The Witcher had nice detail on the visual side of things. When you get drunk you can see it as blurred vision and in Geralt's walk, when you kill people you can see their heads rolling, blood spread on the floor and sword get tainted with blood. If you poison your blade you actually see Geralt smear it on the sword and the sword glitter from the coating. Weapons are not in an invisible inventory you can always see them on his person and so on. Stuff like that is not important on its own but fill the game with it and it really helps create the atmosphere.

mr_mozilla

+ the NPCs were hiding from rain under the buildings or whatever they could get to. That's the very first time I saw it in any game.

i guess when it comes to story detail and background detail mass effect is pretty damn good.

For instance the Codec it had in the menu with a narrated section and a written section that explained in fair detail basically everything in that game, and the story itself was fairly detailed.

i completely agree with what you said about the legend of zelda: windwaker.......it's still one of my favorite games ever made.....swirly explosions FTW

but one game that blew me away with the details was GTA4.....just the lengths they went to make the game seem like a real city blew me away....it had every detail down.....even the littering out of a car window of the creepy vibe you get when your walking down an orange lit tunnel in a city at night....now ididnt notice many hobos begging for change ......and usually cities have that in high quantity lol

Shenmue needs to be mentioned, again if it already has been. I could be looking for sailors forever in its world.

For games with ridiculous levels of detail, try any MGS game, there's so many little things and easter eggs in those games. Also Blizzard's games too.

[QUOTE="SpruceCaboose"][QUOTE="MaxPower15"]

[QUOTE="SpruceCaboose"]Yeah...Epic payed attention to the details. Especially that one detail about having a decent story... :DMaxPower15

This game wasn't meant to be about the story. It seems like it on the surface but action games are more about exciting scenarios than plot. You just need good set pieces. Even if the story is good, it wouldn't make much of a different IMO.

I was laughing about how the locust just exist but nobody questions how they started out.

To you it wouldn't make a difference. To me, I view a game that tells an effective and engaging story as miles ahead of games that don't or won't make use of gaming as something more than visceral thrills.

Not that GeoW was bad, but it had so muh wasted potential it makes me almost laugh to say that they payed attention to details like how the shotgun reloading looks instead of fleshing out the story so it felt like something more than a late 80s big dumb flick.

Dispute on my opinion all you want....but if you name me one action game which you think had a good story, I can guarantee i'll find massive holes in it.

I'll say it again, we're not talking about gameplay details.

GOW, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword... all good action games with fully fleshed out stories... Just like movies, some games may have minor holes in their logic to connect the dots... but many games have a much more fulfilling story than the first Gears did. I think that's why Epic knew to address this issue on the sequel. A game is always more enjoyable when it tells a good story.

Gears attention to detail? Where did your partner get the code to open up some doors from? Where does that robot metal cutter come from it has a name but I never knew why it would just appear but not other times for other doors I wanted open. Why are doors open but I can't go in? Why does a dead monster spider roar but his mouth doesn't move lol? Why have steps with no sides but I can't hop off to get ammo that is next to the steps below? Why have textures that appear and disappear depending on the way you stand? Why have a enemy ambushing me then go to a cutscene and come back and the enemy is no where to be found? Why can't I drop a weapon and know I can pick it up again sometimes I can sometimes I can't lol. Why can I drop a weapon and not get to it again because of invisible wall that I can't get around to pick it up again? Why no story for the game? Why the voice acting so bad?

Never mind I could go on all day with this one. Gears was about as unfinished and unpolished of a game that I have ever played minus some betas I've tried.

Assasins Creed. Not my favorite game, but good. People in the background had discussions of what would have been taking place in that time in history. Also small thinks such as a cloud passing in front of the sun would make the picture darker until it passed by.

In MGS4 I was panning the camera around Snake and I saw that his eyes looked wierd. I then started running around, looked again, and I found out that he squints when you face the sun!

I also saw the gas coming out of the cooling vents on the gekko's legs and it blurs the background environment. There was actually a whole thread in the Playstation 3 section about amazing details found in this game.

Company of Heroes

Enormous detail in animations ranging from infantry reloading, sighting guns, and manuevering behind cover, to tank shells bouncing off armor.

On top of that theres the outstanding detail in the voiceovers for every unit that changes depending on the situation.

Wait, so you mention gears of war when it comes to attention to detail but not halo? Are you for real? Gears is textures galore with mid level attention to detail.

