A few days ago I was helping my friend decide what system to get (he plays on PC but also wants a console) and I told him that he should get the one that has the exclusives he wants the most. I didn't mention anything about mulitplats as I can't honeslty for the life of me tell the difference in 90% of them, even in the so called "bad" cases like red dead redemption, black ops ect... Same goes for in cases when the PS3 version is supposedly "superior" like Dragon Age, or LA Noir ect... I can't really tell if one's "inferior" or not. I'm being COMPLETELY serious here, I can't .

But I hear alot of people talk about how the PS3 versions are practically train wrecks and that the 360 is the system to get for multiplats and that only a fool would buy a PS3 multiplat (their words, not mine). The quesion is, did I give my friend the right advice? I told him other stuff like which controller he prefers, the diffferences between the online services and the pro's and cons of each network ect... But I didn't mention multiplats at all because the issue didn't even cross my mind at the time, I just never really considered it an issue.

But I would feel bad if my friend ends up with a multiplat exprience that he is dissapointed with. I don't know if he can see if a difference or not, just because I can't doens't mean everyone elsecan't does it? He doesn't go to stupid sites like Lens of Truth or anything like that (neither do I) nor has he ever cared to.

I guess I'm just feeling a little worried about my advice, any help? Did I give him the right info or did I screw him over?

Didn't you say he games on a PC? He should probably buy the Multi-Plats on there. :P And the Multiplats on 360 and PS3 version are usually just fine, I don't think most people care about minor things like extra leaves or Small Framerate drops. :P

If you only own one system then it wouldn't matter. If you own more than one system, and you have all the power in the world to buy the version of a game that runs the best, and looks the best, then you should do that.

Mostly yes, and as of now Sony aren't allowed to compensate for it due to the obvious policy by MS.

In most cases, the system that a game is developed for ends up being the better version than on the system that a game is ported over on. That's the case for FFXIII, Fallout 3 and Bayonetta. Red Dead Redemption might look slightly better on 360, but the PS3 version has exclusive content, so extra content trumps graphics.

Usually the slight edge of a multiplat is on the 360 version but 9/10 its not big enough to notice

From what I gather from what developers say it tends to be far easier to develop on the 360 then the ps3

But I can't see any of it. I can't honestly tell if a multiplat game has a higher resolution or more stable framerate than another. Am I not seeing something, I mean my eye sight isn't perfect but I just don't know... Only like Bayonetta did I see a huge difference, same thing with Splinter Cell Double Agent, I played it on 360 at a friends house and when I got on PS3 the framerate was definatley slower. But it had some more multiplayer maps than 360 did so it makes up for it.

Beyond that though I can't tell

Sounds to me like you gave him the correct advice: get the system with the exclusives you prefer the most. To me that's more important than slight differences in multiplats.

I don't generally see the differences either. The only real noticable differences are the when they have performance issues.

I wonder the same thing, I see alot of people talk about it being the "inferior" version on PS3. But like I said, for the LIFE of me I cannot tell what they are talking about.

It depends on how big the difference is, but a trained eye can tell. That said you most likely won't tell the difference between 30fps on a PS3 game, and 35fps on the 360, or the textures between both. You will begin to notice certain things like that when they actually interrupt gameplay such as a framerate drop, or if graphical artifacts pop up on screen.

Generally, 360 multiplats are technically superior to PS3 multiplats, but it's not set in stone.

Strictly between 360 and PS3, yes, %90 of multiplats that I have seen are inferior in either : resolution, framerates, aliasing, or some other issues on the PS3. The differences are not huge, usually about %10 but sometimes big difference like 1080p upcale vs 720p (or lower) raw For a person owning only a PS3, this really is no problem, games are still fun, look decent and play well. PS3 exclusives on the other hand pretty much outclass everything on the 360, in terms of crispness, color palette, and just plain looking good. Say whatever you want, Nvidia has better colors than ATI. 360 uses a variant of DirectX resulting in all games having a "canned" look, that is to say they look great, but the rendering all looks the same across different games. PS3 uses QAA which result in "vaseline-o-vision" which PS3 multiplats are known for. Most of the multiplats considered superior on PS3 is only because of hi-rez cutscenes from Bluray, otherwise the 360 game tends to be sharper, crisper and runs at higher framerates. Choosing between the two, it comes down to : 1. Where your friends are 2. Which exclusives you like better 3. Which controller you like better 4. Whether you play alot of stuff online (360 has better online service, definitively, and you will never convince me otherwise.) Source : I own both 360 and PS3 and use them extensively.

just tell him exactly what you told us about your perception of multiplats (if that's truely what you feel about them) and you'll hopefully have a clear conscience.

Depends on the game. Plenty of games have been "better" on ps3. The differences are usually minor, and the only reason we know about them is because there are websites dedicated to pointing the differences out to us.

It's kind of like technical aspects of games and how so many "gamers" use them as ammo to show what actually looks better. The only reason anyone knows what techniques are used in games is because developers tell them, but the games themselves don't always look any better becasue of them. Kind of like Crysis 2. All these techniques that don't result in a better looking product, but they do result in a worse perfoming product.

Bar a few extreme cases you most likely couldn't tell the difference between the two until you zoom in and examine pixels. Side by side they will most likely look the same.

That use to be more common, but in the past year or two the differences between multiplats has become so minuscule that it really isn't something readily noticeable. I think you gave your friend great advice. Unless he's regularly visiting Lens of Truth, Digital Foundry, or is Planning on joining Gamespot, he'll probably never be aware of any differences.

Because standards are changing sooner on the 360. It's simple really. The sun rises in the west, and the 360 is made by a western company, so therefore 360 games are always older than Playstation games.

MGS4 Came out in 2008, Gears 2 came out in 2008. Both are brag worthy (Though both are terrible imo)

Uncharted 2 came out in 2009, Forza 3 came out in 2009. Both are brag worthy (and both are fantastic)

It depends on the game.

FFXIII is better on PS3

Bayonetta is better on 360

Red Dead Redemption is better on PS3

Fallout 3 is better on 360

despite what cows would you to believe, it's proven that most multiplats are noticeably inferior on the ps3

True. Though I blame the fact that games are made for 360 then ported to the PS3.If a dev gave the same amount of time for each system for the same game, they'll be equal.

They'd be as close as possible. The way they render things would make sure that the games would never be 100% "equal" though.

Sorry but having more content makes the PS3 version better than a slightly higher resolution on the 360, unless one is a shallow graphics whore that is. ;)
