@dabear: You're wrong yet again. If these systems are having trouble running last gen ports, you gotta be delusional to think that they'll be doing better on "next gen" engines.
What last gen port is not running well on XSX?
Discalimer: i dont actually have them so i'm only going by what i have seen and know about them. in fact, nearly a year in, i haven't actually seen an xbox series X/S or PS5 in the wild. do they actually exist?
but anyway: assuming these theoretical consoles actually exist (i'm not convinced): yeah overall i think Sony and MS did a good job and the switch was a solid effort 4.5 ish years ago (it definitely is showing its age now though).
i mean they are no high end PC or anything but, as an overall package that needs to fit in a 500 bucks selling price, they did good. I think MS got it a bit more right in terms of the hardware package overall but the PS5 is still a very solid bit of kit.
my biggest criticism of both consoles is in how they are dealing with storage really. MS have the vita memory card setup. the internal drive is M.2 but that also seems to be locked to the console (data is encrypted in some way) so you cant take one M.2 drive from another xbox and put it in. so unnecessary waste just because the SSD craps out.
It's great that sony are using an industry standard M.2 drive to expand the storage but, like the xbox, if the internal SSD craps the bucket then the PS5 is toast.
ideally both consoles should be using off the shelf M.2 SSDs as standard for all their fast storage requirements. Sony had it right with the PS3 and 4 and how replacing a HDD was handheld. the new consoles are a bit of a regression on that front sadly.
a bit more umph in the GPU department (especially on the RT side) would also have been good. but overall MS and Sony did good.
For what Nintendo were going for with the switch, i think they also executed it well. sure i would have like to seen a few 100 more MHz on the CPU and more cuda cores on the GPU but it needed to sip power too.
they are in a bit of an awkward spot though. yeah the switch could do with an upgrade. it is definitely showing its age. but, assuming they are going to stick to the same idea for the switch 2, the Steam Deck kinda shows that the tech isnt really there yet at a price point nintendo wants it at. the horsepower jump from the Switch to the Deck is big. PS3 to PS4 (with a more beefy CPU) kinda big. but the base model goes for 420 bucks and Valve have said getting to that price point was painful. thats also with no dock. Nintendo probably want DLSS and some sort of somewhat semi respectable RT performance too (assuming they are sticking with Nvidia) and getting all that out of a portable SOC at a more pocket friendly price is probably a bit of a non runner at the moment.

What last gen port is not running well on XSX?
Lets begin with control. What's up with Low settings (or was it lower than the lowest? i don't remember). Same applies to Hitman 3.
Any more questions, dabear?

Hitman 3 runs at 4k/60fps on XSX.
I've never heard of Control before, but I did look it up. 1440p is not 4k. But, that seems like a developer issue and not a hardware issue.

No, its not dev issues. Control on pc is what many consider as the graphics king. Current gen having a hard time with it is perfectly reasonable because of that. Hitman is 4k, but have you seen the graphical settings in that game?