Just look at this- and dont forget that halo's levels are immensely larger than Gear's

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWTbZ3Rbm54&fmt=18

seriously now. And unlike a lot of games (like oblivion or crysis) it's not just the same stuff repeated. Everything is hand placed.

gears has about as much detail as the parts in halo which you have to glitch out of in theater mode to access.

Story isn't really very necessary. A good story can help a game, but I think often times, too much effort is put into a story to hide lack of gameplay.

For shooters, if the game is good enough you don't need a much better story then "OMG we totally have to kill all the badguys!"

GTA IV is untouchable when it comes to little details, there was such a huge amount of care put into the city, just a few examples would be how cops chase criminals through the street, if you wait until the criminal is cornered, then distract the officer, the guy will make a run for it! Or if you use a drink machine, Niko will then throw the can to the floor, which you can then pick up and throw at peds. Or how, if you push a guy into a railing, they'll grab onto it to keep their balance. Its amazing.

makes you wonder why they wouldn't take the time to let the character not gave to walk in a circle to turn around?

Seriously though, GTA4 is very, very detailed.... for a sandbox style game.

No questions asked, the two games with the most attention to detail have been GTA4 and MGS4.

No other game even comes close to them.

How does Uncharted have a good story? You want illogic, try moving statues to enter a chamber that no one has been in for 400 years, to find enemy soldiers. How did they get in there? Same goes later in the game with the Roman Numeral puzzles you battle to open up a gate and find enemy soldiers. Uncharted's story ripped off Indiana Jones and did a horrible job. I wouldn't call Uncharted's fleshed out or good. BTW GOW's story is just copied because Jaffe can't come up with a good story on his own...

Sadly Bioshock suffers from this exact problem.

I also thought GTA 4 had some incredible moments such as when I saw some random ped jump on the on the rails in the subway or when I heard weird noises in the Sprunk factory.

I'm pretty sure it was made to be like that. It has an elaborate back story, and that's juxtaposed to finding that resonator lol.

This I can agree with. Rapture is one of a very few game worlds where I felt true suspension of disbelief.

I dunno dude, it seemed too claustrophobic....all these psychos around and you're the only sane person? Ya that's believable.

And then there were the water-powered, intelligent turrets that were somehow made with 1930's technology.

MGS4 and FF VII are untouchable tonaruto7777

Hahahahahaha FFVII is the most overrated game of all time. Got good scores just cause of some fancy graphics in some of the cutscenes. The biggest example of no attention to detail and huge amount of scripted content to make up for derivative gameplay.

Its detailed enough that the soldiers and the rebel didn't recognise Raiden, but would have if he was just using snakes face lol. Good try though. Also that was atleast that guys 2nd play through to have Raidens face to wear. Also did you know if you do certain things you get the Cloaking suit inwhich you can run through the whole game with no one noticing. Its called easter eggs and unlocks, it has nothing to do with broken gameplay or not having detail lol.

Once again good try, and have a great day :)

I think Halo 3 has incredible attention to detail. :) The way you can stop the game in movie mode, detach the camera and go look inside the covenant drop ships. Even though you never see them in-game, they model out the inside in amazing detail anyway.

Ever played a certain game that pays so much attention to small details that it ends up making the game a lot better than the competition?

Ok, this is not really an objective discussion....more about what suits your taste but I'll start it off first. One of my best two examples are Gears of War, and Zelda.

First things first: Gears of war has panache. It's not only badass but the way everything handles in the game is all about style. For example, the developers could've put in generic weapon animations....but if you look at how they did the shotgun reload, it's just really nice how he spins the gun like arnold does in T2. Another example is the curb stomp. Usually developers don't make players pull off "style" moves in multiplayer but they did that time with Gears.

That's attention to detail. Now for zelda, I haven't played TP but I loved wind waker. If you consider all the interactive elements of that game, there's nothing that comes close to it in the genre. When I first played the game, i was examining all the details they put in it and that has nothing to do with graphics.

Now if only developers would stop paying attention to useless gimmicks....like motion control.

MaxPower15

This is a rather bold post you have here but I realy like it. So if your really in to the artistic detail and what not of a game, Give Clover's Okami a spin. (The PS2 Version) You will wonder how they nailed it so good. (Plus, its a capcom game)

I remember when i was playing DQ8 and walked in the inn at night. Some of the NPC's which were walking around in the day were lying in bed, that's got to be one of the most memorial attention to details i remember.

The last one I can recall is GTA IV, its just amazing to see some little funny things. I still know that one time I accidentaly destroyed a mailbox, it fell on the ground and a lot of letters flew over the highway. Some cars slipped over them causing a huge chainreaction of crashing cars.
