From looking at Crysis, which already looks significantly better than anything on the new consoles, it seems that PCs are moving ahead of consoles faster than they did in the past. Would that be true?

The Readeon X2900XTX with its 700 Million transistors and 512Gflops owns any SLi & Crossfire setup with any card.

Yes, but I recon, next-gen the gap between PC and Console will be the closest its been ever when PS4 or X720(Xbox 3) release.

No thanks that card will only be good for a handfull of games and I'd rather play on my 61" HDTV then my 24" monitor anydayNugtoka
Graphics cards usually have TV outs. The new DX10 cards now come equiped with HDMI. Unless you dont know much about computers, you can play PC games on your HDTV.

Actually if I recall the 7900GT is in the same league as the 1800 XT, Xenos in the 360 in terms of shader power is straddled right between a 1800XT and 1900XT. So it don't own nothin =P

Now these newer beasts, well duh...they are the price of the entire consoles themselves. These DX10 cards are no joke.

if you didn't know ati said it is around the power of a x850xt with sm3 and unified shaders.  if its the power of a x1800 how come the x1800 own the 360 inevery game to date?  m$ has really brainwahsed the lems if you thing ati's last gen highend card is only as powerful as x360.

the tricky bit is he mentions 600mhz.. a 150mhz overclock from the 450mhz stock speeds. :) it would make for a noticable bump in power.

exactly. :D a very nice boost in performance, funny my card runs oblivion on ultra high, HDR, 8x AF, at 1680x1050, where the almighty Xenos can't even have AF, not even metioning lower precision HDR, and Resolution. :D

and my less powerful card can run 1280x1024 on ultra high with 16x af with hdr

That fan on that card screams breakage to me.

Could you imagine trying to clean the heat sinks on the card... You would have to some how pop that plastic cover off.

I can't wait to see 2900xtx2 vs 8950 gx2, battle of the super cards. Yea Ati copy Duel cards like they did with Sli, thanks to Nvidia we have duel cards and Sli, better for us consumers though.darkmanure
dude, 3dfx invented and had 'SLI' as their trademark in the late 1990's. nvidia bought them out after 3dfx 'lost' the graphics card battle vs. ati and nvidia, so nvidia got the sli trademark and gets to use it now.

The performance is kinda lame considering the 8800s where out last november & still have crappy drivers. Hopefully these cards will be better in DX10 then Nvidia, but by the time those games come out the next set of DX10 cards will be out.

Yeah, so? RTS is my favorite genre. More fun for me! Oh, and STALKER is an AMAZING FPS. Definently a classic.

Stalker is good but its glitchy as hell.  Its definitely not a classic too.

Depending on how much it is..I might get this. I mean, the 8800 GTS 640 mb is already a beast and it is LOUD. I am not going to hesitate to say that this card will sound like you are going through a high-speed wind-tunnel, as it is not only massive, but it has a sound card built in, too.

thats not true at all.

a 7900GT will run any game maxed out....including Oblivion which looks far better on the PC....

once GEOW does come to PC's that card will run it without a problem.

Isn't it common knowledge that all dx10 cards will outperform consoles? We already accepted this with the 8800, and this card is even more powerful.

Yes, they wipe the floor with the much older and less expensive console cards, still, how is this ownage? It is to be expected.

Still, the thing is amazing. How long is it supposed to be before a mid-priced dx10 card comes out?

Fry-o-fish

They're already out and they suck. The  GeForce 8600GTS can't even outperform the Radeon x1950pro at any DX9 application, and likely lacks the power for proper DX10 games in the same way that a card like the Radeon x1650, while capable of HDR, isn't powerful enough to use it.

Wait six months to a year and you'll have the price drops or the more powerful $200 type "upper midrange" cards.

This doesn't "own" console though - you're not playing GeoW, Halo 3, MGS4, FF XIII, Mario Galaxies, Twilight Princess, et cetera on a PC. It just means better graphics for PC gamers who can afford it (which most can't) on upcoming games, in the same way that a new console means better graphics for console fans.

Vandal - there are literally hundreds of games on each side of the equation. There are more than seven console games you won't be getting on PC, and more than seven PC games you won't be getting on a console. Frankly, I don't see how a graphics card "owns" consoles - it is about the games.

You yourself, on many occassions, argue that the PC is a superior platform, and that it is best because you don't need to upgrade until you want to (I disagree, but this is not the point) - so again, obviously the only reason you could argue for is games.

I don't see releasing a graphics card that costs more than the Xbox 360 and Wii as "ownage". I like seeing progress - hopefully there will be games that are just as creative as that card is powerful - I don't think the PC needs another RTS, FPS, MMORPG, or WRPG with updated graphics, which unfortunatley is what that hardware seems to be aimed at.

