Of course you can. Your first post showed that. Hell all your posts show that.

@nyadc: Leave him. You're not going to get any constructive arguments from him. I guess anything that has risk of injury is sport. Good to know that my job as a Civil Engineer is in fact a Sport (i.e. I'm not stationary and risk of injury is well ... there can be fatal accidents)!
sportspɔːt/noun
Where about's does "Civil Engineer" fall under entertainment because it sure as hell doesn't.
If you were a Civil engineer you would know it can be very 'entertaining'.
PS - I know it doesn't. Read his reasoning about a sport then you might understand why I said what I said.

@StrongBlackVine: that's not true. As much as I hate it, NASCAR is very much a sport. They have to have some pretty good conditioning to not only sit in place for six hours in the same position but to also not fall asleep because it's fucking NASCAR
Yes Motorsports are an exception to that statement. Although they are sitting down they definitely are not stationary and risk of injury is high.
So what you're saying is that you get to set the standards and definitions of what is and is not a sport? You're sitting down and not stationary when you're gaming, so because racing has a risk of injury it qualifies as a sport yet competitive gaming does not? There's absolutely no continuity to anything you're saying.
You must think that competitive gaming is easy or something, I really hope that is not the case because you would be sorely, sorely mistaken..
No, the definition is pretty clear. You're the one trying to change the definition of a word. Sports require physical skill and exertion. Is working all day at a computer a sport? because thats the same level of physical exertion that competitive gaming requires.
No one is saying that competitive gaming is easy, its just not a sport because it doesn't require the physical skill or conditioning that real sports require.
This is not true in any capacity, while competitive gaming has not been 'officially' classified as a sport as of yet (it will be inevitably), it fits every qualification and definition set out by SportAccord for a mind/coordination sport, SportAccord is literally the end all be all of federal sports organizations. Working at a computer is not a sporting or competitive event just as shoveling dirt outside is not a sporting or competitive event, your analogy is horrible.
Physical exertion is what sports are generally known for because that is what they derived from, they're a product of their time and technological limitations, that doesn't mean other things which have come since the physical age such as non-physical games are not sports. You're simply the type of person living in the past who can't get over and dispute the validity of something that has every possible valid reason for a sports classification, because it is. It's all in the works right now, it's 100% going to happen, it's just a matter of time and you dinosaurs are making yourselves look like ignorant asses fighting it.
Did you really just say that competitive gaming doesn't require physical skill or conditioning? You're on drugs, try being good at a game like Counter-Strike competitively without extremely honed hand/eye coordination, reaction time and perfected muscle memory. Try being good at a game like Counter-Strike competitively without practicing hundreds to thousands of hours, without understanding map layouts to a science, without knowing angles, flash points, smoke points, wall spams, positional tracking, map timings, recoil control and a deep knowledge of the overall metagame. Video games require just as much conditioning to be competitively successful, in many cases even more as there are countless more variables that need to be factored in.
I'm talking to a bunch of casual gamers right now who don't know the first thing about competitive gaming, playing a game in a league, playing in tournaments, you people are ignorant beyond belief.
The SportAccord has developed a definition of sport to determine whether an applicant federation qualifies as an international sports federation.
SportAccord's definition of Sport is the following definition:
- The sport proposed should include an element of competition.
- The sport should not rely on any element of “luck” specifically integrated into the sport.
- The sport should not be judged to pose an undue risk to the health and safety of its athletes or participants.
- The sport proposed should in no way be harmful to any living creature.
- The sport should not rely on equipment that is provided by a single supplier.
SportAccord uses five categories for its member federations' sports, many of which fall into more than one category:
- Primarily physical (e.g. rugby or athletics)
- Primarily mind (e.g. chess or go)
- Primarily motorized (e.g. Formula One or powerboating)
- Primarily coordination (e.g. billiards)
- Primarily animal-supported (e.g. equestrianism)
By definition this is not a sport, and sure ass hell aren't athletes. However, they can call it what they want but E-Competition would be more accurate.
Oh man, nathandrakeswag is going to have a heart attack. Twitch numbers were his only argument for why halo is horrible lol
Halo does have terrible Twitch numbers. Go look right now and its nowhere to be found. Getting a temporary boost from a tournament being held on ESPN for 1 day out of months of irrelevancy means nothing.
@flyincloud1116: word. if they're gonna call their competitions something really stupid like e-sports they need to just go all the way stupid and do something like Cyber Warz. trying to seem legitimate by calling it a sport just seems like they're trying too hard to be taken seriously.

Both of those are free to play so everyone has access to them. Plus poker is universally popular. Who doesn't like texas hold em?