All you!
I still think consoles aren't leveraging some their strengths. Consoles are generally smaller, lighter and cheaper than PCs, so why isn't there more emphasis put on couch co-op and local LAN? PC LAN parties are great as well, but lugging your PC setup around is obviously less convenient than a console. And the amount of fun being left behind by not offering LAN options is mind boggling to me...plus the obvious lag benefits and freedom from not needing the internet.
How cool would it be to setup your own local seasons in said fps, where it tracks all games played, stats, etc, and also gives out in-game awards for top players, kills, flag scores, etc. Or maybe a new EDF where you run 20v20 (or more) bugs vs humans! I have long wanted to eat all my friends as a giant robot scorpion.
You'd have to carry your TV with you. This completely defeats the purpose of the consoles being light and easy to transport.
@hardwenzen: I've never even heard of that game before.
And, I just went through a half dozen lists of "best looking games of 2021", and Control wasn't on any list.
I don't understand, you have never heard of Control?????????????????? The f*ck?! The game came out in 2019. Why would it be part of a 2021 list? Ask any hermits, with RT and DLSS, its one of the, if not THE best looking title around.
@hardwenzen: Not, I've never heard of it, which is why I thought it was new.
So, you're unhappy consoles don't look as good as the highest end PC games from 2 years ago?
You should have been disappointed at every console generation, then.
My god DABEAR. You visit gaming forums and have never heard of Control? Am i talking to a soccer mom?🙃
@Juub1990: Haha, I've literally done that many times, and you're not wrong. Almost fell down my apartment stairs while holding my 27in. That would've sucked.
But on the other hand, TV's are lighter and cheaper than they've ever been. And many people own more of them than they used to. Between my roommate and I we have 8, in varying sizes. 5 of those we already had, and 3 were bought/donated for Halo CE LANs. And we have all the boxes, which are easier to setup and store versus our gaming towers. And if the games allowed for a mix of split screen and single screen, smaller TV's/monitors could be used for individuals.
It's obviously not more convenient than online gaming, but there are benefits that I believe outweigh it. I've never had an online match, of any game, that was more fun than playing LAN in a single house with all my friends. And where it's not feasible, you still have online, but not even offering local LAN is a waste opportunity for more enjoyment in this world.

Control really isn't that impressive. There are games on next gen consoles that already look far better and the devs basically said they simply didn't have time to utilize either the PS5 or XSX.

Of course its not that impressive on consoles when it has a bunch of settings set to Low and even lower than the lowest on PC. Maxed out on pc its not "not that impressive", its very impressive.

Maxed out on PC it's nowhere near the best looking game anymore. It has impressive reflections and thats it. Honestly Demon souls, Ratchet and clank and Spiderman MM look better.
The reason it sucked on consoles is they took the Raytracing built for RTX and threw it on consoles.

It also has the best physics/particles of any game. When i was the one saying that Demon's remake looks better than anything on pc, its hermits that were all spamming me saying how Control looks much better. DF were saying the same thing, and i don't think Demon's remake was even in their top 5 best looking titles of 2020.

Demon souls was 6th, Spiderman MM was 2nd behind Maxed out Cyberpunk. DF jacks off over Ray tracing and Demon souls didn't have it so thats why it didn't make the top 5. Im pretty sure Ratchet and clank will be in the top 3 this year. And none of these games scratched the surface.
Yeah we are at a point where just about ever game looks good. Yeah sure some games look better than others but most games look good over all and FPS has always been way overrated 30 or 60 I dont care has long has its a study frame rate and most games have other issues than frame rate if its something I am not going to play or something I end up not liking.

As long as I can get one before or when FM8 releases, my X1X will have to suffice.
Yes a high end PC can out perform these consoles. But most people do not have a high end PC.
Some people prefer to game on console, some on PC
If the PS5 and XSX are considered similar to the 2060 Super (as I have seen thrown around here) then that card alone costs more than the PS5 or XSX. As seen on Amazon) Even if it is not as powerful as the 2060 but lets say it falls somewhere between the 1080ti and the 2060, the 1080ti is far more expensive than the 2060.
Add all the other components in (besides monitor) and the price to build a PC that runs similarly to the consoles would be far more than the console price.
@hardwenzen: Not, I've never heard of it, which is why I thought it was new.

Sorry, it doesn't ring a bell.
@regnaston: This discussion is about graphics/performance and not cost. Everybody knows that PC component prices are whack due to chip shortages and crypto whores. It is also hard to get your hands on an MSRP console. Regardless, high end PCs are still better than consoles.
I don't know could the graphics get anymore realistic ,I'm sure their's always better hardware around the corner but what about some more ground breaking gimmicky innovations in gaming or more niche is? Hell maybe it wouldn't if more games could implement a heuristic in the method machine learning to adapt to your play style on the fly
No, I feel that consoles nowadays are always one or two steps behind PC. I wouldn't mind paying 1000 USD for a console that would get me closer to PC performance.
Still, weak hardware or not, I will stick to consoles. I want dat couch, dat big TV screen and dat convenience.
