I will be ready for it when the console makers show some brain cells at work. And they have A LOT to prove to me.
When the systems are natively backwards compatible with the games library you own, I will go full digital, which is why it works on PC.
I will not want to see me have rebuy a game which is already on my PS, Xbox or Ninty account. It should simply be able to redownload and play, patched to have settings on what the console it is downloaded to can play it as.
It is not that hard, PC games have been able to do it since, well around 2004.
I do NOT want to lose my digital games every time a new console comes out. But that said I think that might be part of the reason why they decided to make the systems as they did, they might be working on that exact thing. If they are? then sure I will go digital only with no issues, but so far the console manufactors have been lacking to put it mildly.
If they try to sell me remasters upon remasters again, I will laugh and get rid of the thing.
But IF they make an infrastructure which work like it does on the PC, where you can simply install any game (down to the console it was originally made for, to ensure that it runs well). I have nothing against going DD.
But as I said they will have to prove that they can, and will do this.
No.
I like being able to borrow, lend, and sell games.
I can play physical copies virtually forever. If Nintendo goes tits up tomorrow I can still play all my games. If Valve goes under or Steam is taken down I'll be free floating up shit creek.
I realize that I will eventually have to concede these benefits but I won't pay $60 for a digital game. I would pay no more than $30 and expect at least as much content as I currently enjoy with physical games.
With the lack of backward compatibility support for the current PlayStation console, I could understand why would most of their users will be very hesitant and weary with going all digital. With this fact, I'll probably go mostly digital with every current gaming system except a PlayStation unless Sony finally embrace the standard of backward compatibility support and adds external hard drive support for games.
Is the next gen gonna mark the end of physical discs and the triumph of digital delivery, just like on Pc?
I sure hope not, as I'm a collector.

As long as game developers/publishers are ready to cut their game prices in 1/2. Sure I'm ready. I'll never pay $60 for a digital game. They can get lost with that BS. The most I've ever spent was $30. If they don't want to do that, they need to stick with physical disks.
No, I buy physical unless the only other option is digital I don't want to buy a game twice if I have two of the same console
Just want to throw this out there for you collectors. Where do you keep your music?
I had hundreds of cds and putting them all in a digital format was a godsend. Could never find what I wanted when I wanted it. And so much less clutter now.
For consoles: No.
For PC: For the most part that choice was made for me so yeah. (doesn't hurt that PC-based digital distribution stores have, on average, much better sale promos than PSN's and XBL's marketplaces)
I haven't bought a game retail since Metro: Last Light back in 2013. So..... Yeah. I've gone Digital. I used to be a big proponent of retail/physical disc. Not anymore.
Not until it's cheaper, steam's competitive pricing at launch and sales make it worthwhile on PC but there's no way i'm paying £45 digitally on the consoles for games i can buy off amazon for £35 and trade in for £25 if i finish it within a fortnight. Trade ins alone help me play a third more games.
