Someone recently criticised me, saying that Baldur's Gate does not have a better storyline than Metal Gear Solid. I disagree.

Baldurs Gate has a great storyline, just enough plot twists to keep the sotry interesting, unparalleled writing, and great in-game humor which doesnt break the fourth wall.

Metal Gear in my opinion, has a silly contrived storyine, with too many plot twists, sillly fan-fiction elements like Cyborg Ninjas and its generally just tooover the top and unbelievable, which makes it weaker and more childish, when the story wants to seem like it adult.

Remember both of these games are supposed to have adult storylines....

In terms of narrative, what do you think has the best storyline?

Baldurs Gate had a good story and stuff, but I played it when I was pretty young and found it a bit difficult to understand, MGS got more complicated as time went on but so did my understanding of it. I choose MGS, because well like I said I understood it easier, liked it over the fantasy like setting of BG and I just feel MGS went about telling the story better.

Bit of a generalised question. IMO MGS2 brings the series average in storytelling down, and it depends if your comparing it against BG1 or BG2. I liked MGS3 much more than MGS2.

In generalistic terms, I'd say BG2 is one of the best stories in a game period. Banished elven tyrants and hampsters believed to be space gods? Hell yeah.

I voted for Baldur's Gate purely because there will be loads of Metal Gear solid fans voting for it even though many of them probably haven't even played Baldur's Gate.

Oh, come on. MGS4 is a great game, but as far as a story arc goes the Baldur's Gate series is way out of MG's league.

Its like comparing a limited-edition comic book series to Tolkien.

Baldur's Gate for the easy win here.

Baldur's Gate 2 had a good villain and two good party characters, Metal Gear Solid wins hands down. All the other BG stories weren't that good anyway (the 1st one and throne of Bhall)

I played BG when I was younger, and I'll agree that it has an excellent story (One of the best IMO). However, there's just something about cyborg ninjas, and the outrageous factor in MGS that seems to appeal to me.

Metal gear's story is better than Baldur Gate because it doesn't go from good to crap, and then crap back to good.

I prefer a solid (no pun intended) storyline, so i'll go with Metal Gear. Though I still loved Baldur's gate alot.

Baldur's Gate had a better story. But Metal Gear Solid's is more "sensational", like more twists, crazy things and WTF moments.

Metal Gear Solid. The Baldur's Gate series (for PC) are one of my favorite series (and so is Metal Gear Solid) but I didn't care much for the story in Baldur's Gate, but rather in how they presented it. I beat both of them twice, and yet I can barely remember what happened. All I know is that I had a blast playing the games, meeting new NPCs and exploring new areas.

mgs by far, so what if there are cyborg ninjas in the game, its deeper than that, some people dont want to see games as they should be seen because the dont want to accept it as a good game (not just mgs)

Baldurs Gate storyline is simply better in al lterms. There is no comparision, MGS4 gets slaughtered brutally. MSG4 storyline is like a Japanese 1 star movie, mixing all ingredients i na pot with a bad result. Goes from realistic to emotional to ridicolous.

LOL HEY GUYS LETS COMPARE THE STORY OF CRYSIS WITH TIGER WOODS GOLF.....

TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT GENRES...ONE FANTASY I.E. BADLURS GATE AND ONE MORE REALISTIC, POLITICS AND SUCH I.E. MGS4

superjim42

The fact that you used "realistic" and "MGS4" together in the same sentence pretty much disqualifies you from this conversation. Teh fail is yoos.

As Tycho of Penny Arcade said:

"I actually like the story of Metal Gear, but it's not told well. I don't care if a cutscene is long provided that it's well paced, but these cutscenes aren't simply long, they're eternal - and they feel even longer than they are because they're pure overreach. The script is insipid, didactic, and its insights are trite. The humor doesn't work, period, and it works even less against the backdrop of perpetual war."

This is exactly how I feel.

Your initial post is a bit one sided. I don't know how you can say MGS is "childish" for it's unbelievable elements, then argue that a world set in Fantasy setting is more mature, even if the idea of realism is kind of out of the window, what with Elves, magic etc... Just seems a bit double standard

Personally, I would probably prefer MGS exprience, mainly because to me, it's more immersive down to its high production values, and obvious cinematic appeal.
