Poll Are you ok with a future where you no longer own your games? (44 votes)

Yes 43%
No 57%

Was listening to this video and was wondering how gamers here felt about the idea of not owning games any more. Ubisoft is currently in a lawsuit over this by delisting the game The Crew. With the industry wanting to move to an all digital future and subscription services, being digital rental services similar to Netflix or HBO MAX.

Are you ok with this? Is this just the new world and we should just accept it? Or is this just corporate greed, minimizing cost for developers and giving them full control to delist whenever they want arbitrarily. Will this change your gaming habits in anyway? I am not a fan of this.

Yeah, I game mostly on PC, admittedly. But it's so nice to pull out old consoles now and again. Just a different experience overall. Modern consoles are kind of just basically a gimped PC experience, lol, in just about every way imaginable.

I was a Backer for a P.C. game called War for the Overworld; and paid for the physical edition tier.

In the end they just put a GoG download card in a box and called it a day despite originally promising a Bluray disc. To apologies they just gave us a second card. yippe

Think they kinda missed the point.

Overall I really like WftO, but the whole physical tier was a joke. Shouldn't have been offered if they could not deliver.

That is a complete joke, yeah. And totally disingenuous, borderline criminal, lol.

I feel like when this crap happens, it's the new world not trying to hold onto aspects of the old, but simply putting on a facetious show of doing as much.

Really enjoy the absurdity of console folks claiming they like physical, but every time they buy a new generation machine they lose the ability to play any game that the machine isn't backwards compatible with.

I'm sure the dozen or two of you out there with multiple machines from the last 20+ years just can't wait to go "Yeah but not me!"

Just what exactly is this absolute joke of a thread??

Well it started off with what I can assume is a very important and amazing Youtube video [that I did not watch, as per my policy]. So really what's your problem with it? 😋🤣

Not sure why they did that.

I understand they were going for a heavy nostalgia vibe ("we're Dungeon Keeper 3 but we can't use that name", essentially) and a physical edition would further capitalize on that, but at the end of the day they were a tiny independent company and probably bit off a bit more than they could chew with that promise.

Great game, though!

Yeah, the bc issue with modern consoles is freaking ridiculous. Largely negates the worth of consoles.

But having a decent PC, thousands of digital games, and a stack of older consoles with a closet full of cartridges/discs is really satisfying though, lol. Best of both worlds, as they say.

In the future I suspect many games will be connected to an AI cloud supercomputer where they simply won't work without it.

@mrbojangles25: This is why I'm respecting The Wayward Realms Kickstarter quite a lot.

They considered a physical edition, because the idea is very cool, but because distribution companies for physical can get tricky namely making those physical copies compatible with modern P.C.s which is almost entirely digital at this point, it was noted not worth Backers losing faith in the project in the off-chance they have to back-peddle from the tier entirely.

Frankly Brightrock Games should have informed Backers, they made the choice not to till the damage was already done. I'm sure they wanted to go along with giving us the discs but it got complicated and too expensive, the explanation was very much a fluff piece. That's fine but being honest is how you keep your customers happy. They decided to only make a note about it after we got our copies and we all expressed disappointment (outside the cliche dumb**** troIIs who didn't even buy the physical tier shitting on physical gaming) Regardless find it hard to believe they didn't know about it before hand. I suppose War for the Overworld is amazing today but on launch it was rough so Brightrock Games had other issues to deal with and felt the physical tier problems was far less important.

Case and point. I like a good physical, but do it right or not at all. Don't offer what you can't deliver.

I'm generally ok with how things are now regarding that. I can access the games I've bought when I want. That's the same thing as owning them, to me. I don't like when I've bought something, and a developer removes it though. Then I'd like my money back.

Like Blizzard when they removed Overwatch 1, a game I payed for and still wanted to have. Apparently, I had agreed somewhere in some contract no one reads that they can do that to me. The main reason to do that is to push me towards their more aggressive microtransactions in Overwatch 2. That is fucking disgusting and I promised myself to never buy a game from Blizzard again. What a truly shit company that is.

You gave your rights away as soon as you went digital, its self-inflicted, and Gaben sat back and didn't say a word because he got his 30% cut so he couldn't give a💩about his customers.

The thing that I find surprising is that none of you could see this coming (it's going to get worse) and some even defend digital purchases 🤦‍♂️

I don't know, gaming on PC and Steam has been fine for the decades I've been doing it, and it's still great. Some companies like Blizzard suck ass, and they're easy to avoid. Sure, it feels better to hold a game in your hands knowing no one is able to change or remove it, but digital gaming is convenient. I don't want to trade my Steam library of ~300 games for physical discs, that'd be horrible.

Correct, and convenience is another word for laziness. Like I said Gaben did nothing to protect your rights did he, and he takes 30% of the money and yet Hermits are so sucked in by him they think Steam is a good monopoly and you have those same traits when you talk about digital.

