Poll Are you a digital gamer or physical gamer? (91 votes)

100% digital!!! 42%
75% digital, 25% physical 26%
50% digital, 50% physical 12%
25% digital, 75% physical 15%
100% physical!! 4%

I tend to like physical games - Why? Resellability. There aren't many games that I replay once I'm done with them. That's because I try to play new games as much as possible. Nowadays, a lot of games drop in price pretty quickly, but not all. Switch games especially tend to keep their value. Sony first party games also keep value for at least a year. COD also keeps its value for a while. I also like to collect certain games. And in some cases, the game becomes rare and its value goes higher than cost of the game itself! So physical has its perks. But there's no denying that I also like digital. If I really like a game, eventually I'll get a digital copy. It's more convenient. There's also Streaming which is also driving digital. So all in all, I'm 50 / 50. How about you, SW?

75% digital and 25% physical if I had to choose. Most of my gaming time goes to PC.

Digital.

Think the last time I bought a physical game was BotW. Came in with my day 1 Switch, and was more about the novelty of buying a cartridge again. Before that, Bloodborne. Had been putting it off, saw it at the mall and said screw it.

Mostly about convenience, but also just like to keep gaming clutter to a minimum. Personally I get no value from owning physical games, so it's just another thing to take up space for no reason. Also like 99% of my gaming is on PC anyways.

50/50 PC digital only it's not like I have a choice anymore I like digital though. But I'm old school and still prefer physical copies if they are available on PS4 the majority of the games I own are physical.

PC got me used to being all digital and the ease of use that comes with it. When I got the Switch I went physical for a bit but ended up going digital because it made the system easier to take with me without having to worry about cartridges. And with the PS4 I jumped into the generation so late there was a ton of great deals on PSN that outside of buying Bloodborne everything else is digital.

Up until the PS4/Switch I was all physical but digital is way easier to use for the most part. Buy it, download, install, play, no having to go to the store, deal with shipping, or anything.

Was physical on consoles, but I don't know if I'm ever gonna buy another console game. I don't have a choice on PC. It's all digital only or tied to DRM anyway. Convenience my ass. Would be nice to be able to reinstall a game without worrying about where I'm gonna be with my bandwidth limit at the end of the month.

Mostly digital these days. I only buy a Switch game physical every now and then. On Xbox and PC, it's basically all digital.

Still mostly get my games on physical format whenever it’s reasonably possible. Probably like 70% physical and 30% digital these days. I don’t do it because I can resell them though as I keep everything I buy. I just very much prefer having a physical gaming collection.

I used to be very pro-physical, but as I’ve gotten older I’m all digital. It’s great to be able to change games on the fly without having to get up.

Plus with DRM and also often having to DL additional data and updates throughout the game’s lifespan, buying the physical disc is usually nothing more than for a peace of mind that really doesn’t exist. You often still must be connected to the net, and this is something I’ve resigned myself to in the modern day of gaming.

However I’ll still get physical for art books and stuff (such as Ori’s Collector’s Edition for the Switch).

I'm still majorly physical. Its the only reason why I keep supporting consoles. But more and more I've been leaning towards digital cause even I can see physical is becoming less and less relevant so I want a solid digital library for the future. I only buy digital on steep steeeeeep sales though. I never gave more than 25€ for a digital game and I dont see myself surpassing that amount anytime soon. Usualy I only buy digitaly if I can find a below 5€ deal

I barely play games anymore, so the format doesn't really matter. Some games I own physically aren't available digitally, and vice versa.

Physical used to offer the ability to play a game, whether THEY want you to or not; as long as you had working hardware. But most current games are just a download on disc anyway, so that perk has been lost. And for my tastes, most modern games aren't worth owning, so... whatever. At least with a disc I can let a friend borrow it.

I've said it many times, and it's a tiring endeavor , but I have no desire to join the Cult of Convenience. Of course I have to for PC, since physical has been sacrificed for Gabe's 400th diamond shoehorn, but it has cost me more joy than I've gained.

They both have perks, but selling your control for convenience is the province of fools... according to this bag-O-air.

All digital on my Xbox consoles since I play way more on it. Since I have so few PS4 and Switch games I do physical on those, plus they are not as strong on digital rights retention nor having consumer friendly digital environments.

Feels like I already said this before on this thread but whatever. *75% digital, 25% physical* to PC, (obviously) Sony & MS are all 75% digital. Nintendo Switch falls into 25% physical.

