Seems like a lot of people have been correcting those that include either of the Portal games as a FPS. I don't get this, I always thought "FPS" was indicating that the game was played in a first person perspective, nothing else about the game had to do with it. Just cause it says shooter in the name doesn't mean it has to be about shooting bullets into people's head. One could be shooting Portals (like Portal) or kicks (like Mirror's Edge). What do you guys think? (and yeah I know this doesn't really matter much)

I say it could be a shooter. I'm not so sure why the genre clarification matters so much to people (like SOME people like to give me crap about the Mirror's Edge bit), but I don't really care so much.

Is Mario a third person shooter? It shoots fireballs after all. Do we really have to redefine what a shooter is?

Btw gamespot changed the category of this game now from first person puzzle to sci fi fps which is lame but hey, who cares anyway.

It's not a shooter, therefore it's not a first-person shooter. A shooter is an action-focused game. People calling it an FPS are being hyper-literal.

Mario is third person but nobody calls it third person shooter like they call Dead space. If you want to look so closely you can find a lot of puzzle, adventure, fighting games where you shoot "things". For me Portal is a pure puzzle game.

That's because in Mario you rarely are using the fireballs, at least not nearly as much as you are platforming and running around. So then it would be a platform game, the game turns into a certain genre by having the majority of the game involving that thing. Portal2 has the game in first person with lots of shooting, threrego it's a FPS! amiright?

You don't shoot enemies to finish the level, you solve puzzles to finish it. That's the core of the game. In what you call action, you just have to solve the puzzle faster before the situation becomes critical.

No. It's a puzzle game. Yes, it has a first-person perspective, but the game is centered around puzzle solving.

Maybe, but the majority of the time one is sitting in a room trying to figure out the puzzles, so I wouldn't consider Portal near a action game. Even during the closest parts to action, it's more like "figure out this puzzle quick or you will die".

EDIT: the quote got screwed up...

Exactly my point, yes you shoot but that's not the main purpose of the game. The goal is to solve a puzzle. It's not the way that you solve puzzles that define it's genre.

For example in angry birds you solve a puzzle by shooting a bird. That doesn't make it a shooter.

even metroid prime should be considered a FPS more so then Portal, But it has always been known as a FPA (first person advanture)

So portal is pretty much a FPP (first person puzzle) or simply puzzle game

That's not action. Action involves combat, and GLADOS was more of a time-limited puzzle than combat. If the game was in third person, no one would call it a shooter. Darksiders has a portal gun and portal puzzles (hell, one of your weapons is even a pistol) but no one called it a third-person shooter.

It's a puzzle game, nuff said. Even calling it a first person puzzle game is pretty pointless. It's a pure %100 puzzle game and calling it an FPS is an insult to what it really is. I don't get how anyone could say it's an FPS

*NO* It is a puzzle game in the first person perspective, a hybrid if you will. First and foremost it is about puzzle solving and spatial reasoning. Just as Mirror's Edge is a platformer with strong first person shooting elements.

No it's not.

If the game is in first person and you shoot, it doesn't necessarily make it a first person shooter. Shooting could just be a small part of what makes a game. Metroid Prime, you shoot stuff. In fact you do a lot of shooting. But the entire game revolves around exploring your environment and solving puzzles. Also, you spend a third of the game in morph ball form. Shooting is just your tool to getting through the environment. We don't call Final Fantasy or Zelda hack and slashes, even though the main character uses a sword. Same rule applies to Mirrors Edge, Fallout 3 and even Portal.

No, no, a thousand times no. People seem to live with the misconception that whenever a game takes place in first person perspective, and only briefly features something that remotely looks like a gun, it has to be an FPS. How come people rarely call Grand Theft Auto a TPS?

If you didn't know yet, you heard it here first: Portal is a puzzle game, Mirror's Edge is a platformer. Saying Portal is an FPS because you shoot portals with a gun from first person perspective is like saying FIFA 11 is an RPG because it has skill progression.

If you check other websites (I really don't feel like posting them), but Mirror's Edge for example is called a "free-running FPS franchise" in interviews with EA. I don't care if it is a platformer. It can be a platformer-FPS-action game for all I care. Stop acting like a game has to fit under one genre. It's ridiculous.

I would say that it is a First Person Action Puzzle. There are other games in a first personview that are not shooters like the Elder Scrolls games which they area first person rpg. In the game you fire portals and not projectile and these portals doesn't cause any damage to a object or anything while a bullet, rocket, shells, etc do.

MP3 is more "shootery" than previous MP games though. It's not even a big deal, but because of the over saturation of shooters this gen haters call games shooters to try to degrade them.

I just have to ask, are you being serious in your sig saying NGP will be better than 3DS? I only ask this because you clearly liked the 3DS and had Oott 3ds gifs in your sig before :P.

Anyway, as said MANY times, Portal is an FPP (first Person Puzzler). It is NOT a shooter.

sorry I didn't know there was a two week old thread about the same thing I posted. But don't you love how redundant this thread got? I think in the end, it's all about what you consider a FPS to be, or to have.
