That is a really ridiculous argument. When consoles go from one generation to the next, the newest generation is essentially stronger than every previous generation combined. The gamecube was essentially (give or take a few bits) more powerful than every previous Nintendo console combined. It's a ridiculous argument especially since PC components are already far more powerful than console components.

I'm skeptical. For openers, I've always got errors whenever I play low-end graphic requirement games such as The Sims 1 or 2 and the new Spore Creature Creator. The Sims is one of the biggest selling game franchises in the world & you would think that ATI would want their games to work with it. Likewise, I've always heard WoW having problems with ATI cards, & I wouldn't be surprised if other games share the same issue about ATI. Lastly, ATI Tech Support sucks. They don't give you much help other than asking you to reinstall everything & go open up a ticket with the game provider.

I switch over to an nVidia card, everything works! You don't have to call them with graphics or game loading issues.

So it could be a $200 card with a lot of baggage tied to it. It's not like I can call ATI & have them magically fix my game issues or send me a replacement that works 100%. The troubleshooting headaches aren't worth it. Same with AMD..awful Mobos and CPUs.

Thanks, but no thanks.

It's not an "argument", it's just something they're pointing out because it's true.

The 4850 $199 of pure 1337ness

Its 10% faster than the 9800GTX

So its around 20-40% faster than the 8800gt

Well unfortunately there is a point were technology cannot become more powerful. I just hope we hit full photo-realism before that happens. Moore's law shows that eventually transistors are becoming so small that it will be impossible to make them smaller. They will be the size of atoms. So there is a limit.

It does beat the 8800GT in every test that I saw and is priced similarly. Can only get better from here, me thinks the tests were done using beta drivers.

I think the coolest feature about these cards is that if you already have a 3870, you can crossfire the 4000 series with them :P AMD has nVidia handidly beat when it comes to price/value/performance. Though nvidia still controls the enthusiast level graphics. At least until the 4870x2 releases later this year. So if your pockets are deep enough, 650$ deep then go with a GTX 280.

I mean, you cant really comapre a 4850 to a 280gtx. they do the same, but one is a mclaren f1 and teh other one is a bmw m3. my bad.

By the time this card is $50, games will be so advance that the point of the card is useless. Thats why we don't see GPUs such as a 7950GT still in retail, obso1337.

that made me regret i bought a high end gaming PC last year. I have an eVGA 8800 GTS 320 and i'm gonna use this baby till the day it dies (when it can't play newly released gamea anymore). By that time, i'm sure there will be video cards way better than the current cards right now.

the crappy 3870 already gave 2x the performance of a normal xbox 360. :/

Two 4850 in crossfire already beat by a small margin the GTX280 5-10%.

The R700 should beat the GTX280 by around 30% and less price.

But expect nvidia to counter the R700 with the GT200b.

Your right, the wall is apparently attainable in the next 10-20 years, so its close, but there are already alternatives to just smaller and smaller transistors being researched like carbon and quantum computing which is based on the laws of quantum mechanics :o I'm dying to see how the latter will work.

As a hermit I've got to say: Who cares?

Developers wont develope for that card just like they don't develope for quad core processors. Sure you will be able run with supermax settings, but the core of the game will not be molded for high end users. As always, games will be built around the mid line users and be expandable for the high end users.

EDIT: Furthermore the problem with the PC has always been that hardware is non standard, and the lowest denominator must always be considered. This has always been an arena in which consoles have had an advantage because developers only need to design for one, or a couple pieces of hardware that do not vary significantly. This is also the reason why this card is not significant when it comes to game development 'yet'.

It has been true since the consoles were released that a tricked out PC would easily outdue them, but not nearly enough of the PC gaming population has the higher end brand new hardware.

(Real Time graphics)

Chip maker AMD has invested heavily into hyperbole research, proudly proclaiming that its new graphics chip, the RV770, is "more powerful than every generation of video game console ever brought to market combined." The RV770, demoed Monday, is capable of processing one trillion floating operations per second on a single chip, a feat that AMD says "punches a sizeable hole in the sensory barrier."

Consoles are so far behind PC, its not even funny.

2009 will be the year where PC owns so hard like it did from the 90's to year 2006.

Dev's will see the light and come back to PC with big games

These ATI Cards start at $199 (So the price argument won't work)

The 4850 is already out.... http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Description=4850&x=0&y=0

The 4870 is coming out soon, and will be priced at $250

Uh. No. Those cards may have been self described mid range cards, but they are NOT the only cards the consumer owns. It should also be noted that in PC gaming, much more than a video card is mandatory. Furthermore, if you look at the link provided its easy to see that the majority of people do not break 2gb RAM and do not break 3ghz of processing power nor do the majority have more than one core on their CPUs.

This card will not have the impact some here want to pretend.

Forgot to mention that screen shot is powered by two of those cards, so to get graphics like that will cost $500, then you're going to need the other parts.

Yup, price still an issue.

Price, power comsumption, and heat output have always been problems with high end cards and they will be if the trend continues.

That doesn't impress me in the least bit. Since the Cell is the best.

nVidiaGaMer

Dont expect that much from the cell

Fake chart. Nice try though. The Cell is the most powerful.

whatever hermits can have all their fun for a couple of years until the Next generation consoles comes out and smacks around some pc's. pc hardware is almost always inferier to new consoles for a little but eventually overtake again. dont be surprised to see 3 of those cards inside Xbox 360 IINameless-Hero

What makes you think PS4/Xbox 3 will be power houses, when they see Nintendo make a fortune off cheaper hardware.

Companies want to make money, not lose it.
