How good will COD4, HALO3, WarHawk, Unreal Tournament or Rainbowsix Vegas be in 10 years?

With industry focusing to much on FPS and online play are games today loosing their timeless replay value they once had. People are still playing Contra but no one will be able to play these online based games once the online community dies. Even games not mulltiplayer based are effected with Download content such as Mass Effect or GTA.

I like to keep every game I buy but this generation I may trade in and sell more of my games because I dont see them being playable in 5 or 10 years..

Downloadable content, and HDD have ruined the ability to save our games for years an years

Do you think this generation's games are forced to be recycled in 10 years rather then be enjoyed like so many other vintage video games we still play?

That is a damn good question. I don't believe they will. A great game will always be "classic". We have our classics like Mario, Zelda, Metroid, but if you remember there were hundreds of games that came out along side of those that today we don't remeber. Classics have always been few and far between the stacks of average games.

Pretty much echoing off Wasdie (most of the time I do...) There will always be that "classic" game in each generation. Actually, this is the best time to make a classic game. If you look at history, most classics shine at the time people consider gaming or any art dead.

Only Call of Duty 4 will remain a classic.

It was better than Half Life 2 IMO.

It hasn't even been one year and people are acknowledging that Halo 3 has lost it's value.

I think all games that have a great single player campaign / storyline could be considered as timeless classics down the road. Bioshock, Eternal Darkness, Metal Gear Solid and Grand Theft Auto games could all be considered timeless classics in a decade or so.

Multiplayer based games like Halo and Gears will probably not be classic games because their servers will be shutdown eventually.

YEs because there are too many of them and too many are alike.

MGS 4 and GTA 4 will have very high value and will last long to most who play them. Quote me on it.

I suspect Crysis won't become classic, neither will Halo 3 or CoD4..

Perhaps something like say...BioShock or...well, I can't think of anything else. Maybe SoSE.

Yes. Most of the games released this gen are shooters and shooters age poorly compared to other genres. Its always been that way.

As of right now I think Portal is the only game this gen that will have that same "classic" status to which you are referring. There have been a lot of great games so far, but nothing that has left a lasting impression on melike Oni, Kingdom Under Fire, or Shadow of the Colossus did last gen. (I won't even touch any of the generations before that.) It's actually quite sad, but most games now-a-days are excellent, but entirely forgettable.

I dont agree with having Grand Theft Auto, it not that its not a great game, but being a timeless classic it aint. I agree with the following Bioshock, Eternal Darkness, Metal Gear Solid, all of those blown us away and still do, I don't see myself going back to the previous GTAs like I would the original MGS or Eternal Darkness, etc.

But CoD4 can be mentioned in the same sentence as Golden Eye? apart from this one of cause.

GTA's will be remembered for creating a genre. And because of what GTA has done for modern games you have to respect it and most people will go back and play it years from now. It's a great game you can pick up and play.

The Wii is not as effected by this as much as the ps3 or 360 due to its focus on the single player story... however the motion controlls could become very very dated and obsolete

I have high hopes for MGs4 but I have yet to play a truly classic game this generation

I know that, but not for being a timeless cl@ssc that you going to keep going back to after years, at least not me. I respect what it did with GTA3 and all, but nothing of the other.

I certainly don't think that COD4 and Halo 3 are classic, timeless games however, titles like Oblivion, Mass Effect and Bioshock would certainly be memorable gaming experiences that I might consider classics from this era.

The difference? COD4 and Halo 3's emphasis is on multiplayer and I find that to be timeless, you need to have a solid and memorable single player campaign. Both Halo 3 and COD4 failed at this. The COD4 single player campaign could be finished in 6 hours!?!?!? And the Halo 3 single player story was meh and the ending really, really tanked.

Well there are already some classics this decade, to name a few

  • Half-Life 2
  • Morrowind
  • Neverwinter Nights
  • Halo
  • Warhammer DOW
  • Coh
I should mention that some of those will undoubtably become classics. At least in my opinion, they will.

The way I see it. Games like GTA will always be remembered. That franchise brought many new things to the table that many developers try to mimic today. Then you got other games like zelda and metroid, and mario, etc. Mostly Nintendo. Do you know why? Because Nintendo is almost always attempting to bring something new to the table. They mix it up. Sure games like Bioshock were good in their own respect, but lets compare it to System Shock 2. I don't want to sound like I'm bashing the game, because I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's just that it was too simple. I expected much more, and recieved a lot less. The story was great, the game played very well, it just didn't come close to what I expected in terms of actual difficulty. I expected something to test my mind around every twist and turn the game brought, and it failed to do so. Games like Bioshock will be forgotten. What about Crysis? IMO I think Crysis will be remembered for a long time. The graphics engine used in the game will be looked at as a benchmark for games to try to achieve for a couple more years, and the game will be looked at as setting the bar very high in the graphics department for video games. Do you see what 'm saying?

Games that bring/offer something new to the table are the ones that become classics.

I doubt it, its too much of a letdown for many fans of the 1st two to be a classic. But other then that I agree and this list needs some BGII and DiabloII they are 7 years old and still frenquently talked about and played.

I completely think that games are losing 'timeless value'. A game seems to get bashed for not having online. It seems that developers are really focusing on multi-player, which in and of itself is not a bad thing, but single player games are the ones being re-played years and years down the road. Games with an astounding single player story and gameplay really are starting to become far and few between.

I agree, and no one will be playing MP in those games in 5-6 years, especially when a sequel comes out. So with an average single-player mode, how can it be considered a classic when no one will be playing it down the road? Oh yeah, it can't.

Games like Bioshock and Portal are already the stand-outs of this generation.

One big obstacle for the Wii to overcome is that a large chunk of it's most attractive games are continuations of a series. (i.e Mario, Zelda, Metriod so on so forth.) and while those games were fine and dandy in their own respect, each time you reiterate those characters and settings they lose a bit of their former charm. Mario Galaxy and Twilight Princess were marvelous games and I enjoyed them thoroughly thanks in part to the addition of new concepts and, heaven forgive me, gimmicks. But at the core they are still the same game I've seen a dozen times before that that denies them the ever elusive "classic" status.

But Nintendo was never one to curl up and die and is fighting back with some great new I.P's(most of which I havn't played yet) and hopefully when we all look back on this generation in X number of years one of those new games will have struck gold and be remembered in that way.

I only recently started playing Metal Gear Solid games recently (The last few months). I also played them in reverse order which I think was a good mistake to make. The afore-mentioned curse of sequels didn't really apply because I played 2 before 1 so instead of reiterating the events of 1 I was shown all these crazy events that i had no idea about, and when I played 1 later it was like an awesome history lesson. It's weird but in a good way. But I digress. I see MGS 1, 2, and 3 as "classics" and I have high hopes for 4 as well.
