Poll Are we ready for a NEXT gen game streaming service?... Does system wars have the internet speed required. (73 votes)

15Mb or less = No last generation 19%
25Mb = No current generation 10%
50Mb = Maybe? 12%
100Mb = Probably 30%
200Mb+ = Yes 29%

With the current announcement of Googles Stadia game service/platform thing and with the rumours of Microsoft readying up something similar are we the gamer's on this forum capable of a next gen experience of game streaming?

According to Digital foundry and Google:

  • 15Mb connection = 720/60
  • 25Mb connection = 1080/60
  • 4K/60 connection = Unknown but to be safe lets assume its at LEAST 100Mb

Post up your Speedtest and then answer the poll.

I am curious because we seem to be moving there but can we actually do it and will it gives us a experience that will rival actual hardware running at 4K which is clearly dependant on the speeds of our connections. I am... BUT I am not sure if the image quality will match dedicated hardware.

Apparently my upload speed has been doubled, to "double shit" level.

This is the fastest in my area.

Honestly I think I pay for 100 MBPS but I never get it. It's always worse. I'm not OPPOSED to gaming being all streaming. Brings me back to my runescape browser days LOL- but being always online is still so problematic. I pay Comcast a lot of money for unreliable internet. Unreliable in a sense that any break in connection would stop my game... I think right now its a No for me. But I dont hate the concept

Not terribly excited about the idea of "streaming", I can't see myself committing to any streaming service as my primary gaming outlet. Unless of course it is ridiculously cheap. But if it's "rediculously cheap", I can't see them committing AAA games to it. AAA games are expensive. It just doesn't seem sustainable to me, but we shall see.

Netflix faced the same problem, and that's why they had to move mostly into original content to thrive (still not really making money, but to keep growing subs and keep the investors placatated). The model as a "licensor" of content was pretty much not working for them financially. I imagine any service that tries to live on AAA games licensed from 3rd parties will probably find that out. The money generated from subscriptions won't be enough to actually pay for the content. It could be cool for awhile though until they figure that out.

Xbox team can recycle X1X's "no compressed pixels" marketing against the competition.

I have the speed to do it, I'm just not interested in streaming.

If anything, the concept of this console is cool because it would allow you to play the system just about anywhere... but that is of course limited by the internet speeds everywhere! So it's not really doable.

I prefer the physical disc/cartridge game. These things you own physically, and play forever whenever you want. A disc/cartridge lasts many, many years.

A game streaming service would be like Netflix. Games could be taken down or added anytime. You'd own no games on the service.

I honestly don't like the idea of a game service dependent on Internet. I have high-speed Internet, and I still get a laggy connection sometimes playing online games.

If you want a current game system, I recommend the 3DS. It can play both 3DS and 2DS games, it has a huge library of games, it plays cartridges. Nintendo Switch is a great system as well, as is PS4.

I live in an apartment so wifi isn’t stable enough. I’m interested in the next gen of streaming but won’t be joining in for many years to come. Good thing I’ve got plenty of games to play and can always count on my pc to carry me forward.

If this does take off (it's by no means a surefire hit) it's probably more of a threat to the console market than the PC market, given the enthusiast nature of the PC market.

It's not the speed which bothers me, it's the reliability. My internet is reliable, but not 24/7 perfect performance guaranteed which is what gaming demands. I think game streaming is a nice concept, but they need everyone including people using some 'I don't give a f**k' isp, to be able to reliably make use of it in order for it to take off. If everyone has to spend a lot on their broadband with a good isp, then arent the costs just shifting from hardware to the subscriptions fees?

I have 100mbps up/down (could get 400mbps for just 4€ extra, but I just don't need that kind of speed).

Doubt that I will be using this service in any case.

@undefined: I am very lucky I have a fiber connection. In theory I can get 1gb/second but in reality I get around 350-400mb/sec at most. But it’s more than capable for Stadia so I am looking forward to it.

Actually I just tested my connection 512 mb/sec download 494 upload.

Is my Internet capable of it? Probably, but it doesn't matter since I'm never going to use that crap.

If the day ever comes when the only way for me to play modern games is through streaming, that's the day that I quit playing modern games and just focus on playing games on all of my retro consoles. Hopefully that won't be for a very long time.

I'm not super interested yet. (I don't like the idea of owning absolutely nothing anymore, in the sense that things can be taken away from you for dumb reasons with the flick of a switch.)

Streaming is here to stay. People can bitch about it all they want but its happening.

Streaming is here to stay, but only because it creates a means for companies to lock-in the consumer and maximize their profits, and not because it's necessarily technically viable and in the best interests of the customer.

Can I meet the requirements? Yes. Will I? F no. All that speed for only a 1TB data limit or unlimited with $30 on top. I'm not that desperate to play games. I'm good with my games locally, I love games but it's not paying the bills. If I was a game streamer, content creator, or MLG and only then would I consider this crap. Other than that, I'm not paying my ISP a crap ton of money only to get charged to pay more for my "gaming" streaming service from Google/Sony/Microsoft.
