Here's the thing, he's not lying by saying xbox will never "out console" Sony or Nintendo. Here's why:
MS is a software company, not a hardware company. They don't give a shit about hardware sales. What MS want is the software, that's why they try and buy up all the big software publishers. Their only goal is to make Gamepass an unbeatable deal on as many devices as possible.
That has literally been said and known by most here for at least 4-5 years but yet we get this disingenuous, intellectually dishonest false narrative blather of a thread all the time.
lol :P

I'm tired of Phil's crocodile tears, personally. Watching MS play victim to Sony despite buying a publisher and a bunch of studios and STILL not being able to release compelling products isn't Sony's fault in the least. Jim Ryan wishes he could get the same money Phil Spencer does to waste on Xbox, but, they do well with what they have.

Yeah they do, this is just pure damage control from their fans. If they didn’t care so much about console sales then why make a gimped version of an Xbox that is priced lower than the competition?
I'm a PC guy but after hearing what he said I think he should step down from being leader of Xbox his defeatist attitude and lack of hands on approach with their studios explains why Xbox is so consistent in mediocrity. He made good decisions with creating Gamepass, acquiring Zenimax, and making two tier Xbox consoles to appeal to different demographics budgets but his mistakes heavily out weigh it. Phil has shown himself to be an incompetent leader.
Arkane have made Xbox look like fools because they released Deathloop a timed exclusive for PS5 in great condition with high praise and then their first Xbox console exclusive Redfall is a dumpster fire that no amount of patching will fix. Arkane has shown that Xbox will let their developers get away with anything and Phil will lie straight to our faces that the upcoming game is going to be amazing when he knows its trash.
I think Xbox being backed by a trillion dollar company like Microsoft encourages this mediocrity because they're not dependent on it for their income like Sony and Nintendo are. The types of mistakes Microsoft made would be far more severe to Sony and Nintendo. I'd imagine if Xbox wasn't owned by Microsoft and was its own company or owned by a smaller one, they'd lose a lot of shares and investors because of what Phil said and the constant flops. Nobody wants to invest in a guy who is dead set on being last place especially when they got the resources to change it.
Microsoft is the type of company to just throw money at things for easy rewards. I do somewhat agree with Phil about branching out via PC and mobile, since a traditional console war isn't it. However, his lack of concern about the lack of quality games is very telling.
The Xbox-ABK deal will cause PlayStations forclosure if it goes through...Jim Ryan
Cows must be terrified... you're welcome at Xbox and windows pc 👍
This is sad.
The only response these guys can come back with is attempting to acquire ANOTHER publisher that has already been blocked.
They wont even speak on the other 23 studios MS owned since 2018 that haven't produced anything of quality so far. It shows that xbox fans know MS can't win without creating some type of anti-consumer monopoly.
Now that CMA blocked the deal, xboys don't even want to consider MS actually standing on their own feet and producing games from the studios they ALREADY own to compete with Sony and Nintendo the organic way.
Microsoft just wants to buy their way into gaming. No hard work or anything.
@nod_calypse: Xbox isn't a console, so what uncle Phil was saying was a slick way of saying, were still kicking ps5 ass heck yeah.
Xbox already win with biggest install base. Every iphone every smart tv every web browser is your Xbox when you are read for the best game deal of all history.

More devices in my opinion. I stay in a 3rd world country (South Africa) where the cloud gaming isn't supported and the series S and even the Ps4 and Xbox 1 is still very popular. I know a lot of people who grabbed the series s + gamepass who rarely buy games full price instead of just playing gamepass games.

While I don’t work for MS, so I can’t say what was discussed while the xss was in production I can only go by how they marketed the xss, and from a consumer side of things, MS marketed the xss as “the cheapest option for the next generation“ type of approach, which in tells signals to me that they’re in a price point competition with their competitors.
It is annoying, but only because it isn't true. They are playing the disheveled homeless outcast role to a T. They are just trying to look as though they are a minnow in a shark tank to get what they want.. which I don't really care since a lot of companies do that, but either way, give me a break.
Honestly it may come down to the success of Starfield before they decide their gaming plans for the future.
Not much different than the late Satoru Iwata saying "Nintendo can't compete", really. And he was right.
Not looking good for XBOX. XBOX fans are wanting someone who wants to win, instead of whining about being in 3rd place
@nod_calypse: No, I'm tires of seeing g comments like this on this site.
If MS has 150 million game pass subscribers, they win. That's it. Game over.
How many Xboxes they sell is irrelevant.
How many times does this have to be explained???
"We are not in the business of out-consoling Sony or out-consoling Nintendo. There isn't really a great solution or win for us. And I know that will upset a ton of people."
Repeating for the dense state of your mind: "There isn't really a great solution or win for us."
They can't win in the console space. There is no win. He's admitting it. Of course the focus is on GP now, because, again, they can't win. They're shifting the goalposts out of necessity. Let that sink in.
@nod_calypse: How you can manage to quote him, yet not comprehend what he is saying, boggles my mind.
Did I not JUST FRICKEN SAY "if they sell 150 million game pass subscriptions"? Yes, they are not trying to "out console Sony" because it's ALL ABOUT GAME PASS.
@nod_calypse: That's a very dumb way to look at it.
Being limited to the console market makes absolutely no sense for Microsoft. Think about how much consoles can Nintendo, Sony or MS aspire to sell? 150 million at best?
Now look at Microsoft as a business. To remain hermetically limited to console gaming would be an absurd. MS has gain its place in the console market but to neglect PC gaming and the potential of the cloud would be to severely limit their growth potential.
To strategically limit yourself because you want to follow the rules dictated by your competitors, when you have the potential to be highly disruptive, was always one of the biggest failures from MS in the gaming space.
And Phil is absolutely right. There's absolutely no scenery when millions of people are going to abandon PS and join MS. Anyone, be it a lem or a cow, thinking otherwise is just delusional. Unless Sony makes some colossal mistake on the PS6 launch there isn't any way for MS to out console them. Best of chances would take them a couple of decades. And they might get there but they would still be wasting growth.
So I honestly don't get the reactions to this interview. Microsoft focus shouldn't be out consoling their direct competitors but to push the market to a place where they can grow beyond that. Which is what they're trying to do.

