"In 1977, Atari converted a television set, for good or bad, into a toy. While it wasn't the first home video game system, it popularized the fledging electronic games genre with its bright colors, catchy music and pop-in cartridge versions of arcade favorites such as Pac-Man, Frogger and Space Invaders.

"It may look primitive compared to the advanced video game systems available today, but it helped make these possible," said the museum's curator, Patricia Hogan."

Seriously, all modern consoles need to be available in faux woodgrain. It rocks.

I was 5 when my parents got the 2600. We had soooo many games. I miss it. The nostagia, not the games, mind you. 2600 games are fun for like 30 seconds today. I dont play them because it kinda steals those memories of it awesomeness a little.

I accept my present just fine, thanks. Each generation of consoles is as important as the one before it. No exceptions. If the 2600 wasnt insanely popular, videogaming then would be dominated perhaps by the TI-99. Remember that?

The 2600was the firswt gaming console with swappable carts the plugged into your TV. Yeah. I would call that important.

I miss the days when video games where just that video games and please if any of you out there know how to beat the game "Riddle of the Sphinx", i think that was the name of it, on Atari 2600 please let me know, that was the first game that made me break my controller!!!

You know as I think about it. I never had to really blow into Atari games as much as I had to into Nintendo games.

Lets also not forget the disaster this system caused thanks to this game.

ET

Then this next gen update that followed that flopped.

Atari 5200

5200

Led to a sharp decline in video games in 1983, the market crashed. Atari lossed what would amount up to a billion dollars today.
