It's rated Mature, not because it is mature, but because the images depicted in the game are not suitable for the average 17> person.
Would you let your 10 year old son play GOW3?J-WOWIf he is mature enough sure. Age has nothing to do with it.
Would you let your 10 year old son play GOW3?J-WOWyes i would, as long as im with him teaching him whats right and whats wrong except the sex scene even GOW3 has some cartoony aspects to it that seem made for kids only
how so? so your saying mature games are mature yet not mature? It's rated Mature, not because it is mature, but because the images depicted in the game are not suitable for the average 17> person.

Would you let your 10 year old son play GOW3?J-WOWOf course he would It's perfectly ok for a 10 yr old kid to see graphics images of someone getting their head ripped off, or someone pounding a man to a bloody pulp and or someone blanking the blank out of two women with their breasts showing... wouldn't you?

Mature content =/= Mature mentality. Games rated M have mature content, which is considered unsuitable for children.
[QUOTE="Raymundo_Manuel"]how so? so your saying mature games are mature yet not mature? They're not for young kids, but they're not what you would call sophisticated either. They usually just get the "m" rating because of cursing, violence, and sometimes raunchy behavior. It's rated Mature, not because it is mature, but because the images depicted in the game are not suitable for the average 17> person.

What about Halo?
I mean the stuff in that game I'm pretty sure a 15 year old can understand.
Would you let your 10 year old son play GOW3?J-WOW
Yup, I would let them play Manhunt too. Violence in games is fake and any child who is that age (and right in the head) will understand you can't put a bag over someones head while you can in the game. Something like Rapeplay would be iffy as if the kid doesn't understand what sex is they are going to end up more confused then anything, and asking mommy about the rape simulator would be an interesting conversation.
Meh, I played Doom and Duke3D when I was little and came out fine. *Twitch*tagyhagLook out, demons!
No. God of War's focus on excessive violence and stereotypical sexual themes make it a very immature game, actually. Sure, I enjoyed it, but especially the sex scenes were actually quite embarassing to anyone over 18.
True maturity shines through in gameplay anyway.
Yep. I sure would. I played GTA 2 at age 7. Then I played the third at age 12, or somewhere around there. So you'd be alright with a 10 year old kid playing this*Sorry for gigantic image*

No, I'm saying Mature games are labeled that way because of the fear that some kid might come along and play the game, and get confused as to what they're seeing.
Running someone over, and shooting up a bunch of people is not something you just want every eight year old to see, let alone control.
No I wouldn't let my 10 year old play M rated games for a few reasons:
- If it's online I don't want others to have to hear his annoying pre-pubescent voice.
- It doesn't matter if your 10 year old is mature enough to understand the difference between real life and videogames. Just the fact that there is death/sex/swearing in the games has a good chance of having an effect in their behaviour in one way or another.
Maybe from the perspective of a 13 year old. I on the other hand have found that the most "mature" game I've played this gen is Little King's Story for Wii. It's rated T, but it deal with much much much more complex and mature themes than any blood-fest shooter this gen. Killzone 2 may be rated M but it's probably the least mature game I've seen this gen, it's a bunch of macho men spouting dumb one liners. LKS, while not as violent (well... it is but it's not graphic at all) deals with religion, concepts of a higher being, world domination, and greed. I'd be hard pressed to find many games this gen with such mature thematic content.
All this aside, games that get the M rating deserve that rating because the graphical and audial material is intended for people aged 17 or over. It doesn't imply that the game itself is mature, unless you're about to insinuate that MadWorld is a mature game .
you all act like like kids are stupid not to understand r elastic to video games rcafanIt's said that little kids are like a sponge, they absorb whatever they see. You really want every 8 year old kid to become obsessed with killing and blood?
I dont understand what the discussion is, the games are m for mature because they dont want young kids playing games about killing others violently and cursing. If your talking about people thinking they are more mature for playing M games then thats different. In that case, to me, mature is getting a job, raising a family, or finishing school, etc. Playing video games no matter what rating is not mature, there is no difference between playing Kirbys epic yarn or Gears of War 3, your not mature because your playing a more violent game.
the word mature (when it's used to rate games) is associated with what is age appropriate withing the game. I.E, things minors shouldn't technically be seeing or hearing (blood, gore, cussing, alcohol , nudity)
Bayonetta's a perfect example of this. she's oversexualized, certain characters cuss and there's blood. however, it is in no way a "mature" in the regular sense. It doesn't take itself seriously and it's mostly having a fun with itself.
Guys, the topic should really be more about the Mature Rating than "Kids playing Mature Rated Games".
I mean it's not that Kids don't want to play M rated Games. It's that SOME M rated games look like they're more geared toward the TEENAGE area.
So shouldn't some Mature Rated Games be Rated T instead?
I can't believe people would let a 10 year old play GOW3. I understand maybe 15 or 13 but 10 is just way out of it. I also understand as a kid wanting to play those games but LETTING them play it is bad.
It's also funny a game that is Mature rated is actually not mature at all. Legend of Zelda is alot more mature about it's themes then say Kilzone 2 which makes it mature with lots of sweary-words
It's sad that people consider buckets of blood and boobs and liberal use of the F word to be "mature".
Was thinking the same thing. It's sad that people consider buckets of blood and boobs and liberal use of the F word to be "mature".

When I think of actual Mature games,I think of stuff like.
Silent Hill 2
The Longest Journey Series
Braid
Super Metroid and Metroid Prime
Planescape Torment
Legacy of Kain series
Deus Ex
SOTC
Beyond Good and Evil
....just to name a few
Ironically,I find games that have a M rating slapped on their cases for juvenile things like "Violence/Gore" "Sex" and "Language"..... very immature.

I started playing Starcraft when I was 6.
I'm sure I don't need to tell you how much stuff goes on in there that is "unsuitable" for children. But I never got confused about it. That point is moot.
I guess the thing about M rated games back then was that whenever someone young played it, it was mostly single player or offline. One was limited to the game itself. Now because of how heavy a lot of M rated games are about online, whenever someone plays an M rated game, they "socialize" with random strangers and bring their colorful "vocabulary" over the internet to others.

Honestly, I would love to see a game receive an M rating from the ESRB without receiving the categories blood, violence, or sex.

Exactly. Mature games have content which isnt suitable for children. Thats usualy all. They arent on any higher level of mentality or anything. At least most of them.
But I dont like the idea that anyone below 17 cant play the game. I used to play GTA1 when I was like 7. I used to get a flamethrowe and tried to burn as many people as I could. And I dont think it affected me in any way. Physical age has nothing to do with psychological age.
Rating "M" and mature are two diffrent things.
Mature definition = Showing the mental, emotional, or physical characteristics associated with a fully developed person; involving serious thought.
Rating "M" = usual deffinition on games bucket of blood, a stream of foul profanity and a parade of naughty lady parts. Ironically, the very things that are included to win overimmature teenage boys.

I totally agree with the mature content vs mature mentality. If someone cannot differentiate those two then I don't know what to say... Further note, I played Mortal Kombat 2 when I was like 7 or 8 years old.. It's not as bad as people make it out to be. I guess I'm different, and I was different when I was a kid. I was always more "mature" than the other kids who would start beating up their brothers and sisters because they saw Rambo the other night. Please Log In to post.
