Some do. Aside from the mindlessly violent games out there, there are a lot out there that also rely on great storytelling or grim realism to captivate you like an R rated movie could (some would've benefited from being a T rated game if they toned down the violence that seems ridiculous, and some would benefit from it as it is, to give you a good vibe of the game).

I can't believe people would let a 10 year old play GOW3. I understand maybe 15 or 13 but 10 is just way out of it. I also understand as a kid wanting to play those games but LETTING them play it is bad.

But does the blood turned off mode stop the game from ripping eye sockets out and stuff like that. I know I used to play violent games as a kid (still 15) but really GOW3 may desensitise kids to violence so I think allowinga ten year old to play GOW3 (this is god of war btw) is a bit of a bad move. Also allowing them to play Manhunt is a bit off too.

Good question and no, most aren't. If it includes big guns, big words and big "assets", I do not consider it mature :P

When I grow up and have children, they can play whatever the hell they want, because things like "language and violence" are absolute BS reasons for not letting them play.

I already knew my swears when I was seven. I saw violence all around me and on the news when I was little. Blood and gore in video games is nothing bad.

[QUOTE="rcafan"]you all act like like kids are stupid not to understand r elastic to video games oldkingallant
It's said that little kids are like a sponge, they absorb whatever they see. You really want every 8 year old kid to become obsessed with killing and blood?

Oh god come on.. This is false, violent crimes are going DOWN not up.. But you would think by your ridiculous claim they would be going up seeing as more and more little kids are playing violent video games.. That being said NO.. They have mature themes, but the actual mechanics of the game and subject matter outside of depictions of sex and violence could hardly be considered "mature".. The games played today can be easily understood by the average 10 year olds when it comes to God of War..

This is due to the aging population which is less likely to commit violent crimes. If there are more younger people, there is more violent crimes.

Mature games are obviously mature, and I should know because I am an extremely mature person. Boobies (hee hee).

Depends on the game. Some just have mature content for the sake of that content (i.e. Madworld, Gears of War, etc.) while others are actually centred around adult themes and mature things that only adults would understand (Eternal Darkness, System Shock 2, Mass Effect, etc.).

It's rated Mature, not because it is mature, but because the images depicted in the game are not suitable for the average 17> person.

LegatoSkyheart

What about Halo?

I mean the stuff in that game I'm pretty sure a 15 year old can understand.

Halo plays a alien Holocaust story according to all these sites about people asking if its ok for teens and whatnot. This is kind of sad that I don't know considering I have played every Halo but Reach.

the content is inappropriate for people under a certain age. Any one who says that hardcore=M is just silly. Running around with lots of blood, sex, and guns is so far from mature

Don't mix up violent games with mature games. Over-the-top violence is by no means mature.

I've not known many 17 year olds who behaved maturely. It's just a label indicating age appropriateness, and nothing more.

So whats the point of the topic again? I'm pretty sure no one thinks Mortal Kombat and Conker's Fur Day are mature in how they act and treat situations. The Rating is based on the content, blood, sexual reference, etcetera. Regardless, these mature rated games are clearly not for children. The ways in which they are immature are for entertainment and generally shouldn't reflect how the player acts.

You don't use bump mapping in cartoony games. Ever. If there is bump mapping in cartoon game, they're doing it wrong.

Do I think rated M games feature mature content? Not really. They feature graphic content, which is rarely Mature. Example? Take you average slasher movie. They feature very little in the way of mature thought or themes. They are much more likely to feature nudity and gore just for the fun of it, which is puerile.

Do I think M rated games should be purchasable by minors? Nope. If a parent educated about a game decided to buy a M rated game for their minor, I'm not gonna go head hunting. They know their kid. Unfortunately, most of the kids playing M rated games have parents that either are ignorant of the content in the game, or parents that don't actually know the kid/s have the game at all. I know minors find this unpopular, but there's lots of games/other media to occupy their time with in the mean time. And kids are the worst judge of what is best for them... that's why we as a society deem them minors and hold others legally responsible for their actions. Why be in such a rush to expose yourself to such things? I mean, seriously, M/R/X rated media isn't going anywhere... and as most those exposed to such content already know, M rated games aren't often better because of graphic content. In fact, M rated games often use such devices as a crutch to mask shallow game play.
