for those of you who don't know what griefing is:

"A griefer is a player in a multiplayer video game that purposely irritates and harasses other players."

more specifically: "griefers - differ from typical players in that they do not play the game in order to achieve objectives defined by the game world. Instead, they seek to harass other players, causing grief. In particular, they may use tools such as stalking, hurling insults, and exploiting unintended game mechanics. ..."

this video gives a great example of griefing in GTA 4. obstructing races, blaring the car's horn, spamming player options/kick. that's not even including the verbal harassment.

I won't lie, some of these videos of griefers are funny, but I do find it annoying. isn't that the case with anyone who doesn't experience it firsthand though?

and on the matter of GTA IV, I'm very guilty of it, it's easily one of the most exploitable games for the griefing practice. (examples listed and shown in the video.) sometimes in a GTA race 75% of the players just won't finish and they'll mess around, forcing the winners to wait to even have their points/wins recorded. and believe me.....it can take upwards of 20 minutes to get back to the lobby.

other than that, I don't have a history of griefing anyone else. I don't swear, I barely use my Mic outside of party chat. really, I never knew I was guilty of the practice until I came across these videos today.

anyhow, do you think griefing is a major problem in online gaming. what games are the worst for this...discuss.

Hell no. I have no reason too. I find it quite sad actually (the verbal part), especially when I saw a group of guys bullying some kid on MW2 (going by the squeakiness of the voices). Then again he shouldn't have even been playing.

As for GTA IV races, every race people would do that (especially GTA Race with weapons). I know it's not fair though.

yeah, a GTA IV race isn't a GTA IV race without a bus choking off a street.:P

I only grief when the person deserves it.

For instance getting killed by some random guy in RDR more then once for no reason, most times my gun won't even be drawed, I might be hunting or doing the survivalist challenges. When that happens I just invite some of my friends to the game and we spawn kill the person/s till they leave. I've done this about 5 times and it's worked every time.

Storm_Marine

you mean like stat boosters?

now that's where it might be acceptable. though, you'd be ignoring the game's objective to interfere with other people who are similarly ignoring the objective.

seeing as you brought that up, I've sort of griefed stat boosters in MW2.

No they were all stat padding. It wasn't on a official server, it was a serverhosted just for stat padding.

Actually it was in Warhawk and all the players were grouped around a flag using a glitch to score an ridiculous amount of points....I called a airstrike on them then left before they could kick me. 8) I belive Incognito fixed the glitch eventually though.

All the time in L4D and L4D2

My friend and I think it's hilarious to throw molotovs to block people's paths, or (if we can get far enough away) to start shooting them with snipers.

We don't intend on killing them, but rather to give the zombies an added advantage against our teammates.

Good times. We really don't play either game anymore, though :(

Yep. Today in a game of MW2 search, a teammate called in his care package, and went in the corner to camp and wait for it, and I blocked him in the corner with my riot shield and my friend took his care package. It was hilarious.

No. I've been gaming online since the early 90's and have never griefed anyone. It's stupid and childish.

The servers I play on won't stand for it, they'll ban your ass.

Who calls whatever this is "griefing"? I try to defibrillate only in BC2 or knife only in GTA4 and then make fun of people who are actually trying to "win" in a random match in a 2 year old game at 1 in the morning after i "win" in a funny way. It's hillarious.

Yes and no. I'm guilty of verbal and textual insults, but that's about it. I played Team Fortress 2 last night and the server rules had it so you couldn't make any sexual references or anything like that... but me and bunch of other people were making a bunch of sexual innuendos over the chat anyway and we eventually got banned... it wasn't really griefing though because almost everyone thought it was funny and was playing along. I always talk a bunch of **** when I play Dota, but people take that game so seriously that they can't realize I'm joking. And I used an aim bot in a game once - makes the game really boring, don't see why people do it.

