I would say I'm pretty happy, but not blown away like other years. But we're still not halfway through the year yet, so maybe something big will come up. I'm still expecting Horizon 2 for this holiday! With that said, here is what I've enjoyed so far:

  • Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury: played the original 7 years ago, but enjoyed this one more. I love that they sped up the movement, I remember that being of my complaints of the original. Overall, it was just the Mario game I needed, especially after the disappointing Mario Odyssey. This game is pure fun, and I really enjoyed Bowser's Fury as well. I hope that's a taste of things to come, for Mario.
  • Persona 5 Strikers: this game surprised me. I was never a fan of Dynasty Warrior type games, but this game is different. It's a collaboration between Atlus and Omega force. It feels like a sequel to Persona 5, like they're revisiting your favorite world and characters again. And the combat was so good, I wonder if Atlus is considering switching to action RPG for their next game (probably not lol).

Those are my 2021 games I've played, but I've also been catching up on the backlog. Started playing No More Heroes, and I love it.. for the most part. Combat is satisfying, especially the one on one encounters. I look forward to completing this game and then playing No More Heroes 2 and hopefully picking up No More Heroes 3 this year. I also played a bunch of Apex Legends for Switch this year, and yes, I enjoyed it. And of course, the usual Call of Duty fun.

As for new titles, I picked up Ys 9 and I look forward to playing it at some point. I picked up an early copy as I think it has a limited release. I'm also looking forward to Nier Replicant, Returnal, Ratchet and Clank, Resident Evil 8, The World Ends With You 2, Zelda Skyward Sword HD, and I'm sure we're for more announcements coming up soon.

Overall, 2021 is a solid 8/10 for me right now. How about you, SW?

So far it's mostly a year of backlog for me, so the annum is a bit irrelevant, but I'm loving the gaming I'm managing to squeeze in.

Trying to think what 2021 games I've played... The Medium, anything else?

Evil Genius 2 is alright, and I'm still waiting for Praey for the Gods 1.0 update. Other than that, it's been pretty much a backlog year. Completed three games already.

Can't say i've ever not enjoyed a year in gaming, its just the amount of fun that varies.

If it weren’t for family and friends, probably not. My Madden League with some buddies has been a ton of fun. My 6 year old son is getting pretty good at Fortnite and Rocket League, so playing those with him has been fun too. Then my 3 year old son has turned into a Mario fanatic. Kids can rejuvenate your interest in certain games for sure. Then there’s my 18 month old daughter. She’s real good at turning consoles off when you’re in the middle of playing something. She’s also really good at buying things on Xbox Live when the TVs turned off. 🙄

Yeah I’m really enjoying it so far myself. Had a lot of fun with Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, Capcom Arcade Stadium is a really cool collection of classic arcade games, and Monster Hunter Rise is fantastic. Really looking forward to Resident Evil Village and Mass Effect Legendary Edition next month.

Yeah gaming with the kids is fun, i game with my 8yr old son on Minecraft Dungeons and Streets of Rage 4, good times. Enjoy it while it lasts as my 16yr old son doesn't wanna play games with dad anymore, he's more into playing solo or with his friends, at least when/if the next Xbox comes out he will have a job and buy it himself.

I think that the only things i've enjoyed in 2021 are the two Doom Eternal dlc's. Literally nothing to play until RE8.

@goldenelementxl: Amateur. You have to have some sort of barrier to keep the little ones from touching the electronics.

I remember one of my kids would stretch her arms through the gate to blast my receiver volume. Super annoying!

You’ve never seen my daughter in action. They don’t make barriers secure enough to keep her from a lit up power button.

It's really dry on the new games front. Basically only play Monster Hunter Rise, and I'm pretty much done with it as I found it short and easy for a MH game.

Other than that, I got plenty older shit to play.

So yes, I enjoy gaming in 2021. But games from 2021 are lacking. I'd give the year maybe a 5-6/10 so far.

Haven't really played much this year, in the same boat currently, high priced GPU's. Had two 6900XT's and sent them back and have a 3090 HOF sitting next to me thinking the same thing.

Trying to not to feel being forced towards a PS5, so at the moment I have not been able to enjoy gaming in 2021.

So i imagine that World is much better? The few folks that i follow on twitch that played the shit outta all the other MH games have all quit Rise a week or so ago. Iceborne, an expansion, had more lasting appeal lmao.

I swear, if the next MH game launches without a proper endgame i am gonna be fucking mad. Its like Capcom doesn't get it or what is the problem.

Yeah, I'd say so. World has way more shit, even before Iceborne. Several towns, whereas Rise has 1. You can have several rooms and decorate them with lots of shit, Rise has 1 room and some lazy figurines. World has more monsters, places, ranks, achievements, quests. World has event quests, Rise don't. Rise only has 2 elder dragons, whereas one can only be battled in rampage mode, and they look the same.

The wirebugs are fun to use. Made slow weapons like Great Sword a lot more fun. Get Rise if you want to see why, or if you're starved for Monster Hunter, and want more even if it feels gimped compared to World. Skip it if you don't.

And here i was thinking that World is nowhere near close to what i want from my MH games. If Rise has significantly less of everything World has then oof. Still gonna get it on pc, tho.

But i reall hope somebody at Capcom sees the player retention being much lower in Rise and does something for their next entry. To me, it is not okay releasing a grindy game with no endgame/aspirational content.

I love CoD Cold War even though that came out in late 2020, I’m happy just playing some older games right now and waiting for the new ratchet and clank and hopefully skate 4 to come out.

