Sonic because:
fast > slow
mutant hedgehog > italian plumper
insane doctor > some turtle
better level design with breaching parts and interessting level design > Go a specific way and maybe find a pipe-shortcut or run on top of the screen
Super Sayanjin Sonic >>>>>>>>> anything Mario can turn into
I prefered Mario World to Sonic. But that was cos I was very young and found Sonic too hard, and that underwater drowning sound literally scared me horribly... Both are awesome though.

Used to be a sonic fan. Nowadays the developers nor the gamers on internet understand what sonic was about and what made him great.
I give you one hint: it wasn't his speed.MobilechicaneX
Except that's completely wrong. The hook of Sonic in the first place was the intense speed, that's what SONIC is. And if you're trying to say that modern Sonic games are all speed and no platforming... yeah, no. Play Colours or Generations.
That was the hook, but you'd kinda die a lot of you just ran at full speed :P I'd guess he means the awesome level design. Why do I see this question asked ALL the time? What would be the point of asking which one you like more if I put both?????Why not have an option for both? Both original series were great classics and they will forever be fun to me.

i must of been a smart kid bad, then cause while my best friend was a sonic can i was basically a mario fan. fast fowarding into the future now, who is the most popular and still relevant in the gaming industry now..Rahnyc4
Except Sonic has always been relevant, moreso now than ever. Irrelevant characters do not get a custom playground based after them or their own balloon for the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade.

Nor do they reach the status of being more popular than Mickey Mouse.
Back in the day I don't really know, I had a genesis with sonic 1but Mario was pretty awesome too
Now a days I perfer Sonic. Don't get me wrong the mario game's are great it's just they're too hard for meand i can't very far in any of the 2d ones. However I think DKC is more enjoyable then both.
It's a hard question since I always liked the non-Mario Mario games best (as funny as that sounds) like Yoshi's Island and Wario Land, but I'd say I liked Sonic more than Mario back then.

ArchoNils2
Which series had a better level design is largly dependand what you prefer - speed or slower paced platforming. Sonic's level design is based around speeding thru large levels while Mario's is slower paced and more exploration based.
But as a critical person I have to say the level design in the Mario games is deff. better than in the Sonic games.

Mario.
There was this brief moment when the visual style and speed of Sonic pulled me in, but I came back to my senses luckily. Sonic 2, 3 and Knuckles were really fun at the time and even make for a good nostalgic trip down memory lane from time to time, but they hardly match up to SMB3 let alone SMW and SMW2.
What can I say? Gameplay and content > flash and little substance.
Mario.

So Sonic is just flash and no substance? lol. That kind of talk really irks me, like a lot. Sonic is about platforming with speed, and doing it over and over again to get faster times via the better paths. Mario is about getting powerups and exploring more. They are different takes on the genre, but calling one shallow and flash is ludicrous when both series define gaming.

Haha! I knew I would specifically lure you out with this post. :P
But I do find the Sonic games to be a bit shallow. The Mario games present a wider range of momentum possibilities that are hard wired into the mechanics and the levels are usually built in such a way to accomodate that. Learning to tame that range of momentum and use it to your advantage requires a good deal more practice than the old Sonic mechanics.
As for Mario games being about exploration, sure thats what I do on my first couple of playthroughs, but "doing it over and over again to get faster times via the better paths." as you put it, actually better describes the way I play Mario games and I actually enjoy doing that in Mario far more than I do in the classic Sonics.
We've been through this discussion before though, so I'm not exactly expting an agreement here.
Edit: And shallow probably isn't a good word for it as it is derogatory. Arcadey I guess would be a better way to describe the classicSonic games. Its not bad, but it doesn't appeal to me in the same way that Mario does.

Wow, I can't believe I was baited. If we have discussed this before, sorry, but I rarely keep tabs on posters. :P
I'm not going to bother going into depth since I'm going to eat dinner now, but if you want to talk momentum, yeah, Sonic beats Mario there too. :)

No worries. I just know what gets under certain posters skin and make use of it as I can! Not trying to make an enemy of you though, I tend to agree with you on most other game related things.
As for that video, I must say nice run, but that is not really what I was describing.
For some reason, I can just never get into Mario games. They always felt too slow and boring for me, and at times frustrating (from playing through SMB3 on GBA). I could always seem to click with the Sonic games (exluding Shadow, 06', Book games, and the nighttime parts of Unleashed), I always feel satisfaction from playing them whether its speeding through a stage or collecting all the chaos emeralds and turning into Super Sonic. I replayed Sonic 2 awhile back holy christ it was harder now than I remembered.
Hmmm, for me it would be SMW2 > Sonic 3 > SMW > SMB3 > Sonic 2 > SMB2> Sonic & Knuckles > Sonic 1. I don't know which series I liked better as a whole, but I was always upset that we never had a SMB3/SMW style Super Sonic World that was this insanely huge epic Sonic game. Sonic 3 w/Sonic & Knuckles comes close but the difference is that SMW is all awesome all the time while Sonic & Knuckles feels like reject S3 stages made by the C-team.

Really glad to see someone post something like this. Sonic stages are awesome in that you can speed freak them or you can explore your butt off and find tons of hidden things. The only stages where there is nothing to do but speed through are Sky Chase Zone in Sonic 2 where the screen is constantly pushing you to the left and the bonus stages in Sonic 2 and the Sphere Bonus stage in Sonic 3.

are you saying sonic is more popular than mickey mouse? anyway, my point is that sonic games aren't really taken seriously. sonic generations launched already and there hasnt been many talk about that game, while on the other hand there's people talking about the latest mario on a portable console.I wouldn't go that far, but yes, Nintendo is known for having that "magic" in their products.Nintendo's always done things the right way.

Blast Processing FTW. :o :P

What about it? With add-on chips the SNES far exceeded Genesis/MD's "blast-processing".
