I don't get it. It's in first person perspective, and you shoot. It doesn't matter what you shoot, how accurately you must shoot, who you shoot at, the point is you shoot.

You aim, you shoot. You must shoot to win. It's not like the shooting element is a small part either.

You can almost say portal is a platformer, but in first person.

Sort of. It's an FPS-Puzzle hybrid. It's kind of like the whole Metroid Prime ordeal.

I would classify Portal as a puzzle game and not a FPS. I'm sure nobody would call Oblivion a FPS even though it can be in first-person and you can shoot (arrows).

Steam also list Luxor and Vampire the Masqurade Bloodlines as action titles as well.

I'm not sure but it must be either a Platformer or Puzzle game. Shooter hell no.

Anybody who says Portal is a shooter doesn't understand games and would be better off finding another pastime.

If you check other websites (I really don't feel like posting them), but Mirror's Edge for example is called a "free-running FPS franchise" in interviews with EA. I don't care if it is a platformer. It can be a platformer-FPS-action game for all I care. Stop acting like a game has to fit under one genre. It's ridiculous.

Weird_Jerk

I wouldn't care if EA called it a business simulator, anyone who has played it should know it's not an FPS. Publishers like to invent their own genres, and in this case they probably said that because FPS is by far the most popular genre. It's still a platformer, though.

And I never said that games couldn't incorporate elements from other genres. Yes, Mirror's Edge has FPS elements. Does that make it an FPS? No, because it is not the central focus of the gameplay. There's even an achievement for making it through the game without firing a gun.

For some reason, games get branded FPS as soon as they feature FPS elements. It makes no sense. For comparison: STALKER incorporates RPG elements, but I think anyone who calls that game an RPG would be declared clinically insane on SW.

And that's because steam for some strange reasons doesn't have a puzzle or platformer category. They say super meat boy it's a casual game lol.

It's a puzzle game from a first person perspective. You don't go around killing things in the traditional shooter sense.

Seems like a lot of people have been correcting those that include either of the Portal games as a FPS. I don't get this, I always thought "FPS" was indicating that the game was played in a first person perspective, nothing else about the game had to do with it. Just cause it says shooter in the name doesn't mean it has to be about shooting bullets into people's head. One could be shooting Portals (like Portal) or kicks (like Mirror's Edge). What do you guys think? (and yeah I know this doesn't really matter much)

paradigm68

Well FPS really does stand for First Person Shooter and most people associate the Shooter part with traditional guns and stuff so if you are using the term FPS it really does usually mean what it says on the tin.

I guess most people might call Portal a First Person Puzzle game or something like that, so maybe FPP...

Regardless I think it's not that much of a deal and most people will get what you are talking about in context if you refer to it as a FPS game.
