either got to find a decent flexible guild (very difficult to find) or devote your life to the game.

WOW isSh!t and a life ruiner, from the people I've seen play it, that's all they do.

I laughed at my cousin when he told me he played it, it's for anti-socials who don't have a real life outside their WoW character

DON't PLAY WoW!! Go outside and skate or something

You have no idea what you're talking about. If people can't control themselves for how long they play, and when, they shouldn't be playing the game. I have two level 70s, and I definitely am not an anti-social. WoW isn't the sinkhole that everyone thinks. It's just those people that play it is all they do. You know what they'd be doing if WoW didn't exist? They'd be playing some other MMO. WoW doesn't ruin your life, it's the idiots that can't control their playtime.
