I will admit I am a pretty competitive gamer. Granted I am in grad school and don't play as much as I used to, but I still play and play to win. Sometimes I have to sit back and actually remember "its just a game and its supposed to be fun." For example, games like CS:S on teh computer I can get really pissed if I don't play well. It was really bad with fight night round 3 on the 360. At one point I beat the #1 player in the country and then stopped playing after about 500 online fights. Now If I play online I can get beat by decent players where before only the greats beat me....so I STOP playing online because of it! Tonight on MK2 a few players beat me back to back and it got me all down. I realize I am a sore loser and will admit it! Anyone else "too competitive" when it comes to online gaming? For those that are competitive but keep things into perspective..what do you do to remember its just for fun? Its like if I am not winning or increasing a rank..im not happy:/

Haha I used to get very pissed off when I lost in Halo 2. Still do in any shooter game when my team cant carry there own weight. I try to realize some people dont play as much as I do in certain games.

im bad. I think I may have to stop playing online for awhlie. Its like if I am not great at every game I play then I am pissed. I'm not even exaggerating. I realize I have to pick and choose my battles. Usually the best players in any game play that game exclusively, because I consistently see their names at the top. Like some guys in fight night round 3 have over 3,000 online games. Man I am way too ADHD for this crap:)

I'm a very mellow gamer. I could lose 50 times in a row, and finally stop just out of boredom more than anything else. My friends love playing with me because of it. They always ask me how i can keep playing for so long without getting pissed, haha.

Nope. I'm a good player (usually #1-3 in scoring depending on the game) so when I lose or at the very least have a bad round I get pretty pissed off. My main game lately has been Attack and Defend on R6:Vegas, andI usually have a kills/deaths of about 20-30/5-15 (somewhere in those ranges) but because of the design of the game (one shot kills, very team based) when you get stuck on a bad team or you just have a bad round things go downhill fast and there isn't anything you can do about it. Worst though is getting stuck on a s***ty team, because you just can't win without teamwork.

Well losing is just part of the learning process. You can use losing as a tool to make yourself better. I don't mind losing, what's to be competitive about anyway? It's not like anyone will care or remember a couple hours later.

When you start winning after losing is when it starts getting fun IMHO, quiting before then is like losing and then losing even more so on top of that. Losing also makes you appreciate winning that much more, kind of puts things into perspective.

just to add to my craziness i will give an example. I didn't get in on the halo3 beta. I almost am debating not getting it because I don't want to go online and get destroyed from the tons of people that played it everyday for a month. WTF is wrong with me! How do i put this into perspective lol...and to think im in grad school. insomnia pwns.

The key in online gaming is that when u are close to losing, u unplug your internet. Otherwise you might actually lose.

There is another method though too, complain about everything that happened in a match, then afterward report the dude that beat u to a moderator for haxxing.

Hahaha I'm just not good in online gaming. My favorite thing to do is trash talk. People think I'm mad at them, then they yell at me, and I yell back, and I turn my mic off and laugh. I get such a bang out of online gamers.

Or you could just lose like any self-respected gamer should, and attempt to become a better gamer the next round...

Yeah, pretty much what you said there, is what I think about losing. I'm not too competitive on many games anyways. I actually don't mind losing to people who are better than me, because if I get close to beating them the more I play, or even am able to win once, I really feel like I've learned alot. Like a scenario today. I was playing online with a friend on Planet Puzzle League (god I wish it was just Tetris Attack... ) and little by little, we did about 10 matches, and the guy ended up winning the last two matches on me. I mean he really did get better. I also gave him some pointers on the game. :) (Like how chains are much more effective than his combo flooding.)

But that may ruin his hopes of ever having a perfect record, or ever claiming he's unbeatable. I mean, can you believe what people would think if he had ONE loss on his game?

I use this strategy, or something close sometimes. B/c I'm fairly relaxed while gaming online, I tend to get frustrated reactions from people who are really competitive. Like if I'm losing they don't get as much enjoyment b/c I'm not really reacting as they would. It's kind of psychological in many ways, I'll do what i can to push their buttons. I find a frustrated gamer will eventually lose b/c he/she isn't thinking clearly anymore.

