Am no PC or Tech freak so i don't know much about game Hardwares.
From little i know:
NVIDIA GPU served the original XBOX well but it was not well utilized & was unsuccessfully compared to the PS2.
ATI GPU was introduced to the XBOX 360 because of the unsuccessful NVIDIA(not realy sure why).ATI has done a realy nice job for the XBOX 360 providing the console with the most unique GPU features out of all the current consoles. Since Microsoft didn't own full right to the NVIDIA gpu so a hardware EMULATOR for the original XBOX was not implemented on the XBOX 360 instead a software EMULATOR was implemented by the help of the ATI gpu.

ATI seems to have benefited the XBOX 360 very well but currently both
NVIDIA & ATI seems to released various powerful GPU series for the PC & there are still future GPUs series in development within the 2 companies.

So between NVIDIA & ATI which and why do you think microsoft will go for.
YOUR REASON.

Seems like this doesn't belong in the system wars but 360 forums.

But ATI FTW!

ATI is usually cheaper whoever gets their console going first will likely go with ATI

Nvidia will back the other one

but the GPU maker won't determine the power, but I'd love to see a console with Fermi

Ironically, ATI cards are known for running safe at high temperatures, yet the 360 had such a high failure rate.

ATI if AMD made any money from the chip they sold last time... if AMD did not make enough money from the deal then AMD will try to sell them a combo AMD CPU with an ATI GPU.

Don't forget Intel, or Microsoft could make their own GPU with a small company that way they could come out with their own Zune, Zune pad... GPU chips.

Exactly. :P If the Xbox 360 was equipped with an Nvidia card...

the design flaw was mainly with materials that were standard at the time, mounting it to a board the connections had to be kept at a particular performance ratios, so just changing the material to one that doesn't warp as quickly wasn't possible. I believe ATI and Nvidia suffered the same kind of problems but since the cards weren't confined to such strict performance needs they could change it easily and not worry.

MS had a terrible experience with Intel and Nvidia with the original Xbox so AMD/ATI win by default. and anyway, early rumors state that AMD won the contract to make the GPU for the NEXTbox.

Depends on the card model. Nvidia are back on top with the GTX480 I believe, but ATI have their 6xxx series cooking.

the fermi is a little overboard tbh, some of the things on board are entirely desktop oriented, i think the evergreen would do better

fermi was designed for gamers that take part in CUDA operations (folding@home, SETI@home, etc.). that's why it's the only video card designed with ECC memory. unfortunately, the design was too ambitious and NVidia fell behind. the GTX480 and below came to market below the original specs that nvidia wanted with a TDP much higher than expected. the TDP is the biggest reason an actual fermi chip will not show up in any console next gen. there may be a derivation based on a lower speced chip (the 460 for instance) but the 470 and 480 are too inefficient in power management and thermal dissipation.

edit:

if i'm not mistaken, i think sony will be going with a powervr chip in the ps4 and nintendo "may" continue with AMD next gen.

oooh if i was MS and i was making that decision today.....tough. on the one hand nvidia have better GPGPU and GPU physics which could mean that i could get a cheaper CPU and still get better performance. provide all the needed apis to the devs (some of which already have experience with GPU physics..so they could hit the ground running) and let em at it. on the other hand fermi runs very very hot and loud...and its expensive. if i could get something like a 460 maybe for reasonable money (remember i, as MS, would never pay a retail price :) ) then its very tempting. on the other hand theres ati. i (as MS remember) have been working with ati for a long time now so we have an....understanding. the 6000 series (im MS...i can have the 6000 series now :P) will also probably be pretty awesome DX11 GPUs as they are second gen DX11. ati cards can also do GPGPU and with the DX11 compute shader it would probably be entirely possible to do physics and other stuff on an ATI chip. but its not well tested at the mo and i would need to put the work in to make it as easy as possible for GPU physics for the devs. however ati chips run cooler and quieter and the basic design harks back to the 360.....so its very tried and tested and it works...also somethign to consider. in the end id probably dial ATI simply because i can technically do everythign on an ATI card that is possible on an nvidia card, there cheaper, they run cooler and ATI and i have an understanding. but its close....both have really nice hardware.

After the job nVidia pulled with the GPUs for the original Xbox, I doubt Microsoft will ever rely on them as a chip designer/supplier again.

No idea. We still at the infancy of dx11 which would probably be the cards of choice. Right now Nvidia has the brute force method of graphical quality (outside the gtx 460) while ATI has some very nice cards. Almost all of them though are very poor dx11 cards. With the next iterations from both companies, we will see who has the best chance to go in a console. Who knows, might have some random intel graphics chip in the consoles by then. Intel has really improved on there integrated technology so wouldn't be a huge step to create some randy awesome duel base integrated chip.

Unless I'm mistaken, (and potentially thinking of Intel) I have the feeling that MS said they'd never have another contract with NVidia due to some issues they had with the original XBox

pretty sure Nvidia screwed up last generation. costing both companies money loss.

they've had more luck with ATI/AMD with the 360. they're probably locked in by now.

which is a good choice, ATI seems like the better 'character' these days.

ATI built the graphic chip for the GAME CUBEs GPU so does anyone think they were successful or not with the console. Personaly i think the GAME CUBE has more power then the PS2 but it was not well utilized & was also affected by the lack of DVD storage media.

No, not really? Maybe for the 8000 series yea, but after that Nvidia hasn't really been doing much. Fermi wasn't as great as it was supposed to be. Btw, MS and Nvidia had a fallout, so I doubt it would be Nvidia.