Trying too hard to be taken seriously? Because it is serious... These positions are literally careers for people, they are professionals and make tens, hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars. There are multi-million and multi-billion dollar organizations at the helm of these leagues, tournaments and events, sponsors, millions of players, millions of teams, hundreds of millions of spectators, they have every format and backing available to them that every other sport does...
What do you not find serious about that?

it sounds like a stupid buzzword that a marketing department came up with because they wanted to sound hardcore. its stupid.
it sounds like a stupid buzzword that a marketing department came up with because they wanted to sound hardcore. its stupid.
Well that's a really cool story guy, and an extremely feeble and stupid argument... What would you call it exactly?
Do you find these names dumb as well? Electronic Sports League or Electronic Sports Entertainment Association?
it sounds like a stupid buzzword that a marketing department came up with because they wanted to sound hardcore. its stupid.

thats the entire point of my argument. its a stupid name because A) its not a sport and B) it sounds stupid. No idea what the **** you're arguing.

Like I said, you people are casual dinosaurs who can't get with the times.

But its not a sport. Its not because I don't find it to be, its because by its very definition its not. Now, if you were talking about a Madden or NBA 2k tournament then you could make an argument for calling that an esport. People playing Halo or Counterstrike isn't a sport

Well I don't give a shit what you find or do no find to be, to people that actually matter, the millions and millions of them including myself who take part and contribute to it, it is one... What kind of dumb double think logic is that... So a sports game can be an esport but a different form of equally competitive game cannot? That completely contradicts itself and everything you've said... A video game is a video game you casual nightmare, holy shit....

Doesn't contradict anything at all. Madden is by definition is an electronic version of a real sport. Halo multiplayer isn't

@lostrib: Those nerds are not athletes so I agree with her. E-sports is a joke to be called a sport. Look at what the average pro gamer looks like...a physically sub-par male.
Not saying the competition should not exists because it's a positive thing, but videogames are not sports.
We're referred to as cyber athlete's by the way, also you're the joke. You're not even a competitive gamer in any capacity and I'll bet you fit the "physically sub-par male" designation you so choose to impose on others because of what they do.
Why is competitive gaming not a sport? It's very mentally intensive, it requires amazing talent, deep knowledge of the metagame, experience, dedication, practice, dexterity, consistency, reaction speed, muscle memory, ability to communicate, situational awareness and reaction, game sense and so on and so forth. You not considering competitive gaming a sport means less than nothing, because you yourself and your opinion on it mean less than nothing.
You are the definition of salt, and someone who can't get with the times.
@lostrib: Yeah because most e-sports players look like that. That's an exception, not the norm.
And your point is what?
My body isn't sub-par. I work out 6 days a week and eat healthy, only drink socially and don't smoke.
My point is these dorky looking guys are not athletes and it is an insult to real athletes to even try to put them in the same class.
Gaming is as much as of a sport as a spelling bee contest.
The competition is fine and think it's great that some people can make a living doing something they enjoy like playing games, but it's not a damn sport.
The definition of "sport" reads as follow; "an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment."
Going by that definition, it's a sport.
whats that? i cant hear you with your head buried in all that salt.

3 days. Each day the x game's halo wc was held it's twitch numbers until the gold medal match on Saturday kept on rising. The twitch numbers have also been going up erecently whenever one of those weekend qualifiers are held. Halo 5's twitch numbers are usually not that strong compared to some games, but it's still impressive how it was able to get over 40K viewers watching the x games event on saturday even though the HWC finals are like a month away.Even 343i was happy about it.It was also on tv on the weekend.

They have to be in very good shape because it's physically demanding to drive a car at those speeds. The G forces makes it feel like you're driving with 20lbs weights on your arms. It's a lot more demanding than people realize.
I dont know but Sony does have a major tournament game coming soon(SF5).
I'm very pleased with what MS has been doing although I read earlier on this site that it was Xgames that approached the Halo tourney and not the other way around.
Pretty sure I also read an article over the weekend on IGN stating that RB6 is getting a pro gaming league or something like that, but only on PC and Xbox One. I think with how H5 turned out(emphasis on the competitive play) and the Elite Controller they recently released, it seems Microaoft is definitely trying to appeal to that scene and I'm definitely happy as I love competitive play.

The rainbow six tourny is only for pc/xboxone? clever move microsoft. I wonder if ubisoft will do the same as 343 have make the profit of skins go towards the prize pool. That should be a standard from now on.
@lawlessx: Yeah the pro league is debuting in March it seems, they are saying RB6 was built with competitive gaming in mind and the prize pool is small (100k vs the 2M$ of Halo 5) . I agree things like skin packs to help fund the tourneys is a great idea.

just enough time to practice some more and find a decent group of players.
Pretty much. I mean, it's not like they put their games forward for e-sports either. Like they have had plenty of contenders over the years like Socom 2, Killzone 2, or even Uncharted 2 as they all have really great multiplayer modes. But you're siting Killer Instinct as good stuff and i'm like lol.