Depends. In a RTS game, if you are in the position where you simply cannot recover, quit the game. I don't want to spend several hours hunting down buildings spread out throughout the map by workers.

Exactly, leanred that lesson back with Street Fighter II and going to the arcade with my uncle (also playing on the SNES) I used to lose so many countless times. Eventually I finally won to people (mostly my uncle) against people I used to get destroyed by, and I had earned it. I thinka big issue is gamer ego, people gotta realize that they're not the best and that there is a lot to say for a gamer that has some degree of modesty.

Oh I remeber SF II. I used to be very good, then my little brother actually got as good as me, where my fights with him no longer became a shutout. It was daunting at first, but I liked it. It made me want to become better, and I'm sure the same for him, and plus we took our skills to the local arcade and see how good we were. :P

I have to agree. I think some people just have to big an ego. I hear it all the time, whenever I play on XBL or something. People just tend to go "Oh I can do ______ and I have ________ achievements/gamerscore." Then they are losing to someone who has less gamerscore/achievements and complain.

In most RTS games the match ends when all the opponent's troop producing buildings and troops are destroyed. You usually don't have to go searching for all the houses, markets, etc.

Only in a few older RTS games do you have to literally destroy every building. The only recent one like this that comes to mind (and i mean recent as in the last 5 or so years)is WCIII, and judging from your sig, that's what you play.

Also, there's a difference between quitting and DC'ing. When a player disconnects they usually unplug their ethernet cable so they don't recieve a loss (and their opponent a win). If they just quit, they still get the loss.

In Supreme Commander, I had a negative win/loss ratio at one point, because so many of my opponents ended up DC'ing. Had all my victories actually counted, my ratio would've been around 3:2.

good responses. Seems like I definately need to just start having more fun with games. Its strange because in college I was very casual for the most part and was always considered good amongst myfriends. When I got into the real world and running my own business I didn't game for a few years. Then the past two years I got into CS:S competitively and that led to getting competitive with every game.

I know the difference but with some games, they still register a DQ as a loss.

Also, I don't really care about people DQing. They know they loss so that alone makes me happy.

LOL, I was just thinking the same thing. I love playing MP titles with my friends and watching their skills develop. It's quite interesting to me watching someone unknowingly become a better opponent until all of a sudden it's me learning how to trump their latest skills.

I only get aggravated when people rub it in my face. But for the most part I can handle losing but if it's over and over and over I will just stop playing try to get better then come back and try again. If it gets too bad i'll just stop playing the game online or all together.

I always found it tricky to get someone back, just when they learned you so well and started getting the upper hand. It's like they become more aware, and more calm now. Whereas the opposite kind of happens to me a bit. I get so anxious sometimes when the oppotunity presents itself,it becomes my downfall sometimes. :P But it's just a habit I need to break of course.

Most of the time I'm a pretty good loser. I mostly play for fun so winning and losing comes 2nd to having a good match.

Most of the time I'd rather a match be close and lose, then easily win by a blowout.

I really don't like getting stomped repeatedly, and that probably more than anything will ruin a game for me. I don't really like non-compeditive matches but most of the time I can handicap myself in a way to at least make things interesting.

If it isn't you who lost the game, there's a right to be mad.

That's why BF2 died pretty quick for me. Either I have to be the commander because everyone is a crappy commander, or I have to quit commanding because no one can take a damn flag point.

Im a total sore looser on online :P. The latest game i played online was Mario Strikers and after i beat someone who was really good in a best of 3 match i just walk around the room laughing shouting how amazing i am to all my friends in the room saying things like "That fecking looser, man he was about to tackle Birdo and that egg thing went right in the net that stupid feck ahHAHAHAHah 0_0".

Now when i do a match and i loose i stop playing the rest of the day getting in a mood and saying stuff like "CHEAP TACTICS, it has to be!!!!. He was fecking cheating :(". LOL

I'm not a sore loser, but I do question my ability sometimes when I play crap. I can usually put it down to tiredness because most of the time I hold my own. It is a very rare thing for me to be the best in the room anyway, I just occasionally get in the zone and I'm on fire, but it doesn't last long :?
