@sakaixx: Why should I care if Xbox games eventually make their way to PS5?

All that means is more money for Xbox, which means more games to play on Xbox, and Game Pass becomes a better and better value.

Phil Spencer said this under oath:

“Every time we ship a game on PlayStation, Sony captures 30 percent of that revenue, and they use that money to do things to reduce Xbox’s survival on the market."

Sony will take that money and keep building a stronger platform that doesn't include Xbox or GamePass. I don't think PlayStation will ever stop trying to take away the Xbox console market share. They'll gladly take the millions of customers and they'll be very happy to do so since consoles are their bread and butter.

Yeah, but that concept of platform exclusivity is going the way of the dinosaur. Even Square Enix said "no more exclusives". So, if Sony can't buy "console exclusives" anymore, how are they going to grow their business?

Either they make their games available on more platforms, make games cheaper (no more 6-8 year AAA games), or they move to something like a live service games (which rarely work).

You can choose not to believe me all you want, but I am telling you - every game will eventually be on every platform. Sony will rationalize it with their fan base the same way they do with PC: "Well, if Xbox players finally play GoW: Ragnarok, they will be hungry for a sequel; which will arrive on PS6 for _____ months first."

This is the exact same scenario with PCs back in the day.

They'll find new ways; just look at what they're doing with the India Hero Project and China Hero Project.

And again, eating up the Xbox's console market share will just give me them more customers and lessen their need to release on other platforms. PlayStation really won't need to go day and date for their single player games if they gain 20-30m+ new customers on top of their existing base.

I imagine Game Pass get a significant bump if they would get these convention demos available for Ultimate subscribers to play.

I'm not saying day-and-date. I'd say 6 to 12 months later.

Avowed's Possible Endings "Number In The Double Digits"

Endings in Obsidian's upcoming RPG will be "the sum total" of choices made during the game.

"That is very hard to say, but I can tell you our ending slides number in the double digits," Patel said. "And you can end up with a lot of different combinations of them. This is an Obsidian game, so your ending is really the sum total of your choices across the game, across a lot of pieces of content depending on what you encountered and what you did when you found it."

Nooooo. I want the game to be a failure. I love it when games fall flat on their face!!

Seriously though: good to hear. The last demo for this looked a bit flat. Nice to hear that it looks like it's coming together nicely. Hopefully it delivers when it arrives.

It's Obsidian so I'm sure it will at least be solid. I'm basically expecting fantasy the Outer Worlds

It being Obsidian doesn't mean anything anymore. Everyone left the studio, and it showed in Outer Worlds.

I mean, I've dug their last few games including Grounded and Pentiment so I'm comfortable saying I like the work of the current iteration of Obsidian

Just when my interest was growing, this comes out,

“Speaking on the Iron Lords Podcast, art director Matt Hansen said Obsidian is "targeting a baseline of 30fps" for the first-person fantasy RPG. 60fps sounds unlikely, however, even on the more powerful Xbox Series X.

Explaining, Hansen said Obsidian decided to go for 30fps in order to facilitate fancier visuals, and that because Avowed is a first-person, single-player game, "you don't necessarily need that 60 frames."

It’s a first person game so we don’t need 60fps?!?! Huh?

@loudheadphones: Why the Hell would you want MS to exit the console space? Hasn’t Sony arrogance but you in the arse enough?

MS exiting would mean a $1000 PS6 and $100 games, dummy.

Would certainly like it to have been 60fps but I can easily enjoy 30fps just fine as well. Definitely not a deal-breaker for me.

If Obsidian was not owned by MS, they would be hyping the game. But, since they are, in their fanboy delusion, they must renounce it. To go against the almighty overlord known as "their little blue and white piece of plastic" is too much to bear - all rivals must be sh*t on.

It's part of the requirements to be a true Sony Pony/Cow.

What? Obsidian was in my top 3 fav developers back in the New Vegas days and prior, but what have they made since? I played Outer Worlds for around 50h, so i have seen what this game has to offer, and it was just shit all around. Just like Rare, Obsidian is not the Obsidian from the past.

Playing this game on PC but what is it with Xbox not having performance options at launch? And then they keep bringing out the 60fps isn't needed line every single time.

They suck. They are rookies. Blows my mind that they can make the biggest OS, have a trillion dollar cloud software business, but can't manage game performance on a CLOSED device.

PlayStation records 100% of sales on their platform as revenue. The 30% cut is the *profit*.

