I think if that money goes to polishing the game and delivering the best experience, then I would say yes. If you look at Sony games, games likes God of War and Horizon, they have very high quality presentation with effort that goes into all aspects of the game. So long as Sony continues to deliver on the quality, I would consider giving them $70 of my hard earned money! Granted, I think Ratchet and Clank could be worth the full price. Insomniac is a quality developer and I trust them to deliver quality in the next R&C game. At the end of the day, I think it's up to the person to decide if a game is worth $70 in their eyes.

What say you, SW? Are Sony games worth $70 in your opinion?

I don't need any game badly enough to pay £70 for it.

I'll either wait for a sale or for it to come to some kind of subscription service.

Yes, plus many others.

I’m still baffled that RE8 and Deathloop aren’t dipping their toes into charging more. Certainly makes it more difficult for Returnal.

If the game is good i don’t mind paying for it as long it’s playable. What I mean with playable is CyberPunk 2077 paid $60 and still sits on my shelf hoping they patch it soon.

@sheep99: what platform? It's perfectly playable on PC and my friend is completing the PS4 version on his PS5 and has loved it. Mind you, I 100% think it's worth waiting until the "big patches" unload (presumably at least one by Fall?), but more so that you get the better experience not so that it's "playable"

I bought Cyberpunk 2077 about a week ago,but only put around 2 hours into it because I’ve been busy lately but have had no issues with the game yet? Maybe I’ve been lucky? By the way it’s on my Xbox Series X.

Are PS5 exclusives worth $70? It depends what the game it is. Returnal is a good example, IMO, I don't think its worth $70 but than again, it is a brand new IP and a true next-gen game that's not cross-gen. From what I seen so far, it just tells me to wait for a sale. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart however looks awesome and I was impress with the gameplay, would I pay $70 to play it day one, absolutely. All in all, it just depends what PS5 game you think its worth paying $70.

By the way, Jim Sterling did a vid like 3 or 4 months ago regarding Sony's price increase. Jim's main points are:

  • The argument that game prices haven't kept up with inflation or development costs fails because game prices have increased over the last decade because the $60 price tag was merely the entry fee. The various forms of monetization that most games in 2020 have increase the actual price of the game well beyond $60 and even $70; season passes, battle passes, loot boxes, microtransaction cosmetics, deluxe editions, etc.
  • Any argument that suggests that publishers need the increase fails because both the revenue and profit for gaming has increased immensely over what it was when the $60 price was put in place. Furthermore, the actual staff developing the game haven't seen increased wages. The executives are the primary beneficiaries of these increased profits. These increased profits and revenue are reported by the publishers themselves, and they exist for several reasons:
  • Far larger audience buying the games
  • The huge shift to digital where profit margins are triple what they are in physical
  • The aforementioned monetization practices added to the games.

Well that's because they aren't Sony's PS5 exclusive, they are both made by 3rd-party that still charges $60 as the entry fee and the fact I'm buying RE8 on PC, I was able to pay $45 from CDkey and the best thing on PC, you can find good deals if you look elsewhere.

Would depend if I really like the franchise or if I'm really hyped for the game. Like for example I bought the complete Forza Horizon digital bundle at launch for $100. But that's very rare for me lol.

Yeah, true. I spent 80euro on Battlefield V as well.

I guess if you got your money's worth it's fine. I would pay 70euro for PS5 games like Horizon, God of War or The Last of us.

But maybe people would be less likely to spend that amount on new IP? ie. Returnal, as some people are already wary of gambling 60 euro away on new IP.

Nope! I have yet to play any Sony game that I am willing to or believe it is worth $70. These games are one and done games so their replayability is just not there. Couple this with the games being so heavily story driven with loads of mandatory walking sections which is worse than cutscenes. To make matters worse you have games releasing day one on GamePass, which makes this $70 price for just one game even harder to swallow.

Some are and some aren’t. For instance I would pay $70 for Ratchet & Clank but not for something like The Last of Us II.