Last time i checked, i saw my hands optical in front of my physical body while also feeling them physical as well as feeling my physical body, so i guess i am still 100% physical.

I wonder how it feels to be 100% digital tho.

Mostly digital, and mostly through Game Pass. Nowadays I only buy physical if it's a game I really enjoyed and want to keep in my collection.

Let me put it like this: I still like owning physical copies, but if the choice is between cheap ass Gamepass or 70 dollar current gen games... I know where I'll get my games.

If the price is right I go physical, if there is no sane reason to pay absurd prices, I'll go digital.

In the last few years, it has been 75% digital, 25% physical.

I just wish that my digital purchases can be transferred to any future device (at no cost and without any hassles) and not just tied to a single one.

I'll add more to this, food for thought.

Digital on PC is Backwards Compactibility meaning it's a league ahead of any of the current-gen consoles combined. I can still play my copy of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time from 2003 on a brand new PC with or without the physical media. Folks that have been with Steam and many other storefronts still have their libraries in most cases and can come back to PC gaming to find their stuff there vs consoles without BC issues or worry of their store getting shut down in most cases; even then, PC community is excellent about archiving and sadly, Nintendo, on the other hand, doesn't give a damn about preservation.

I'm a PC gamer at heart, I still like physical stuff and hope it doesn't fade away for those who still adore them. It is rather amusing how the physical media for things like movies, TV shows, and music CDs is pretty much a dying breed. You have a very small group of die-hards that love physical media in that and some hardcore record collectors. But for the most part, that entire retail space and purchasing are gone, very few even care about acquiring it 99 times out of 100. Even places like Gamestop knows they may never survive the next-gen consoles, they even hate selling XSS & PS5 digital-only.

I'm also a movie fan, I still like to buy physical Blu-Ray movies despite I tend to stream nowadays. There are huge benefits to owning physical movies. If you've ever watched a 4k Blu-Ray in Dolby Vision, you would realize how terrible streaming quality is. Now in the future that might not be the case when streamers start increasing the bitrate to match physical media, but I think we're a long way away from that. Gemini Man, (though not the best movie) for example was the best-looking movie I've ever seen. 60fps uncompressed HDR. Your average Netflix exclusive in 4k Dolby Vision at 24fps doesn't even come close, the compression is terrible I tell ya.

What I'm saying is that physical still has its place. As long as everyone has options to choose digital or physical, there's no right or wrong answer to go either way. Whatever you desire, that's more important than someone else opinion telling you otherwise.

@davillain: Xbox has a good BC going all the way back to the original Xbox. Sony also had the best BC with the original PS3. It had the actual hardware. Had Sony not chosen such complicated hardware of the PS3, maybe we’d had a different story with the PS4. But the PS4, despite not having any BC, still sold 110+ million units. The PS5 has bc with the PS4. I still think legacy BC (i.e. PS1, Super Nintendo, etc) is still very niche. Sony and Nintendo offer those games through subscription, not sure how many people are paying the extra money for it though. Nowadays, there’s just so many games vying for our attention. I really don’t know what percentage of gamers, especially the newer generation, really care about games like Prince of Persia. Many of them weren’t even alive then haha.

Also, a lot of games have been remastered and ported over.

...on a serious note, back the days when we had those fancy kewl box-covers, i was buying them to make my proud collection keep growing, while i wasn´t pirating games.

Now that everything is digital anyway, i am mostly pirating games coz there is no point in buying digital crap, especially if i don´t even really own it all.

bc only goes so far back on pc before it becomes a lottery i.e. the odds of success are heavily stacked against you. i've got mountains of hard copies of pc games from the mid noughties and back and most are a royal pain in the arse to get working. it's rarely a painless experience

Digital for everything except Switch. Physical medium has not advanced for about 2 decades or more. If the industry moved to higher performance physical medium, the adoption rate may have been higher than it currently is at the moment. Physical has more cons than pros as far as I am concerned and the main con is the atrocious performance.

That group of "die-hards" might be bigger, if the things they wanted to buy weren't a "dying breed". But that would also require the entertainment industry to produce material that's worth owning.

I get that physical is dying (dead), but when has it ever been a good thing to take all that power from the purchaser, and give it to the producer? What will people do when they don't have the option? My assumption is that they will do what they're told... because they're too afraid to do anything else.
