Bethesda has removed the Denuvo anti-tamper tech from DOOM

WOW Great decision bathesda. now publishers are realizing that how harmful this denuvo technology is.

seriosuly more developers should stop wasting money on denuvo and spend money for game instead. take note square enix. you had huge budget but wasted on denuvo as a result of horrible optimization and unfinished product.

Something tells me that the answer is a lot more simple than that it's supposedly harmful for the end user. They probabaly have to continue to pay some sort of license fee for using the Denuvo software and Bethesda don't like being fucked as they themselves **** a lot of other people.

that's great news

These publishers need to realize that DRM only hurts the consumer and serves as a slight inconvenience for pirates. The people who pirate had no intentions of buying the game in the first place.

The CPY group cracked the Doom denuvo drm like 3 months ago.

So I'm guessing they are removing the DRM to increase sales. A lot of people nervous about the way denuvo works, and those people can now buy the game with less fears the game will stop working when the company goes out of business and stops running its activation system. And it could happen since other drm companies disappear, Securom and Safedisc aren't around anymore because they lost their effectiveness, same thing could happen with whoever makes Denuvo since its been cracked a few times now.

It makes no sense to keep it in the game when its not protecting anything anymore. Plus like i said, its a huge turn off having a double drm system on a game, with steam and denuvo on top of that.

Not sure why they even put denuvo on the game, its like 80 gb in size, anyone who has the bandwidth allowance to download an 80gb game is rich enough to buy the game.

100/100 line in Sweden with unlimited bandwidth costs around the equivalent of 25-30 US dollars. It has also housed one of the biggest piratesites ever and according to large media businesses they lose a lot of money in Sweden thanks to Piracy. Sweden is also one of the richest countries in the world. People will pirate, even if they can afford not to.

@kaealy: those are the types of people i guess who just don't buy games. A game like Doom though you have to buy it or you can't play it online so its like half a game if you just download it.

Not everyone is lucky like those crazy sweeds. My isp is running a monopoly where i live and charge me over 100 dollars a month for unrealiable wireless internet so i'm often looking at a 1 gb file and questioning if i should even download it, let alone a 80gb one.... its too bad we don't all live like a swedish kings.

I've played a shit ton of games that use Denuvo, and never would have known those games use Denuvo, if I didn't visit this board.

I hate intrusive DRM as much as the next guy, but I'm pretty sure Denuvo only affects you pirates. OP is probably just mad that he had to pay for Doom 4 lol.

I would definitely pay anything for Doom because Im loyal to id Software and i want them to get my money everytime to support these guys and for future releases. to save gaming industry from generic clones.

I bought it month after launch and i dont know if its pirated that time or not.

That's weird, I thought you've been cheer leading for it since day 1.

Anyways, did Denuvo ruin your experience with Doom 4? Did it affect your game negatively in any way?

This is very obvious with many pc gamers, yet they will came up with literally any shit but admit it.

Publishers mainly care about launch sales.

Steam itself is DRM, it still has it. Steam is technically speaking, more intrusive.

Yeah I'm just waiting for one specific example of how Denuvo inconvenienced him. As it stands he just looks another person who is upset because he didn't get a free ride.

Personally I think Denuvo is pretty great. Like I said before, I wouldn't even know that these games had it if I didn't read about it here. And if it makes more publishers feel safe about releasing their games on PC, then I'm all for it.

Still, it's unnecessary and in it's least intrusive form, Denuvo, bloatware.

I'd rather games don't come with DRM. Especially if they are already tied to a service like Steam, Origin or Uplay...

I don't want to delve into the long winded and often ill supported debate about how rampant piracy really is, how much it affects pubs, how many pirates would actually be paying customers, etc.

These discussions never go anywhere.

However, if it doesn't inconvenience me as a paying customer and if it gives the pubs more confidence in releasing on PC, then I have no issue with it. Denuvo is invisible to me, so I have no reason to complain.

Sure it would be nice if DRM just didn't exist at all, but my only issue with DRM is when I, the customer, have to deal with the headache. And that's just not the case here.

Good it's gone. But, if no-good, low-life scum didn't pirate, we wouldn't have this problem in the first place.

For a guy who so hung up on Doom you can't even spell the publisher name right. Its already been said thousand of time denuvo does not directly cause performance issues.

Makes sense for them to remove it, it's successfully did what it was there to do: Prevent the game from being pirated in the first weeks - month after the games release.

At this point, the game has been out for some time, sales have dropped to a slow trickle and the game has been pirated anyways. In other words, Denuvo did what it was supposed to, but now it no longer serves a purpose to have it implemented in Doom.

The real question will be whether Bethesda will add Denuvo to their next PC title, my guess is that they are seeing it s a solid success.

In the same article you linked, it says that this may be due to a refund clause, where the hefty fee to Denuvo may be refunded to the publisher, if the game is cracked within the first three months. However, part of the condition for the refund is removal of Denuvo.

And so as a result of relatively competent piracy, publishers will now have even more incentive to use Denuvo. If pirates consistently crack their games within the first couple months, then they will essentially be using Denuvo for free, protect their early sales without paying any fees later on. Of course, this will only continue until Denuvo tightens up their security with newer iterations of protection, but it will be a cat and mouse game designed to always incentivise publishers to use Denuvo whether the cat is in the lead or the mouse is in the lead at any given time.

At the end of the day, publishers will be happy with Denuvo if it protects either its early sales and requires no fee due to refund, or remains uncracked for well beyond 3 months. If the pirates are crafty then they would start releasing all their cracks just after the expiration of the refund clause, but that in itself is providing Denuvo their 3 month guarantee.

And now they got it all back and still benefited from the release date protection.