@hardwenzen: We'll see after they've updated the game. Way more shit and a G-rank could make the game double as good. Game's pretty barren right now though. Rampage mode was quite dissapointing. Fun, but I imagined something cooler.

This year has started very similar to most years. I generally replay older games for the first half of the year with usually only one new game. This year it's Oddworld for the "new" game. Still in the middle of Uncharted 4. I've also been playing Dead by Daylight and Streets of Rage 4 with friends online.

My next game will be the Mass Effect trilogy. New release of older games so...

Not really sure what my next actual new game will be. I may pick up Outriders. I may get Hood but I need to research it more.

Overall good though i'm not playing any new games.

Started out with monster hunter world (leaking over from last year). played through Ys8 (very enjoyable overall). finished Baldurs gate (only took 20 years. holds up better than i thought it would) and am nearly finished the expansion i think. After that i am thinking of switching over to Stellaris. Just sit down and properly tackle that beast (it got an expansion recently too so...). then back to baldurs gate 2 before Ys9 arrives on PC (July 9th i think).

I think the game playing days are over for my PS3. I was playing through God of war 3 and was pretty meh on it. I may give persona 5 a shot again...but probably not.

I must actually just finish BOTW and retire the wiiu also. I went on a bit of a purge of the wiiu backlog last year but BOTW escaped.

All quiet on the switch front at the moment. i have a bit of a backlog on it but no real urge to play it at the moment. i'm 50:50 on buying animal crossing. Its all quiet for 2021 also at the moment (E3 will hopefully have a surprise or 2).

So no shortage of games to play.

The downside of course is the hardware situation. i want to upgrade my PC but it aint happening at the moment. I want to play VR, and my current PC will take a very decent stab at it, but when i know i am upgrading i just keep putting off using it. So i'm not really buying new games either in general (except Ys9. thats day one. a new PC wont make that any better anyway).

I was going to get a PS5 this year also but i'm not paying scalper money for it. it would be nice to raid the PS4 catalog while waiting for more PS5 games to come so it would be a busy system. but yeah it aint happening at the moment. no rush anyway. next year with GT7 is fine.

I have not been enjoying it even after getting a PS5 on release. I got the platinum trophy in Persona 5 strikers which I surprisingly liked.

I do believe 2022 will be much better. I remember when the PS4 and PS3 first released and the first year was always boring so the same thing is happening with the PS5.

I'm actually having more fun with gaming than I've ever had, I think, except maybe when I was a little kid. The reason is I got a gaming PC a while back, and suddenly my gaming library is off the charts.

As for games that actually came out in 2021....not even sure if I've played any, lol.

2021 is a continuation of new experiences in gaming. Played my first ever Tomb Raider game, Rise of the tomb raider, played Judgment and FFIX remaster. All of them have been excellent games.

Now I am playing Horizon on PS4. So far it's an interesting game. Big up Sony for the freebee.

The year 2021 is so underrated. theres never been year since 2016 which have more excellent and unique upcoming masterpieces

Hitman 3 just released and one of the best stealth game ever made. with Deathloop coming out, Village coming out, STALKER 2 coming out, Shadow warrior 3 coming out, even System shock remake finally releasing.

unless all those games get delayed to 2022. this is 2004 level of goodness.

I only played Little Nightmares 2 so far from 2021. It was fine.

I plan to play -

  • Nier Replicant
  • Resident Evil Village
  • Returnal - (if I have a PS5)
  • Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart - (if I have a PS5)
  • Horizon Forbidden West - (if it comes out and if I have a PS5)

@ghosts4ever: No one on here could name a worse list than the one you just did.

A list full of fps (first person shitness) what a terrible list.

Capcom bringing the rukus this year with Season V of SFV and Monster Hunter Rise.... the hits keep coming in May with RE8.

Also been getting back into the mod scene on a few old classics. The final cut of Disco Elysium is a nice surprise that im currently enjoying.

Then we still got Deathloop and Starfield on the horizon. Overall looking like another great year for gaming.

Im hoping Nintendo has a few surprises at E3 for the holiday season.

I'm actually having more fun with gaming than I've ever had, I think, except maybe when I was a little kid. The reason is I got a gaming PC a while back, and suddenly my gaming library is off the charts.

As for games that actually came out in 2021....not even sure if I've played any, lol.

Awesome, I remember that feeling when I first got into PC gaming especially the first few years are some of my most fondest memories in gaming. For me it was discovering MP games joining a clan and playing Medal of Honor and the Battlefield series back then the fun factor was right up there with the 90's arcade days for me.

Yeah, I'm actually glad I wasn't gaming on PC in my earlier years, because now it's like gaming is this totally new thing for me, with all these classics at my fingertips. It's such a cool feeling.

I am absolutely enjoying the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo has brought that fire this generation and they are doing an excellent job with their console. I am currently playing Bravely Default 2. This game is phenomenal. I love the fact that I can play and listen to the game all in Japanese if I want too. I love the battle system and the story is very good but what really makes the game shine is the music. I'm having a good time so far this year with gaming.

After getting my PS5 and playing almost non-stop (besides working, taking care of our pets etc) from the mid of December to the end of March '21 I've kinda ran out of games I want to spend my time with. I've been pleased with current generation so far, except the difficulty of getting the machines and parts I want has been annoying. Currently looking forward to RE8 and R&C. Waiting for more enchanced games to arrive (looking at Metro Exodus, Cyberpunk, The Witcher 3, maybe Horizon). I hope I can nab myself a Series X at some point, to play Minecraft with my GF :D :D :D

Not been playing any 2021 stuff in all honesty, been pretty happy hitting some older stuff and revisiting games like GTA online, considering the last time I played it the current gen consoles at the time were 360/PS3
