I found this news article interesting (since I'm Australian) as it reports that Aussie gamers believe that PS3 will end up the number 1 console this gen again with over 100 million sales, just like the PS2.

Obviously it's pure speculation, but it is interesting nonetheless. Keep in mind PS2/DS is still by far the best selling combo down here. PS3/360/Wii are not selling extremely well, and it's basically because they're simply too expensive atm.

I picked out the main parts of the article:

A survey was taken of over 3,000 Australian gamers on whether or not they believe that Sony and the PlayStation 3 will eventually rule over the Microsoft Xbox 360 just as they did last generation with the PlayStation 2 over the Xbox.

The survey and report makes the point that Sony should end up selling more than 100 million of the PlayStation 3 consoles before it is all said and done.

They also found that many people believe that the PS3 will be a success even though Microsoft and Nintendo have built an early lead over the Sony next-generation platform.

Sony was the preferred console of choice to 40% of gamers in 2006 for Australia and in 2007 that has only dropped to 39%.

Source: The same people who first broke the FFXIII not exlusive to PS3 news.

Thoughts? Opinions? Rants?

Are us Aussies totally wrong or are we onto something here? I personally agree with them although I suspect PS3 numbers will be 80 million +, not 100 million +.

thats a good read. as always you post the best topics.

i think most people are starting to realize the potential is closer to reality then before. with games like lair, ninja gaiden, warhawk, heavenly sword, all on the horizon in the next couple of months. I think HOME and LittleBigPlanet really suprised critics and consumers alike of how fast the sony playstation brand can redeem itself.

This is my opinion, and generally my opinion turns out to be fact ( = lol.

It could happen. By the time the PS3 is within price range of more mainstream consumers, HDTV penetration rates should be much more satisfying, there should be an excellent back catelog of games for the PS3, then suddenly the thing will start to fly off of shelves. When the PS3 reaches prices at or under $300 I think it could see dramatic increase in sales, but that price range could be many years away.

Well the survey is biased as it mentions nothing about the Wii.

Lets see what most people would prefer:

PS3: $1000

360 Premium: $600

Wii: $400

Note the fact that both the 360 and Wii had sold 30% more than the PS3 (which came out last). Plus most Australians know very little about video games as we are casual dominated market.

3,000 people don't really represent a nation of 20 million properly. Without asking all of them, it's impossible to know if they've asked the majority of Sony fans, or a random mixed bag of general gamers.

All I know for a 10 day launch PS3 still sold less then 360 and Wii did in 3 days. 3000 people is a fraction of the people.  Also with the attach rate for 360 =more developer interest = more games = more consoles sold. Isn't the attach rate for PS3 like 1/2 the 360 now?

Im Australian and I do not believe that. Only 3000 people is not enough. You need at least 10,000 people to get any acurate information. And most of them would say that because Aussies loved te PS2. Almost everybody I know had a PS2 last gen and only a few had an Xbox.

A survey of 3000 people is pretty meaningless and so are Australian game sales in comparison to US/Europe/Japan. I'm Australian too but it still doesn't mean anything.

360 will sell as well as the PS2 did

Wii will sell as well as the DS is

PS3 will sell as well as the Xbox/GC did .

Oppinion of course , but more true then wrong at this time .

Remember all those PS3 will sell well on name alone threads? This is a natural outgrowth of that, the PS3 has great name brand recognition, and casuals are going to say PS3 almost automatically. Had this poll taken place 12 years ago the answer would have been Nintendo. Now that I think about it I'm suprised the answer was not Nintendo this time actually.

Hundreds of thousands? Really, now? Highly unlikely seeing as you'd have to have a perfect sample of societies makeup in correct percentages. This is why a few thousand are usually taken and even then it's only a motivated guess at an outcome (Depending on where the test is taken, when it's taken, the questions asked, who is giving the questions). Oh, Soc major here, I study statistics and I wouldn't put to much behind this one poll. While I agree with what the polls outcome was I couldn't use this to prove anything or to make my arguement any stronger.

You= liar/need to go to class more.

If you really studied statistics, you'd know that 1000-1500 is the sweet spot for polls (balancing costs vs accuracy). If the poll was taken in a professional manner, then it has more than enough responses to give a reasonable assessment.

lol, I know 3000 isn't much but it's interesting nonetheless. There really aren't that many gamers down here though. The PS2 is the best selling console ever here and it's only sold about 2.5 million, from a population of around 23 million.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Gaming is just not a big thing here yet, not sure why. I suppose it's because most of us are very outdoorsy...and there are like a million beaches in Australia.

75% (might of been 70%, can't remember...) of PS2 sales came when it was under $250 AU! That's how long people waited.

Come to Sydney, our cost of living is higher than 95% of the US, our average house price is $530,000 ($450,000 US). We are one of the richect countries in the world but our video game market is domiated by casuals, bot because we don't have money.