I'm cheap and rarely pay full price for a game, I almost always wait for a good sale, so I'll say no game is worth $70 for my cheap ass.

Depends on the game. Uncharted, Ghost of Tsushima, God of War, Horizon, etc... definitely. Those are complete games on the disc and have had tons of polish for incredible presentation.

Games like Bugsnax, Destruction Allstars, and the like... no way. Bugsnax as an example was enjoyed by my 13 year old. It was a complete story but had little polish. Granted, it was made by a much smaller studio. Then games like Destruction Allstars that are more geared as a GaaS, no way in hell are they worth $70. The games are vastly incomplete when first launched and as soon as the servers are shut down for whatever reason... the game is over and unaccessible unless the dev snuck in some kind of offline mode which, luckily for Destruction Allstars, they did.

$70 is like a bar tab or B-Dubs for the wife and I. That’s for a couple hours of entertainment. A UFC ppv costs more than that. You gotta put the $70 price tag into perspective. But we know most “gamers” over value their money.

Meh, mixed feelings.

On one hand, I think the average price I pay is about 30 dollars per games; constant sales and the excellent quality and price of independent games keeps the price down.

On the other hand, the price of a new, alleged-AAA game has been 59.99 USD for a really long time. I think I was a young teen when the price went from 49.99 to 59.99 so that was at least 20 years ago.

Companies need to keep up with inflation like the rest of us. So I don't think a price increase is totally out of the question.

My issue, as always, is quality and content. I think anything marketed as a "Game as a Service" should have it's price reduced because the whole goal of games like that is to bleed you dry with DLC, vanity gear, and junk like that, so imo their initial cost should be lower. If a game offers a quality, complete, and lengthy experience, however, I see no problem spending 70 dollars.

No game is worth even $50 IMO. They make enough money through microtransactions and DLC and spend less on developing engines by rehashing the same in house engines over and over. As well as that, on PC there's no retail middle man anymore and its moving in that direction for consoles, if anything games should be cheaper.

Personally no. Not just because they're Sony games either. $70 is probably about as much as I'd feel ok spending on a really in-depth simulation game or something like that. Games I'd play through a couple of times and drop, not so much.

Still, mainstream overpricing isn't so bad for the indie market, so w/e.

I am ok with the price hike IF there are no hidden costs. Basically for the 70 bucks i want access to all the content and a fairly sizeable game.

If i pay more it better be for a proper expansion (like blood and wine say) and not for some little side quests.

if i am getting the complete game up front with no MTX stuff then fair enough. if the game has an in game store then the publisher is taking the piss.

@davillain-: your argument assumes that every game has DLC. Aren't we against that practice? We can't have it both ways. Games like cod have no business charging 70 bucks but something like say TLOU 3 or Horizon 2 does. Development costs have gone up significantly. Games were 50 to 60 bucks during the Snes days all the way up to last gen.

I wouldn't buy any game for that much. It's crazy that MS are just giving their games away on Gamepass day one and Sony bumped the price up of theirs as a response.

Don't know about $70 in the US, but £70 is quite a lot of money.

I think MS will pick up a lot of support with Gamepass during covid, for those in doors that don't want to spend a lot.

I'm OK w/ paying $70 for a game like Horizon or, God of War.

The games I'd be OK buying at $60 would be the same games I'd be OK buying at $70.

---

You can also wait for another opportunity to buy the game whether it's during a sale, a used copy etc.

It's fine for big AAA games. Devs have to make that money back if more AAA games are expected to be made. Costs are rising each gen and it's reasonable to charge more because of it. That being said, personally I typically wait for price reduction. Having jumped to PC gaming recently, I've been happily introduced to the wonderful world of near constant Steam/Gog/etc sales. It's a beautiful thing. But I do make an effort to support good devs in various ways.

Considering I'd rather play any number of a bunch of $20-$30 indie games over anything on the Playstation, I can only laugh at the thought of paying $70 for any game.

It's all double-standards to me that some Playstation people will harp over the prices on platforms they don't play yet try to justify the climbing prices on Playstation.
