Just wondering... it seems like very time I try to introduce a friend or two to games like Quake Live and Fortress Forever, which are both free to play, they give up after a few days and say it's way too hard and they'll never get good at them, etc.

Then they go back to BF3 and COD. :( I'm not sure whether it's the small player bases (unlikely) or the high skill ceiling and high barrier to entry that puts them off.

How about you? Do you enjoy practicing and getting really good at these types of games? Or are you more of a hop-in-and-have-some-fun-occasionally person?

But I've grown tired of MP.

I have a nack at being good at MP games even when I just start playing, so I don't know. (Company of Heroes and Dawn of War excluded)

On the consoles? I can't, I get bored too fast.

Depends if the game is fun or not.

If Ubisoft came out and said Assassins Creed 3 is going to be one of the hardest games on PS3, i would figure it out because i love Assassins Creed.

Maybe there just not there type of game as I'm more intrested in trying cod or bf3 than I would be those. It is fun improving in games right now I'm still trying to get my ninja skills back in gaiden but soon I will start to co-op more in unit 13 to get ready for resistance in a month

Not anymore. I've become very tired of multiplayer games, especially FPSs. I'd rather spend a hundreds of hours playing various singleplayer games than getting to a professional level at a game. If I'm going to play multiplayer, I want it to be like Battlefield where you need no practice outside of playing some FPSs to do well.

Not only do I not have enough time to invest into becoming good at such games, I find myself playing multiplayer games less and less.

The original Gears had a fairly hardcore online community back in the day and I got quite good at that game. I've probably never been better at a competitive online game.

A decade ago I spent a year honing my Quake skills. I got so good that I went 113 matches in a row in 1st place. Recently I've been devoted to Gears 3. Its taken me about 6 months to get to where I am now, which is where I very rarely lose a 1 on 1 fight.

I've had my fill of multiplayer in Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, GLQuake, Quake 2, and Unreal Tournament when those games were at the peak of their popularity. Nowadays, I prefer singleplayer. Also, if I ever resume multiplayer, it'll be via LAN only.

God, no. I hate how MP games become the domain of obsessives. It removes the fun for friendless people like me who can only play with randoms.

CaptainAhab13

I guess the answer is no. I used to, but I eventually found a career that my hand-eye co-ordination could serve well. It has more depth than any game and is much more satisfying. It's not as much fun, so when I play any game it's basically just for fun and I don't practice for any games.

No. First, a game has to be good to bother with playing. That removes about 99.9% of all MP games available.

Then, the game has to run well online. Remove 99.9% of the remainding online games.

Then, the game still has be the type I enjoy. Remove the rest.

dedicate myself to up-skilling for a game?

Fuuck to the no.

I prefer to put that level of effort into being good at real world, tangible stuff. Gaming is something I end up doing when I'm feeling altogether more lethargic. It's just a bit of fun, escapism, entertainment to me. Nothing more.

I'm dedicated to getting good at Counter Strike Source. I'm 100 hours in and I really suck (0.67 kdr)

But it's mostly because everyone else has 1000 hours so I can't really learn when the first thing that happens when I peak out a door is get awped. Hopefully GO will even the playing field

I'm not completely opposed to it but I play so many different games that it's hard to devote an exceptional amount of time to a particular game. I am fairly good at games in general if they are genres that I play often

Back in my teens and early 20's... I used to care. But as you get older life becomes slower and you don't have the drive to do meaningless things any more. I mean really. Who is gonna care about all your WOW achivements after the last server is brought offline? Or leader boards of a dead game? It's as they say in terminator "in 100 years, who's gonna care?".

I essentially did that with a few random console games (having a few spurts in Gears 3 atm). I'm more interested being a "good sport" than a skilled player though, especially rings true for SWTOR.

On the PC? Yes.

