One of the things I've noticed is how hyped Vita is for it's graphics. Supposedly it's a PS3 in a portable form or even better. But is it really?

First of all, most of the screenshots people paste are pretty much bullshots. There's no way the actual graphics will look so sharp and jaggy-free.

Secondly, some screenshots do show how the games actually look like and they don't look nearly PS3 or 360 quality graphics on those.

Vita will use PowerVR graphics tech similar to that found in iPhones, meaning it'll in no way be a graphical monster.

Compared to 3DS, the graphics do look better, but I think people are largly over-reacting when they say it's gonna top the PS3.

It'll be PSP all over again, when people also said it's gonna top PS2 but it wasn't even quite Dreamcast quality.

Probably. I think I read somewhere that the PSV could do similar lighting and effects, but couldn't push as many polygons as the ps3.

You'd think this thing was the second coming or something.

Well, it is damn impressive for a portable console, so I'd say no - it's not overhyped. Not to say it should be hyped to the moon and back, it's just the best graphics a portable gaming console has been able to put out so far.

The are overhyped, but it is still a monster for a handheld, and it has more RAM than the ps3 so at least it won't be bottlenecked in the same way the PS3 has been

I haven't noticed anything like that. To me, it sounds great as it's just basically what a portable should be - just a portable console with good graphics. No 3DS-type "omgz 3d without glasses, encounter random strangers online and do battle while your console is in your bag" etc.. That's why I feel it may sell better in Japan at least.

Wasn't there a recent interview with a Sony rep saying that the Vita doesn't have anywhere near the power of a PS3. Either way, yes the Vita's graphics are severely overhyped.

My sentiments exactly. It's simply a very solid piece of hardware with useful features and a promising lineup of software, and people are looking forward to it. So far, the Vita seems to be delivering on what Sony said it would-- almost console-quality HD graphics on a big pretty screen with 2 analog sticks. Until it comes out there's no way to know whether or not it is overhyped, but so far it looks like a very solid handheld.

So was the 3DS, but hey both machines are full of old consoles ports at the moment and are being hyped cuz of that.:P But if we look at the broader picture, the GBA, (aka the best handheld EVA!) has a s*** ton of old console ports too... so yeah.:P

Not only I agree with this, but this generation of handheld consoles will be pretty mehh too and won't be as diverse and the previous generations. It's almost the end folks! (not that I care anymore anyways:P)

I thought DS Lite was pretty awesome and surpassed the GBA (and anyway, models before DSi can play GBA games)

Well we're in the beginning of the 3DS and Vita life cycles so we won't really see what they can do for a couple years. Look at the PSP Final Fantasy Type-O releasing on Thursday in Japan is the best looking game on the PSP yet and it's almost at the end of the line for that system.

Vita needs to fall back on "better graphics" constantly as a selling point. Overhyped, it is.

PSP sang the same song against the DS. Look how that ended.

Wait, so if I read that correctly than we should ignore any of the unique things added into a handheld system that could not be done with a console, and embrace the things similar to a console...that a console can still do much better? What features of the Vita are unique for a handheld???

Lol I remember I just can't hype it as I am one of the fools who hyped the crap out of the psp, rushed out and bought it and played about two games for it. I will not fall for the same trick again lol

I haven't heard anyway say it will top PS3. I've seen several say it is comparable to PS3, but that's not the same thing. While the tech is based on the same design as the iPhone tech, it is considerably more powerful that even the new 4S, and keep in mind very few developers even try to push iphone to it's limits as like PC it is a moving target, the same won't be the case for Vita. So, I'm just not seeing this overhype. And, btw, I've seen lots of video which is not BS, and it holds up.

the graphics for vita are considerably more powerful than the iphone...by the time the vita comes out it'll still be the most powerful handheld device on the market.

PS Vita's graphics are going to be the same to the PS3 as the PSP was to the PS2. PS Vita has more ram, just as the clock speed of the PSP was 333mhz vs 297mhz for the PS2. Basically just as the PSP never looked as good as the best looking PS2 games, it came damn close which is incredible. The PS Vita will probably perform the same during its lifespan compared with the PS3 from an overall perspective.

I could get more technical but I do not need to as all most people need to know is that just as when the PSP was released in terms of raw power and potential, there's nothing on the market that can top the PS Vita upon release, its graphics will own.

No, the graphics are not overhyped.

They are quite impressive for a handheld device.

They follow an old tradition among certain handhelds of being ~ 1 generation behind current consoles (almost). The Vita has caught a break since this generation is going to last a bit longer than most, making it seem all the more impressive as it overlaps the PS3. Though I do agree it's not quite a portable PS3/360 machine from what I've seen, but within a range that's similar to PSP to PS2 or in other words, close enough to impress me.

Much like the Game Gear, Sega Nomad, Turbo-Express, Atari Lynx, and Sony PSP, all of which were about one generation behind their respective consoles at the time of release.

Nintendo is actually a bit unusual in that they are often closer to two generations behind in graphics hardware rather than one generation, which has allowed them historically to price cheaper and attract more support. In the past it also allowed them advantages in battery life, which they've abandoned for 3D capability.

I'm not saying it's not impressive for a handheld, I'm simply saying that those statements how it'll match - or even outperform - the current home consoles (not counting the Wii) is false.

The lack of support was due to piracy though and don't forget crappy UMD. It already uses two better storage mediums compared to UMD. Now lets see how Sony attempt at fighting piracy.

I'm not very impressed so far with the graphics, especially for how good people expect it to be. However, I'm guessing it will be like most other console or portable released. The graphics and games will get better as the time goes by.

For the price, I'm going to be buying one.

Piracy was just as bad on the DS, though. I think DS did better mainly because it was cheap, had a touch screen, and lots of games. Now Vita has a better touch screen and an impressive library of its own, and Smartphones have taken over a huge chunk of the handheld market, so it's really a bit of a craps shoot about what direction the market is going to go. My money would be on Vita, since it's ben positioned pretty extensively by Sony as a pure-blooded portable gaming device, while the 3DS is somewhere in between smartphones and the Vita since it has more control options than phones, but it is still pretty limited compared to a home console controller. Both could fail, or both could sell well, but by gut says that the 3DS's approach of straddling the gap between casual mobile games and hardcore console-style games isn't going to work out in Nintendo's favor.

Nintendo fanboys bit pissed that Vita graphics look better than their 3D? :P It maybe overhyped, but it's still better than what the 3DS can offer. Vita probably won't sell as much as the 3DS as the 3DS offers more pick-up-and-play styled games than Vita, but I'll be getting a Vita just for that reason. :D I just hate those overly pick-up-and-play styled games.