Like I said its only going to get worse in the future.

What does owning even mean?? Some people are really emotional about this topic. Personally I prefer digital, it just feels better than having a bunch of boxes everywhere.

@blaznwiipspman1: I think it’s because of the superiority of the moment.

Say I own Perfect Dark for N64. Then I can proclaim that I have the highest rated FPS game of all time. So when someone says, for example, that they own borderlands 2, you can win at the debate table. Pretty smart strategy, actually.

I don't often give modern games second chances and am less inclined to revisit beaten ones because it takes too long to download them again. Also too massive to back up. Streaming and downloading everything (each time) is stupid. It's a drawback of PCs. Could have packaged the Blu-ray games in CD jewel cases for maximum shelf space. Far cheaper to replace than the dumb, oversized movie cases that the big three stupidly adopted. Even Switch boxes are much too big for the media they contain.

Funny hearing the environmental argument against physical media from people who won't talk about the cost of servers.

@outworld222: its true, n64 perfect dark is a collectors item nowadays. Thankfully we're moving away from that nonsense into a digital age. Actually scratch that...People are dumb enough to trade for digital currency and spend tens of thousands of dollars on NFTs. Literally a bunch of dumb monkeys.

Not to be a downer but you're all gonna die.... All the games you'll ever want to play will be available until then. Play them however you'd like, just please don't say "ownership" matters with the reaper looming.

I’m gonna be cryogenically frozen with all my physical games and hardware. That’s the best way to outlast the life of the IP creator + 70 years. Then the games are actually mine!

There‘a always a way around the law. You just gotta get a little creative is all.

@ghostofgolden: A century from now, all the games we now play will enter the public domain and will no longer be owned by any person or company. However, will gamers a century from now will remember the games we play today or only those that stand the test of time?

Anyway, when we die, we cannot bring the games we own in life to the afterlife. They remain in the world of the living.

Future? My Steam account is over 20 years old.

And that's not even getting into the mechanics of how copyright laws work.

@onesiphorus: Have you seen the movie Demolition Man? My body is being frozen while I’m still alive and being thawed in the future. I’m coming back in 2225 when Sonic CD has its own book in the Bible and GTA 7 is about to launch. We’ll still be waiting on Game Pass to catch on, but Lems will still be hopeful, focused on the potential… Halo Infinite ODST 7 Wars launched on PlayStation 101 first as a Doritos Plus exclusive, but Xbox is porting it to their own console as a last ditch effort to finish the generation in 8th place, behind Nintendo, Sony, McDonalds, Trojan, Pepsi, ESPN, and Pornhub. 🤞🏾

I've honestly been gaming since the late 80's and I'm not too concerned about it. I have yet to have any purchased Digital game vanish from my account. But when it comes to ownership digital video games are the least of my concern in a world where Eminent Domain laws exist.

It's at the point where you really just have to consider what your personal values are.

There's no denying that digital downloads and subscriptions are easier and more convenient.

BUT you don't own it. So you can't share it, re-sell it, or preserve it. There's a lot of licensed games, like James Bond for example, that WILL NEVER be re-released digitally or be apart of a subscription service. So without some way to own that game.......it can be incredibly difficult to find ways to play games like that.

I prefer to own games....especially since as I get older I tend to go back and play older games, so it's nice being able to pull out a cart or disc and just play (and now companies release new hardware for retro consoles!)

As the cards are dealt and the tension rises, you can almost feel the pulse of the room—the thrill of anticipation hanging in the air, where each bet is a leap of faith. It's not just about the chips stacked on the table; With every hand you can alot of money . https://juwa777pro.com/

You guys know you die at some point?...

Not owning games is the least of my worries.

As for replaying old games?... Honestly never do it. In fact I have a back log of games on steam that I couldn't care less about.

Also the one guy I know who has one of those gaming rooms full of games, he doesn't even play them... He's playing Schedule 1 right now and POE2 and before that Zelda Tears of the kingdom, I have never seen him playing anything but what is out now.

Not owning games, you know almost everyone sells all there old games and consoles for the new one right?... We are not all hoarders.

Even though I am kind of indifferent about digital or physical, there is something really sublime about actually owning your games, whether you showcase them on a bookshelf, share them with friends, or just collect and play them in general.

I guess standards were just higher back in the old days.

@Grey_Eyed_Elf: So because you die you shouldn't own anything? You can't pass them down to your children etc.

When you die do you have your house demolished along with your car, clothes etc.

Kinda dumb way of looking at it.

It's sad that some of the people in here won't ever have kids and experience what it's like to hand down items to them later in life. Their 💩 will end up in a skip bin taken to the tip, crushed and buried, such a sad life 😥
