Considering things like the Wii's recession proofing and Modern Warfare 2 being thefastest selling piece of entertainment in history, I would say video games are a huge part of society these days
No it's still pretty much viewed by the mainstream as toys used by little kids and overweight nerds. :PSpiritOfFire117
That's how it's viewed but that's not what it is.
Although I think the Wii has lost it's casual fanbase. Maybe it's just me but every Wii owner/Wii Fit user I know doesn't even use it anymore, they're too busy with those stupid FaceBook games like FarmVille and Cafe World.
[QUOTE="SpiritOfFire117"]No it's still pretty much viewed by the mainstream as toys used by little kids and overweight nerds. :PPRT-CCMWhat about professional gaming like Halo 3 StarCraft and DOTA Even still this doesn't help. The main image still remains the same. When a nongamer thinks of "video games", they tend to think of some kid not doing his homework or some shut in. It's sad I know.
Last year when i learned my History teacher owned a Wii, and my friends English teacher owned a 360 and played Fallout 3, i decided that for many they have become mainstream (although some, like Fox news, still view them as plagues upon society, this can be attributed mostly to ignorance).
I tend to think so, or they will be, within a short time Wii has impacted the industry and the world like no other gaming console this generation, more and more games are being made every year, 2010 looks absolutely godly and MW2 sold more than any movie could ever dream of. What do you think? have video game indsutry taken the steop where Music and Movies arePRT-CCM
Halo and PS2 made games household names prolly. Maybe eaven PSone. Hell, Halo's release was like a movie debut...
I actually afraid of games becoming mainstream if they aren't already which I think is the case.sonicthemegaman
I think it has become more mainstream as in there are certain games such as Halo and Guitar Hero that are recognized by gamers and nongamers alike. At the same time, there is still a huge selection of niche games to cater to one's tastes. I'll be fine as long as it doesn't become anything that resembles the dog **** that is the current American music industry.

Exactly why I'm afraid. The music industry is pretty much pure ****. Hollywood is pretty much a joke. I swear E makes me want to scoop out my eyes. I don't want this to happen to gaming. Sadly, it already is. Games are becoming less creative. Fanboys galore are the only real fuel behind a games success. That is, a game doesn't need to be good, all it needs the right look or reputation no matter how exaggerated or wrong people's views can be. Sex and violence seemed to be in a ton of games now. G4 is a complete joke along with gaming journalism in general. It's just a huge mess that I'm afraid I can no longer stand to be apart of.[QUOTE="shoryuken_"][QUOTE="sonicthemegaman"]I actually afraid of games becoming mainstream if they aren't already which I think is the case.sonicthemegaman

Yeah, gonna have to disagree. Nothing's really changed on the creativity spectrum since the old days. Every generation has a genre that dominates it. The NES days were easily dominated by platformers. The SNES and Genesis days saw a lot more sidescrollers and RPGs. No it's still pretty much viewed by the mainstream as toys used by little kids and overweight nerds. :PSpiritOfFire117
Not even close. Many, many games are mainstream now. Guitar Hero, MW2, Halo 3, God of War, Gears of War, etc.
All of these games are very mainstream and widely accepted by many people.

God of War? I didn't realize that that game was popular outside of gamers. They've been mainstream since the PS2.
Earlier, really, if you don't take age demographics into account.

Like their insane support of the Wii. http://www.foxnews.com/search-results/m/26710526/after-the-show-show-10-4.htmhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzXLfP9udSc

This
Although this will change in maybe 10-20 years when those kids grow up. It was the same with many other things, ex: rock music was seen by the adults of that time as evil or something along those lines, the bikini was an outrage, etc. When the kids that grew up with those things became adults the general perception changed. The same will happen with video games.

This for sure, in general. But its no doubt that the Wii has pushed itself into the mainstream audience more. Something I'm sure Nintendo are very happy about.
Oh, and LBP is a big one among mainstreamers too. Anyone can play it and its very imaginative and well presented.
@nunovlopes
I disagree, rock music was a big culture shock and while there was disagreement with it, it ultimately shined loud and bright
As for bikinis, with fashion growing stronger at the time, everyone was gonna jump on the bandwagon eventually.
Gaming however, hasn't really seen the marginal audiences until the Wii (another observation, the Wii's popularity is also undoubtedly exposing the 360 and PS3, but NOT PC)
The truth is, not that much of the world are exposed to, or even mildy interested in games (plus the price as well) whereas Rock Music and bikinis is far more accessible, arguable.

Maybe, but I read somewhere that more than 80% of US kids are gamers, when they grow up gaming will surely be viewed differently.

80% is a big number...
(another observation, the Wii's popularity is also undoubtedly exposing the 360 and PS3, but NOT PC)nunovlopesI see this a lot - "You can play games on a PC?"
I'm glad people are pointing out the PS1, it made gaming far more accessible than previous systems before it. It even got my sister who never plays games in the 16 bit era into gaming with games like Spyro and such.
And no, I'm not going to show a pic of her.:P