On the consoles? I can't, I get bored too fast.

tjricardo089

this...as good as i am at shooters on pc...i try to pick up a console one...i get frustrated cause of the controller or just get bored cause its so simple/slow in comparison

^^mind you theres nothing wrong with a slow shooter...but not an arcade shooter that is slow(read halo and killzone)

but OT...i cant force myself to dedicate my time to gettin extremely competitive at video games...while im good at shooters(ive been playing them since theyve existed and got in on quake and unreal when fps mp was NEW)...i work with guns everyday(mp in the army)...why would i spend the time learning the ins and outs of shooting fake guns when i could spend the time trying to figure out how to shoot better in real life...you know...when it could keep me alive

To many youtube videos out there showing kids smashing their PC's because they got owned. If anything competative stats driven games make people into monsters when gaming.

Im at a point in CS where my skill only degrades if i dont play for weeks. I don't have to dedicate a ton of time to be a relatively good player. I've played it since beta 6.5. Waiting for csgo now.

I've often faced this dilemma when trying to decided if I'm spending to much time on any one game. I always come to the same conclusion. For example; playing the guitar (as I do) is somewhat productive as twenty years from now we'll still probably be playing the same guitars. Those who practiced for days, weeks and in some cases years to get unbelievably good at Guitar Hero, probably don't have as much to show for that investment of their time. Same problem with most games. No matter how popular they are, you only have about a six month - one year window and then it fades.

In 2009/2010 I was said to be one of, if not, the greatest Pro Evolution Soccer players in the world by the PES community which consisted of both amateurs and professionals of the game alike and not only did I turn pro at the game I became probably the best at it but damn did I invest a lot of time getting there.

This video is considered the best 2009 video on the internet and all the goals were scored by myself against the highest CPU difficulty all with default, stock settings:

PES 2009 Ultimate Goals

I also in that time set the world record in Road Rage mode on Burnout Paradise which still hasn't been broken:

Burnout Paradise World Record

To those who say "nah I'd rather do stuff in the real world"...wtf logic is that? That's like watching someone playing football, they score a great goal and then some troll goes "yeah that was good but then again, that's all he does, he just practices football all day long"...well, duh.

Until you're the best/extremely good at something that MILLIONS of other people have played then you don't have a clue. Those two games above that I listed have sold a combined minimum of 8 million copies and to be considered the best at them and with proof is something I'm proud of. Whether or not it is in video-game format it does not matter.

Right now though? Hell no! I just don't have the amount of time any more plus I have no desire. Once you've mastered something to death and have no competition then you just get bored...

I used to be. I dedicated a lot of my time mastering 2 characters on Tekken 6 and playing competitively. But I cant be like that anymore. Crazy work schedule kept me out of the local tournament scene. Besides, there are many great games out there that gives me great single player experience. I cant just dedicate my time and effort to play just one game and be competitive on it.

I don't care. I mean, I like to be good at what i play but people will claim anything is a game for noobs. No point in arguing over if it require a high level of skill. But I'm not that competitive. I don;t care if I;m the best and I don;t even play any particular multiplayer game often enough right now to get too good at it.

yep. I played team fortress classic competitively for 7 years and I'm still learning how to get better (while having fun of course). I play that, quake, and starcraft 2 for fun now, mainly because I focus all my time into playing bullet hell shmups competitively. for example, I've been working on making my way to the top 5 in Akai Katana as type 2, but it's getting extremely hard

typically I only put in a half an hour a day before I go to sleep.

It depends on the game.

MP? Probably not. I have gorwn tired of MP and I'm just done, especially with shooters.

Other games? Perhaps.

Yes, in 1998 I entered my first competitive tournament ever for Vampire Savior 3. The Dark Stalkers series got me into fighting games and I heavily played them back then, later I played competitive SF, both Alpha and with the VS series. I stopped playing in the fighting competitive scene in 06.

The most serious and best I have done was in SSBM. I was a peach user and qualified top for many a tournaments. Even played Ken, and Husband, and other top players numerous times. Ahh those were the days.

a few years ago i played competitively, but quit after 2 years since it's full of nothing but tryhards who dont communicate. so i ruin servers now.
