Poll Are reviewers still afraid of bombing big games? (SFV) (57 votes)

Yes, just like at SFV. 53%
Maybe, but SFV is a good game. 39%
Reviewers are always right, you Xbot! 9%

As everyone knows, SFV just launched but the content is so bare bones that it is embarrassing for the price, yet it sits at AA status at game rankings. We have seen this before, with turds like FFXIII getting high scores based on name alone. Will GameSpot give this game the 6 score it deserves?

Reviewers are the worst! Even when they are right.

Still better than player reviews on metacritic.

Most reviewers are mentioning the missing content and features. Only crap consumers look at just the score and buy a game.

@JangoWuzHere: What about people who say," I liked Street Fighter 2 Turbo on the Snes and haven't bought a Street Fighter game since. I'm feeling nostalgic, I'm going to pick this up." Get home and find out it has no damn player vs. cpu! This could have happened to me if not for these forums and my video game researching ocd.

Hm? I haven't actually read a review for the game yet which didn't mention the online problems and lack of content.

See, that comes down to subjectivity, opinions, that sort of thing. It sounds like the critics reviewing SF5 give ore weightage to how it plays than to the content it has and how it will be distributed, which is why they think it is an 8+ game.

Reviewers of big websites are pressured to keep the sales flowing. That's why they are in fact afraid to tank big named Western titles. On the flip side, they are almost encouraged to give low scores to Japanese games to make Western games look better and sell better.

Over there in Japan, the opposite is also true. It's just a regional and cultural bias.

@charizard1605: I have hard time figuring out how can be justified that a game with broken online and almost no SP content warrants an 8. In fact, I bet if this game was re-skinned with another brand we would be seeing lots of negative scores, which is the point of the poll.

There's no "conspiracy" just cultural policy to maximize sales and interest in one's own country. They've been doing it for years, like giving Pokemon games low scores with the justification that they add little to the new games, but give annual franchises like Call of Duty high scores while they do the exact same thing. That's just one of many examples.

I do think that reviewers are prepared to give a AAA pioneering fighter like SF5 the benefit of the doubt that it'll get better because the developer says it will and call it a review in progress. Had a game like Skull Girls come out in the same state as SFV with more content promised down the road, I'm sure a lot more of them would have given it something closer to a 5 or 6 due to all the missing features and moved on.

If this were Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash, boy o boy, would score a solid 5. But this aint no Nintendo game, it scores a 9. These reviewers are hypocrites.

Yup, it's just cultural prejudice. No wonder Japanese games like MGSV, Bloodborne, and Bayonetta 2 were considered shit tier by websites. Western releases like The Order 1886, Mad Max, and Star wars Battlefront were highly praised game of the year contenders.

Oh wait, that's actually a load of crap and completely untrue.

Yep, you're right. Every reviewer treats all regions equally, has not cultural differences, has zero bias, are perfect people. You cherry pick a few titles and say it's impossible for reviewers to do any wrong. That, my friend, is a load of crap and completely untrue. Keep living in your perfect little dreamworld of heroes.

I never said ALL games were judged incorrectly with heavy bias, but a lot of them are. To notice, you'd have to be a fan of niche Japanese games. IGN is the biggest culprit of this. They find small cultural differences, complain about them and give a lot of niche Japanese games low scores because of it. It's like "why play the games if you hate them so much?" and the answer is: they have to review them to avoid being seen as one-sided.

It's funny how a majority of posters accept that they do that in Japan: disliking a lot of Western games released over there, but "oh nooo, that just doesn't happen in the West!".

Can I have what you're smoking? Obviously, there is no cultural bias going on, it's just that some games are out unfinished and don't deserve any recognition especially a high review.

So, you're crying that niche Japanese games get bad reviews? Maybe that a vast majority of gamers don't care for them?

Or maybe you're just super biased and think that a majority means something special? I mean you're always talking about "weaboo" this and "weaboo" that, and people call you "microsoft_man" for a reason. Now go stand in line with the rest of the dudebro brain dead bots.

Alright, this is neither here nor there and I probably shouldn't ask but I've wondered it so many times. Why are you calling yourself FireEmblem_Man and still complaining about Weeaboos all the time? Isn't that a "Weeaboo" game from Japan? Is this irony or something? I'm just confused and mean no ill will.

