As a media device, the PS3 is better than the 360.

I have an arguement, having your PC hooked up to your TV is annoying. It's not exactly comfortable using a mouse and keyboard from your couch. I've done it and it's not fun. A mouse is meant to be on a flat surface. Sure you can build a mini desk or by some kind of Wiimote type mouse now all of a sudden you're spending time and money to get your PC to do what your $300 PS3 does right out the box.

So long as you're making a HTPC, and buy an actual HTPC case, there are many workarounds. You can even buy HTPC cases with detachable touchscreen controls, but they're around $500 alone for the case.

Still, the options are pretty varied!

And if you have a strict $300 budget, the PC simply has no case. It may be possible to build A PC for $300 with lots of older and recycled parts, but one that's BluRay capable and able to play back high-spec VC-1 or H.264 video? No way.

The Wireless N card or adapter allows a user to stream data up to 300mbps and this allows for streaming of HD material, good luck streaming a 1080p file on the 54g of the PS3. Video streaming is surely the main reason for being a media device. Though I think PS3 will now get a new lease of life due to the home brew apps that will eventually get developed for it.

Completely agree. I wasn't arguing that the PC is a viable home-theatre system on a small-budget, just that it is possible to have a variety of options with regards to a HTPC. Either way, this is a strictly PS3 vs 360 thread, but I just wanted to throw my 2 cents in :P

If I were building a PC with the idea of using it as the centre of my home-theatre, there is no way i'd limit the budget to $300... Ever.

It is. Thats why i prefer to watch movies and listen to music on the PS3, but play games on the 360.

agree with the TC. i own BOTH 360 and PS3. and as a pure Multi Media device the PS3 is a notch above the 360. it just is. it plays back dvd video better, it has a web browser ( although its archaic, im talkink AOL, 56K Archaic ) and it plays back your jpeg images better.

but 360 does several things Better than PS3. for one it has last fm, a better WIFI connect and xbox live, and the 360 RECOGNIZES the I-Phone and reads stuff off your removable HD faster than PS3.

both consoles have thier strengths and weaknesses.

As far as 360 vs PS3 for media, it's PS3 hands down. It pretty much does everything that 360 does except more and better. All it's missing is some type of subtitle support for non AVCHD content. PC is better than both though. Your standard PC can play play every format except for blu-ray and supports 100% of streaming sites and digital distribution of content, legal or otherwise.

I disagree with this. I have an optical mouse and it works better when I use it on my pants or couch than it does on most flat surfaces.

The PS3 has an N adapter of its own.

According to Sony its only 54g (802.11G) http://us.playstation.com/ps3/techspecs/320gb.html I know my 80GB model is 54g as I cant stream 720p movies without dropping frames or sound drop outs. Unless there is a 3rd party ethernet bridge or access point available.