But more importantly, it isn't a zero-sum game; taking that 70% cut on PlayStation is going to reduce how much they bring in elsewhere on their own platform. I'm sure Microsoft has run the numbers and found that getting that 70% outweighs what they bring in on Xbox. Do understand what that means? It means they see more benefit in their own content than their own console ecosystem.

If Sony sells a copy of a $70.00 Call of Duty on PSN, Sony will get $21.00, Xbox will get $49.00. Xbox will get $70 of $70 for each copy sold on Microsoft Windows PC (largest platform) and Xbox. Then they will get Game Pass revenue for Call of Duty.

@Nonstop-Madness: the money in the gaming industry is in the software - Sony knows this just as well as MS.

100%

But, the question is which leads to a better financial outcome:

all software on your own platform vs your own software

The second option could come out on top *if* you have a massively successful first party and are on all platforms. And even so, the success of your software leads to the success of the other platforms. Both options are on the same scale; Microsoft just tipped it heavily towards their own software the moment they spent $8B on Bethesda and $70B on ABK.

At the end of the day, it comes down to which are you better positioned in. Both Nintendo and PlayStation are better in the platform position while Microsoft is better in the software position.

The great thing here is, while PS is taking 30%, Xbox will be taking 70% from PS gamers, which they were never taking before, in addition to the 100% they get from Xbox and PC. Sony will be the one that puts Xbox ahead in revenue. Kinda ironic.

If Sony sells a copy of a $70.00 Call of Duty on PSN, Sony will get $21.00, Xbox will get $59.00. Xbox will get $70 of $70 for each copy sold on Microsoft Windows PC (largest platform) and Xbox. Then they will get Game Pass revenue for Call of Duty.

That's not how Sony's accounting works.

For digital:

Sony gets paid $70 (reports it as revenue), then essentially refunds ABK their $49 (reports $21 as profit and, $49 as expenses).

Their profit margins would be *significantly* larger if they reported it the way you suggest.

I wasn't talking about "reporting". I was talking about Sony receiving $21 for COD, and Microsoft receiving $49 for COD. The way it was before, Microsoft would get $21 and Activision would get $49. But now Microsoft gets $70.00 for the Xbox version, $49.00 for the Steam version, $49.00 for the PS version, and eventually $49.00 for the Nintendo version.

Microsoft used to only receive $21.00 for Xbox copies.

Before acquisition:

$21.00 for Xbox sale

Post acquisition:

$70.00 for Xbox sale

$49.00 for Steam sale

$49.00 for PS sale

$49.00 for Nintendo sale (when it's ported to new Nintendo)

Increased revenue from Game Pass subscribers

Remember, Sony funds their first party games from those $21.00 copies of Call of Duty. Think about what MS will be able to fund with $21, $70, $49 copies and Game Pass revenue.

And that is just COD!

All your saying is MS will make more money by simply owning COD. Of course that's true.

But, the context of the conversation isn't framed around just their first party content.

The argument, if you will, is if getting $70 of revenue and $21 of profit off of games like Hogwarts, Madden, FIFA, Assassin's Creed, Elden Ring etc. outweighs making your "post-acquisition" money from first party games. Microsoft is saying, yes, that latter calculus is better for us. Sony is saying, no, we make way more money off of the industry than ourselves. Again, I don't think anyone is *wrong*. They simply want to operate differently.

My conspiracy theory is that they launch these titles with 30fps only to announce and release a 60fps patch later to keep their games relevant and thus attract more subscribers. Those currently subscribed would hopefully stay subscribed until such a patch is released.

True but Sony gets that $21 for free while MS has to develop and market the game while putting the game on a subscription service.

Nice try. MS tried to destroy the gaming industry in the last 10+ years, especially in last 6 years with its subscription push and buying big publishers. Glad that backfired. Glad that Sony and Nintendo are pushing selling games first and foremost and game ownership. Xbox should GTFO from console space and its fandom and don't come back ever. You have done enough damage to the game industry. Just GTFO.

LMAO.

Maybe you're too young to remember "I want people to want to work extra hours to be able to afford it."

The PS3 cost $930 in todays dollars at launch. Sony thought they could get away with that because they dominated with the PS2.

So, you GTFO, ignorant fanboy.

And what it has to do with destroying the industry? Sony almost fucked themselves, not the industry. People would stil buying games first and foremost. And PS3 recovered greatly later. What MS tried with Xbox and Gamepass is pure clusterfuck. Glad it backfired tremendously and world showed MIDDLE FINGER to Xbox and Xbox console is on life support. So, GTFO Xbox fandom and don't come back ever. Btw. you've said there will be no Indy on PS5, yes. Let's guess which game is next??
