Are you still interested in survival games (DayZ, H1Z1, etc)?

Are people still excited for survival games? for a while they were big doings with the likes of the DayZ mod becoming a stand alone game and the similar looking H1Z1. This was followed by a wealth of variants on the theme like Rust and Ark survival. But it seems now that many of these have been in Early Access for ages and aren't overly discussed besides to criticize their development track.

So are you still waiting for final releases, or have you been satisfied with playing in early access? Or has it just been worn out due to the flood of similar titles?

I was heavily vested into the DayZ mod, however the retail "Early Access" game and its development has been less than stellar so my interest has waned completely.

It's a great concept, but the execution of the genre has been extremely rocky and rattled my faith in developer ability to do it correctly.

Does Microsoft own the rights to the original game? Curious if Capcom is ever going to bring it to PC, a lot of people would no doubt buy that, it was the best game in the franchise.

Hardly.

The whole early-access, survival, crafting thing is so off-putting.

I was never into survival games. Only one I even played was Minecraft, if you can even call that a survival game, and I only did because I liked building stuff in a hostile open world, not the actual survival elements like food management. It's never been my thing.

On top of that, the genre is completely full of eternal-alpha garbage. Some exceptions, sure, and I have nothing against early-access, but it's pretty clear most of these titles have terrible budgets from hack developers scraping at the bottom of the fad barrel. They will never be anywhere near anything that can be called complete, so I have no interest in buying into them.

They don't, MS just funds it a lot.

Of the games I have played, they have been poorly made. Any good will towards the genre has gone out the window and is now generally viewed as "have a go" cash grabs in which young kids on steam blow money.

@lostrib: I like the concept but I haven't found a game that executes well. The Forest is kinda cook, DayZ is never leaving beta, have no interest in Rust and Ark looks ok if you have a group of friends. I think I prefer games that incorporate lighter elements from those games like State of Decay.

I never played State of Decay back on the Xbox 360 so I got it when the enhanced edition with two DLC expansions released on the Xbox One last year, the State of Decay: Year One Survival Edition. I enjoyed it a great deal.

Survival games died before even one made it out of early access, lol !

No, Don't Starve was a really fun, and complete game for a change, I really like that game. But boy did this genre get oversaturated in no time.

Majority of them are early-access so what made the games possible to be made (backer donations) are also killing off interests.

The few ones that are done or at least feature-rich are very very fun to play though.

The DayZ mod was pretty good and unique and I got a lot of enjoyment out of it,but I have no interest in the commercial version or any game of that type anymore, especially if they are in early acess(aka pretty much all of them),wich is a type of business model that I never gave or will give any money to.

It comes and goes. I'll say this for H1Z1. Me and a friend (only do this with friends probably miserable solo) bought this randomly one night on steam about a week after EA release. It cost 19.99. We ended up playing it for around 100 hours or so. So we definitely got our money worth. People loved to trash it but after a few week it got nothing but positive reviews.

What made us stick around? A group of players had our server on patrol. Me and my friend called them the "King Pins". They had like 3 vehicles, 5 players and almost all of the guns on the server. At least 2-3 WERE always on. They were holed up in a house they had barricaded on the far North West corner of the map. It was like a rich house in the woods. Me and my friend (plus one guy we discovered) spent the next 3 IRL days scouting the surrounding woods till we found a sweet place to build a base. I mean we were technically in the enemies back yard and they didn't even know it. Few days later we found 2 guns and crafted a ton of arrows. We crawled all the way to the mansion at midnight. They had 2 players on lookout. Long story short we finally killed them and took the house. We busted all the barricades down and got our own vehicles and took most of the guns. WE left.

So things like that make the game fun.

I bought Day Z, I was asking myself how anyone could play that piece of sh*t.

Rust was good for a while until they changed to the horrible Unity engine.

They left a bitter taste. So no for me

Experiences like this is why I like the genre. I've been in similar situations, where you are up against a group of survivors that are hording the loot and the only option is to take them out of the game. This makes me want to boot up H1Z1 and check it out again.

I think I would be if a polished, finished game was released without microtransactions. So far, the formula has not been done well yet in my opinion, Dayz Origins is probably still the best Dayz variant and its a Arma 2 mod with half-broken zombies. Arma 3 Breaking Point is also pretty good and has (relatively) well implemented zombies but its a bit shallow compared to Origins.

Still, I think the novelty of the idea is pretty much gone at this point.

I am quite burned out on the survival genre TBH although I do enjoy DayZ from time to time as it is still quite unique in the way it plays and how it portrays the post-apocalyptic setting.

Does OG Minecraft count? because that's the only legit survival/crafting phenomenon that I have enjoyed. Partly because it's also a platform to do other things within the game/servers.

If you're talking about the pseudo PVP survival FPS stuff with environmental hazards/enemies? No, not at all. I quite loathe them even though some of their mechanics interest me. It's the communities that these games generate that I dislike above anything else, even over the business model. It's either made up of what's left of the insular MMO communities the bandwagoning around every multiplayer Early Access game because they have nothing else to play, or it's ripe with an army of Twitch meme spammers, or filled with try-hard Youtube personality parrots.

I do think Rust actually looks cool. But I heard for it to be really rewarding, it's quite involving, requires alot of patience and is rather time consuming/demanding to get things done in that game.

But 'survival games' in general? For all its issues and jankiness, I liked State of Decay, which is the closest thing to those that I played even if it is single player. But I generally prefer other survival games. This War of Mine was excellent, probably one of my all time favourite survival games. I liked Dont Starve and I've been playing abit of Crashlands on my phone.

Yeah. My friends and I have been playing DayZ Standalone since it came out (I got 900 hours on it), and it's constantly been a really enjoyable experience. And it's very different from all the other survival zombie games. Everyone seems to believe that it's not getting updates, or that nothing has been added except hats but that is absolutely not true. The game has been getting a lot of features and content, and there's a major update coming at the end of this month.
We also got into ARK recently and it's pretty fun so far.

I put, roughly, 600 hours into DayZ mod. And according to steam, a little bit over 500 into Standalone. After so many hours, and so much waiting for progress in the development process, I got burnt out. It does not help that Rocket jumped ship. If you followed development, you could clearly see that he knew about the game engine disaster that was about to go public.
