Nice tech-demo, is this a game as well?
Maybe it is, but I'm pretty sure about one thing: This is a sure "movie" for the consolites.
The most impresisve part isn't the actual explosion in itself.
Has the ATV explains, the system now allows for systemic damage to each component and in different parts of the ship.
Has shown in the Taly interior, the more damaged the ship gets, different effects start happening, like light failures, smoke, small fires, crack windows, violent shakes, etc, etc. It might even be possible to knock out teh gravity generator.
So it's not just some stratches. Depending on weapon, devlocity, heat, area of effect, interal vs external attacks, and so forth, the ship reacts differently and it even affetcs it's handling.
Basically, it's the most advanced damage model in gaming far. The explosion is the, really good, cheery on top.
Not impressive in the slightest. Doesn't even have ejecting seats to escape the explosion.
Pffffft. Lame.

Yup,,, watched the whole show and the interview. Sounds awesome.

Actually the damage model has been featured in a lot of pure sims. It's nothing really new to the industry, it's just being applied to Star Citizen where it fit perfectly.
For Star Citizen it actually makes their lives a lot easier since they no longer have to specify individual damage scenarios for the ships. Using the GOST system (a state machine), they can change the state of individual components throughout the ship. So the only need to program damage on a per-object basis and then stick them all in the ship. The physics based damage system works on the physics layer which interacts with all of the objects. As explosions and whatnot radiate out from missile impacts or component explosions, the individual objects calculate their own damage based on the forces received and then change their state.
The ship software just scans the state of the objects, just like you would in real life, and updates your HUD and the ship's computers based on what's going on. The system is actually much more "realistic" in terms of the flow of events. It makes development a lot more logical as stuff happens in the order it would happen in real life.
Just the interior of one of the multicrew ship as it explodes.
Possibly the most impressive part of the video, certainly from a technical view point. Two completely different physical layers being simultaneously affected by a single entity or in this case, a chain of events. Each small explosion seen outside has to have a corresponding explosion inside as well.
I wonder if the electrical arcing through the ship can kill crew members before it goes pop.

i hope not..kinda wanna be alive till the ship itself goes boom
It makes its first mistake in the first 3 seconds: there are no shockwaves in space. For the amount of money put into this game, the attention to the physical constants in space should have been taken care of first thing.
its still a video game.

meaning it never advertised itself as being very realistic in every aspect. nitpicking ships explosions is abit much IMO

Not true - it does advertise itself as the be all and end all of space sims. For the money involved and the scope promised, your 'nit-picking' is actually the content of the game.
God damn this shit gets old. Lets take a comparison of the amount of people who would praise it for being a "realistic space explosion" with no wave, no sound, no fire, vs the amount of people who would want to see the opposite.
News flash, its a video game. Realism sucks.
I was more impressed with the interior damage. I'm going to be saving for my high-end gaming PC for when this is released.
Yep everything is dynamic and the interior will react differently based on the ship situation. There damage system is truly a impressive display.
Oh wow look another tech demo!.... This game was supposed to release last year and you bitches are drooling over an 80 million dollar explosion with n64 starfox quality asteroids in the background. LOL!

There is no innate medium in space by which shockwaves--or anything else--may travel. But a ship in the midst of collapse is going to vent atmosphere into its immediate area. From there, you have enough wiggle room to reason a likely possibility of observing atmospheric effects.
And whenever I hear a spaceship explode, I assume that the game is suspending disbelief; putting the observer in the shoes of the people on board the ship, and not presuming that we'll actually hear anything while seeing its violent destruction from a distance..

They are making a game for GAMERS, not NASA.
Funny thing, if you really are a stickler for realism, it somehow escapes you that you didn't notice that there aren't supposed to be sounds of explosions PRIOR to the shockwaves.
Honestly there a lot of things we just don't know what will truly happen in space. We haven't develop spacecraft that can proficiently travel in space to know the outcome of what will happen if it explodes and etc so its hard to make it realistic when we aren't anywhere close to developing what we see in sci fi.
Being 100% realistic for something like this is kinda hard especially when it is a game and not for some sort of academic use. Also it would be pretty boring if everything was trying to mimic real life situation. Be happy it has a incredible damage system that you won't see in many games.
That is amazing. Shame it's a once in a generation boundry pushing thing.
True you will rarely see games put this much detail. I think the new crackdown is doing something quite impressive with their own destruction.