AKA, they can't beat Sony or Nintendo, so they shift the goalpost.
@nod_calypse: Yeah, in a way just like Sony panicked with the Activision acquisition because they know they can't keep up with that kind of move.
Or how after the Wii U failure Nintendo took a gamble with the Switch and won.
Businesses have to play to their strengths not to the competition's. Phil just stated the obvious, they won't win the console race but they're not (just) in that race.
Now, is he doing a good job executing that strategy? That's a whole different conversation.
I know this is literally like trying to have a conversation with a cabbage but anyway...

@nod_calypse: Why are you cows so obsessed with everything Xbox?
Boredom. Nothing to play on PS... what else is new.
Nothing but lemming tears lol. Their boss admits he’s a loser, their latest AAA is one of the worst in 10 years, and ABK blocked lmao.
While both Sony ánd Nintendo produce BANGERS after BANGERS with 85+ and even 10's...all Microsoft has to offer are shitty 4/10's and 60 MetaCritic games.
I'd be fucking LIVID seeing the competition getting to play Octopath Traveler 2, Tears of the Kingdom, Horizon: Burning Shores, Spiderman, God of War. BANGERS AFTER BANGERS.
...and all Microsoft has to offer is Redfall hahahahahahahaha
Microsoft came to the conclusion that they can't beat Sony in the home console market when they introduced Xbox Play Anywhere way back in 2016.. this isn't news for anyone paying attention..
when you can't compete, you make a pivot.. that's just good business strategy..
for example, Nintendo realized they couldn't win in the traditional home console spec race, so they pivoted to a different strategy with the Wii and have since perfected it with the Switch; they're strengths being timeless IP and handhelds..
heck, Sony couldn't compete with Nintendo in the handheld market and exited that playing field entirely..
Currently, Microsoft's strategy is indeed working.. across Consoles, PC, and cloud, they've grown the Xbox brand to having the most monthly active users of the big three and the Xbox division is doing better than ever financially..
But ultimately, any strategy hinges on great 1st party games.. Xbox simply has to do better in that regard.. no more excuses and no more "just wait"..
I don’t care. I never have. I’m not on the payroll so who “wins” is nonsense to me. I play games on all their devices I own.
@Locutus_Picard: lmao 🤣 what a 🤡. What bangers has ps5 released?? Gow, which is the same as gow 2018, no real change. It has high review scores, but nobody cares about movie game, narratives. Meanwhile more people are playing Xbox than ever before, the service is releasing REAL bangers on a consistent basis, heck we got tunic, we got pentimate (goty contender 2022) and we got hi fi rush. We got ghostwire Tokyo and deathloop all the best versions and best quality. Bangers after bangers after bangers.
This was all in the span of the past few months and FREE on gamepass. You should let THAT sink in.
What have cows gotten recently?? Gow?? The library is so sad, and even jedi survivors runs at a pathetic 648p 🤢. On top of that $70 games 🤣
Xbox is the present and future deal with it. And the fact that regulators need to step in to try and stop the growth of Xbox shows how scared they are of us, heck yeah.
Lamborghini owners don’t care if Lamborghini doesn’t sell as many cars as Ford….It’s May 13th, and Sony still hasn’t released a game for the ps5 this year.
Don't care about MS, their consoles, games and even less about Phil Spencer. But thinking that MS would sell more consoles than Nintendo or PS would be out of touch with reality. What he says sounds correct, so I'm not sure why anyone would be annoyed by it, unless he just made it harder for you trying to ignore reality. So I'm glad Phil Spencer isn't that stupid, I guess.
That lentil soup looks delicious though.
Even that 4/10 car is better than what Sony has been offering this year….zip, zero, nada.

Sony doesn't offer dogwater games🤦♂️If something is not ready to launch, it will be in the oven until it is. MS on the other hand, they damage their brand and reputation releasing the worst game the gaming industry has seen in over a decade. I wish you could understand that, sealionact.
@Locutus_Picard:

Explain to me how xbox is the present and future if they're in 3rd place and haven't even sold as much as a handheld console from 2017? Explain to me how they're the future when they keep releasing first party games that review 4/10 on IGN even?
Regulators are stepping in because they don't want Microsoft tainting more studios.
@blaznwiipspman1: Ragnarok didn't just get high review scores. It also sold more and, won more awards than all of those games you mentioned combined. Heck, Raganrok released in the same year as Elden Ring and, still won more GOTY awards than any Xbox or Bethesda game has in the last 12 years. It's a certified S-tier banger.
@NoodleFighter: "I'm a PC guy but after hearing what he said I think he should step down from being leader of Xbox his defeatist".
My thoughts exactly. I never thought much of Phil Spencer. He should either step down or be fired.