Pretty much all major Japanese releases this year were praised highly. Heck, even crap games like Xenoblade X are a hit with critics. There is nothing to prove that such cultural bias exists. Also, you do realize what niche means right? Obviously, a Japanese game with a limited western fanbase isn't going to set the world on fire. Dynasty Warriors didn't tickle fancies a decade ago, it isn't going to start now.

We just screw around on SW because we've been here so long. Most know this and it's really extra giggly when some don't know we're not being serious.

@JangoWuzHere: It's just a stupid shtick bro. I do think there is some cultural bias in all regions though, I mean it's human nature to think your side is superior. But no, I don't believe the review system is as fvcked up as what I said.

People forget that these games are reviewed at a certain point where some issues are not apparent during their playthrough. Remember MCC got really good scores. Until after the release when it was discovered that it the multiplayer was not functioning properly enough. Scores were changed as a result of the issues being so severe and long lasting. Servers going down for a small period of time is fixable, although annoying. Free content will be delivered to SFV as already explained by Capcom.

@FireEmblem_Man: Awesome! I got my snack. Go!

Well, it all started in Middle School when I was once a huge Nintendo Fan, I always have felt that owning a PS1 was stupid and an anti-social console compared to the N64 with its Multiplayer goodness and better graphics at its time. My friends and I enjoyed playing hours of Super Smash Bros. 64 every weekend. When in my final days of 8th grade, my friends and I would start talking about "Dolphin" and how it will destroy Sony. Then in my Freshman year of High School, I still had dialed up internet btw, I got a Gamecube and then got Super Smash Bros. Melee. My friends and I managed to get almost every character until we got a new and unknown challenger. Marth was that character and I never heard of him until I looked up his trophy profile. I never heard of Fire Emblem and with the slow internet, downloading Roms and Emulators was the talk of my Lunch Period table as I sat with a bunch of nerds that were obsessed with Anime (Notably Dragon Ball Z) and video games. So, despite my slow internet, I was able to download NES emulators and found Fire Emblem games available.

Despite me not knowing Japanese I tried them out and I was hooked. A couple years later I finally got Broadband and discovered patching Roms with fan translation and got a SNES emulator with Fire Emblem 4: Geneology. Then I discovered Gamespot.com at the time Reggie was hired as a new PR for Nintendo and unvealed the greatest handheld of all time, the DS, and then Iwata gave hints about project "Revolution," which became the Wii.

I wanted to be different than other System Wars users and came up with the name FireEmblem_Man because I felt that not everyone at the board ever played the game so I felt cool about it! I was also at my stage of liking Anime despite me only being a fan of DBZ, Yu Yu Hakusho, Naruto, and Bleach. I felt like I wasn't really into Japanese Culture when I grew older. I hated Microsoft because they wanted to destroy Nintendo at the time, but it wasn't until I got an Xbox 360 and Dead or Alive 4 for the first time. I thought I liked JRPG games more, but I was more hooked with Oblivion, Fallout, The Witcher, and Dragon Age. Yes, I can change my name or make an alternative as I'm now known as A_Regular_Guy on another Forum (ask @jg4xchamp). I don't feel like losing this name as I'm attached to it.

@FireEmblem_Man: I see! Awesome read, thank you. You are definitely more of a Weeaboo (even if reformed) than me but thats ok. I'm a Weeaboo friendly person! I like Akira.

The game has no SP features, and the online is broken; it's highly suspect that it garnered over an 80 MetaCritic score on its merit.

You like that OG Weeaboo. Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, and some Ninja Scroll.

@mesome713: Yeah, I've thought of watching those, been recommended that before, but I don't think it's been on Netflix or anything. I thought Ghost in the shell was ok. I remember liking Paprika.

@mark1974: I was about to name Berserk, but sometimes people have no clue on that one. So had to swap for Ninja Scroll. Yeah, Ghost in the Shell is good old one too.

This is funny how everyone says SFV was bare bones and metacritic gave IT good reviews, but Mario Tennis Ultra Smash had that small amount of content too (which everyone complained about), but it got bad scores.

Edit: Food for thought.

Peter Brown is absolutely going to annihilate this game in his review, did anyone see The Lobby video about his time with the game, what he's experienced and what is still taking place?

He looks tired, frustrated, stunned and extremely disappointed...

@speak_low: I don't know who Daigo, Xian and Justin Wong are neither I should. And reviewers should review based on what is presented, not on promises.