Maybe it's just me, but i've never considered that to be griefing. I always interpreted Griefing as basically doing things you aren't supposed to do which generally irritates the other players in the name of lulz. Example; in Team Fortress 2, it is possible to jump in a manner that gets you stuck on the door at your team's spawn point, stopping anyone from leaving the spawn area. Two guys on YouTube do this at either spawn point, blocking everyone in the game into the spawn point. For a while they pretend they don't know how to get down, asking people silly questions like 'how do i jump?' and 'What's going on!?' Eventually they start asking trivia questions such as, 'who was assassinated to start world war 1?' after which they would let a player out of the spawn if you answer correctly. In other words, lulz. Annoying, sure, but i don't consider griefing in the same league as those who scream abuse or racism at people in games.

I really have never noticed or been effected by griefers, that is until I started playing CSS : Zombie Escape mod. There are maps that require the team to activate gates and such to slow down the infected, but there are many ppl who close the gates as soon as they pass just to piss ppl off. They end up getting the whole team killed because they cut off over half the team.

Griefing can be fun, to watch, and hell, those people get creative with it, so it might not be so bad to experience either. But in my experience griefing consists of nothing but teammates continually shooting you/blowing up your vehicles, which is purely annoying.

There was a guy like that in CSS. Some of it can be fun I agree. He would come up with some of the weirdest conspiracy theories. Like we all come from a long line of reptiles and such. It was pretty damn entertaining. Though like the example I posted those are not the fun grief moments.

I sometimes go out of my way to hinder people doing something cheap.
The worst was actually in a recent game. One of the most frustrating games i have ever played called APB.
I spend 10 minutes blocking the players cars from going anywhere.

Like every 5 minutes You play that game, something happens that is so annoying... I once ate a whole bag of candy in like 1 minute of APB.

Yes I am guilty of griefing. I've only really done it in Left 4 Dead or Bad Company 2 a few times. One time in Bad Company 2 I got really mad because there were about 10 snipers not doing anything about the objective. You need to plant the bomb and they all just stay on a mountain and snipe for the kills. I just went on a massive team killing spree and killed every sniper. It felt so good. :D Left 4 Dead is really bad because there are too many inexperienced players on there, so I will sometimes vow to get revenge on someone. I act like it's okay that they've friendly fired me 10 times with me asking them nicely to watch their fire. So I wait it out and when the finale comes I accidentally kill them before they get on the rescue vehicle. Take that! It's very rare that I do grief; but sometimes I just need to let out my anger. I always give people a fair chance by asking nicely and whatever.

I would never team kill unless I'm tk'ing someone who is tk'ing others. On Uncharted 2 co-op I had a player who would refuse to heal us and constantly shoot at us or toss grenades, but not do it outright. He would just shoot at us when it was hectic so we couldn't blame him. After a while I finally just killed him off and he left.

The only time I ever really grief is on BC2 when I'm dealing with snipers on the attacking team who do absolutely NOTHING to help, all they do is kill enemies who, you know, have infinitie respawns right next to the bomb sights. When that happens I pull out the tracer dart and shoot them in the head, or if I'm on hardcore I act creative with my mortar strikes.

On Red Dead: Redemption and GTA IV I am actually guilty of it, but since it happens so often I don't count it. While I actually try to care about racing in GTA race, if I'm straight up losing I just go ahead and put a bus around a corner. In free roam I'm also guilty of tossing a sticky bomb at a car full of guys and getting my posse in RDR to mess up a smaller, weaker posse while they were in a hideout.

I also do some occasional camping in FPS games, but I just can't stand being in one spot and being a jerk to people who pass, especially on no spawn modes where I just plain despise jerks with heartbeat moniters and high power shotguns.

Griefing people makes on-line games worth the $60. I do it all the time, especially in WarCraft3. I plan to do it often in StarCraft2 once it comes out too. Griefing ultimately becomes a game within the game, that ends up being way more fun than the actual game itself. I love griefing you goinks and I'm never going to stop...

yeah, I'm just going by Google: define:

I came across the use of the word griefing in this video today, the guy griefs for a living. and he does the silly questions 'how do I fire' while standing behind someone, happens in that video and another similar attack in SOCOM. there're really funny to watch, I'll admit.

but if I'm being griefed in certain games like Shadowrun, I'd be extremely pissed.

this might be the worst thing you can do.
