I'm tired of Phil's crocodile tears, personally. Watching MS play victim to Sony despite buying a publisher and a bunch of studios and STILL not being able to release compelling products isn't Sony's fault in the least. Jim Ryan wishes he could get the same money Phil Spencer does to waste on Xbox, but, they do well with what they have.

Yeah they do, this is just pure damage control from their fans. If they didn’t care so much about console sales then why make a gimped version of an Xbox that is priced lower than the competition?

Microsoft is the type of company to just throw money at things for easy rewards. I do somewhat agree with Phil about branching out via PC and mobile, since a traditional console war isn't it. However, his lack of concern about the lack of quality games is very telling.

Microsoft just wants to buy their way into gaming. No hard work or anything.

More devices in my opinion. I stay in a 3rd world country (South Africa) where the cloud gaming isn't supported and the series S and even the Ps4 and Xbox 1 is still very popular. I know a lot of people who grabbed the series s + gamepass who rarely buy games full price instead of just playing gamepass games.

While I don’t work for MS, so I can’t say what was discussed while the xss was in production I can only go by how they marketed the xss, and from a consumer side of things, MS marketed the xss as “the cheapest option for the next generation“ type of approach, which in tells signals to me that they’re in a price point competition with their competitors.

Being limited to the console market makes absolutely no sense for Microsoft. Think about how much consoles can Nintendo, Sony or MS aspire to sell? 150 million at best?

Now look at Microsoft as a business. To remain hermetically limited to console gaming would be an absurd. MS has gain its place in the console market but to neglect PC gaming and the potential of the cloud would be to severely limit their growth potential.

To strategically limit yourself because you want to follow the rules dictated by your competitors, when you have the potential to be highly disruptive, was always one of the biggest failures from MS in the gaming space.

And Phil is absolutely right. There's absolutely no scenery when millions of people are going to abandon PS and join MS. Anyone, be it a lem or a cow, thinking otherwise is just delusional. Unless Sony makes some colossal mistake on the PS6 launch there isn't any way for MS to out console them. Best of chances would take them a couple of decades. And they might get there but they would still be wasting growth.

So I honestly don't get the reactions to this interview. Microsoft focus shouldn't be out consoling their direct competitors but to push the market to a place where they can grow beyond that. Which is what they're trying to do.

Businesses have to play to their strengths not to the competition's. Phil just stated the obvious, they won't win the console race but they're not (just) in that race.

Now, is he doing a good job executing that strategy? That's a whole different conversation.

I haven't bought an Xbox in two generations. Don't have anything against Xbox and actually think they innovate way more than Sony does. Phil's comments are whatever. Make good games and have consumer friendly services.... Life will he good.

Microsoft came to the conclusion that they can't beat Sony in the home console market when they introduced Xbox Play Anywhere way back in 2016.. this isn't news for anyone paying attention..

when you can't compete, you make a pivot.. that's just good business strategy..

for example, Nintendo realized they couldn't win in the traditional home console spec race, so they pivoted to a different strategy with the Wii and have since perfected it with the Switch; they're strengths being timeless IP and handhelds..

heck, Sony couldn't compete with Nintendo in the handheld market and exited that playing field entirely..

Currently, Microsoft's strategy is indeed working.. across Consoles, PC, and cloud, they've grown the Xbox brand to having the most monthly active users of the big three and the Xbox division is doing better than ever financially..

But ultimately, any strategy hinges on great 1st party games.. Xbox simply has to do better in that regard.. no more excuses and no more "just wait"..

Don't care about MS, their consoles, games and even less about Phil Spencer. But thinking that MS would sell more consoles than Nintendo or PS would be out of touch with reality. What he says sounds correct, so I'm not sure why anyone would be annoyed by it, unless he just made it harder for you trying to ignore reality. So I'm glad Phil Spencer isn't that stupid, I guess.