Long time ago - it would be quite a dig to find it, but most of our comments are aimed at doing - knocking consoles, supporting PCs. It's a rather biased comparisson to put a lifetime of PC games against any one console, after all, PC gaming was around before console gaming, and the lifespan of any one console is only five or six years.

If we take a cross-section of PC gaming history, for example compare 2003 to 2007 PC gaming against 2003 to 2007 console gaming, I'd think you'd find that consoles offer more highly-rated games. This is, of course, because we'd be discussing multiple consoles. But even a comparison between the PS2, 2000 to 2005, versus PC gaming 2000 to 2005, would have them rather evenly matched game-wise. It would really come down to a hardware battle that te PC would win.

With the ever improving online services of consoles, and hardware improvements, I think the issue for many PC gamers simply comes down to the games they're used to, and the controls they're used to, more than an actual "which is better" issue. I feel PCs offer inferior gaming for the investment, as many of my interests lie in genres usually poorly represented on PCs.

Every genre is apparent in some form or fashion on the PC including, but not limited to fighters and action games. While we don't have as many of these specific genres, we DO haev them. I never even said anything about the PC's past catalog. The PC has, and is continuing to have the most annually released high quality titles averaging one AAA a month, and endless ammounts of AA ttiles. During the PS2 life span it had about 67 AAA give or take 5. The PC had about 140 give or take 21. (It has been awhile since I used the statistic, so Its a little rough.

Quantity does not equal quality, and the limited number of PC titles (especially AAA titles) in certain genres is problematic. If you're a fan of JRPGS, you're getting a PS2 (and soon an Xbox 360 and PS3), not a gaming PC. While FF VII and FF VIII were at one point released as badly-executed ports for the PC, they're almost impossible to find these days, and new JRPGs are not on the PC.

Fans of the Halo series have to get an Xbox 360 to get the latest game, same as fans of Metal Gear Solid will need a PS3. In an ideal world, all games would be platform agnostic, but this isn't an ideal world.

In any case, the main point is that games are the issue - a graphics card is not "ownage" on consoles. Halo 3 being simultaneously released on PC? That probably would be. Wii add on for the PC? Yeah... A piece of hardware? Not really.

For the price I shouldn't certainly hope it does.

(response based solely on thread title and my assumption about the price...)

No surprise that a PC graphics card is released within 6 months of the newest Next-Gen system going on sale that totally dominates graphically.  This happens all the time.  PC's always make several leaps over 5 years where as consoles usually make only one.

Nothing new here move along. ;)

Actually, in terms of ratings, quantity DOES equal qualitiy. You see, reviews are basd off of comparing games to other games in the same genre. With more games on one platform, the standards get higher. In such a case, you normally see constantly lowering scores. So why, do I ask, would the PC CONTINUE to have the most high quality titles? Because they are of the highest quality that can stand up to extreme comparisons to over 165 other AAA games. The PC simply has higher standards. In this case, quantity DOES equal quality.

18 months, not 6. The PS3 was intended for, and built using hardware from the same generation as, the same time period as the Xbox 360. It simply was delayed due to their own ineptitude in manufacturing the Blu-Ray diodes and "teh cell".

So in 18 months, the PC market has produced a graphics card that will produce better graphics than the Xbox 360, assuming you have a high-end processor, power supply, and enough RAM to match it.

Again, what does this have to do with "owning" consoles?

From looking at Crysis, which already looks significantly better than anything on the new consoles, it seems that PCs are moving ahead of consoles faster than they did in the past. Would that be true?

Yes, theres an article thats been posted numerous times here, "PC Gaming to Leapfrog Consoles with Directx10" which is completely true... and this is only the beggining.

[QUOTE="muscleserge"]my 600mhz 7900GT owns all console, the HD 2900XT owns them 4 times over.imprezawrx500

Correction, Mike Doggett of ATI (research team)Stated that Xenos was similar in performace to an 1800XT optimized for 720p resolution, but that Xenos had slightly more shader power/buffer bandwidth. He did state that at higher resolutions like say 1600x1200 or 1080p that 1800XT could very well outperform it...but we'll never know.

I'm not sitting here trying to say consoles are more powerful then top end PC's, they aren't....but they aren't given enough credit. Besides, there are games that look better then oblivion (which was a port in the first place) that were built for the console ground up.

well one thing is for sure, we can't benchmark Xenos, but it not a super powerful GPU like many lemms tend to believe. Fact of the matter is theoretically the x1800xt is more powerful. By PC standards Xenos is an upper midrange GPU.

I think the "ownage" is that this graphics card will (hopefully) produce graphics above and beyond anything the PS3 or 360 can or will ever produce.

From a strictly graphics perspective (this is a thread about a graphics card) that would be "ownage".

No thanks that card will only be good for a handfull of games and I'd rather play on my 61" HDTV then my 24" monitor anydayNugtoka
If you had any kind of 61" HDTV worth bragging about, then it can be used as a monitor.
