I'm a bit apprehensive about the multiplayer (will need to hear more details), but still optimistic and will probably be one of my favourite games this year.

Kinda meh article, everything there has been known for quite some time now. The game's sounding epic, though.

Depends what you mean by not a fan, if you mean just never really got into it, not read the comics or anything but know little bits about it or watched the films like me then it's great. If you mean you're not a fan as in don't like Batman as a character or anything about the comics etc then it's still good but you might not enjoy it as much.

It's a very solid game on its own right, but a lot of its impact was due to it perfecting the feeling of being Batman on a videogame. But since there isn't a single person that isn't a fan of Batman, that shouldn't be an issue :]

I'm mostly curious to see what they've done with the combat. The combat of AA was one of the most brilliant gameplay features of this gen IMO. It was smooth, but at the same time slow enough to let the player plan the next move. It also it captured the character brilliantly. I've read somewhere else that they now let you fight in the air as well as using more gadgets. I really hope they haven't overcomplicated the control, but if they succeed it may be the best game of all times :o!!!

Second. An open world game works as good as its transport methods.

With driving the batmovile confirmed to not be on the game, how else are you gonna move through the open world? Swinging around? This is a Batman game, not Spiderman.

The last Batman game i played was on the Game Gear. Think it was pretty awesome.

Ive looked around and GOTY edition is £10 more than standard. Is the extra content worth it?

Actually I've read that you can move through the enviroment in a similar way as in Just Cause 2 with ur cape acting as the parachute. AA actually was open world in some sense. The entire gameworld was open to the player at the end. I agree it didn't play as an OW game, but if the world is five time as big all they need to do is to spawn some enemies/mini misssions and boom.

you're lying to yourself if you dont think it'd be cool to explore the entirety of a fully realized 3D gotham city. its about time we got to do that. flying around as superman in superman returns was AWESOME, and that game sucked.

That's because flying is an integral part of what makes Superman Superman. Exploring Gotham is not the same for Batman.

Arkham Asylum (and Arkham City) focused on exactly what makes Batman Batman, which is great hand to hand combat, stealth-taking down enemies, doing detective work (even solving the Riddler's riddles!) and the use of cool gadgets.

That's what most people expect Batman to do, not patrulling the city to stop a random car theft =S

What I think you're trying to say is that it wasn't a very large open world. which is true. It's a Metroid-styIe open world, which it kind of needs because it's a Metroid-styIe game. Nothing about the current gameplay would benefit from having you in a full city (especially since that means you don't go indoors)

I only just last night got around to unwrapping the first game after it sitting on the shelf for a fair while, I have been nothing but impressed so far, seems to be the classiest comic hero game I have played (Mark Hamill is great).

Meh it's not the size, but the lack of side missions and random events (such as spawning enemies/civilians), that distinguish AA from OW-games. But I agree with u that I can't see how the game would benefit from introducing such features. The risk is it will lose its focus.

I recomend practice on the first combat challenge as soon as u have unlocked it. At least for me it took some time before I learned to apreciate the combat system and I regret not practicing a little on the side. Will make the game more fun and more importantly, it will make u feel like Batman 8)!

Indeed. The combat is surprisingly varied, deep and precise. Shame it's difficult to appreciate in the main game, though, since just basic comands and avoid moves will let win most fights. To my understanding, Arkham City will feature crowd-fights, like the challenges, so it seems that's fixed.

I totally agree with this. I played through the game and thought the combat was mediocre because I only used three different moves. After playing the challenges where they reward variation I thought it was superb. I then played the game with my new skills and loved it. That's why I recomend SapSac to practice to not make my misstake. Same goes for the stealth actually. A couple of moves will get u through the game, but it's a dull way to play it. I hope u are correct that Arkham City will force variation more naturally.

I don't understand why devs think everything needs multiplayer now. I mean it could turn out well, Brotherhood is great, but we really don't need them. Its not like there is gonna be people playing that as their main multiplayer fix, we have our high profile shooters for that; BF, Halo, CoD.

Too bad you'll probably be missing out on one of the best games of the generation.

I'm quite glad they didn't go open-world for the sake of the fad. Arkham Asylum being a linear game allows for there to be a definitive progression to the story, and gives the director an easier way of developing the characters. Open world games are inherently against quality story-telling and character development... its the nature of the styIe of gameplay.

All I hope is that it ends up like SMG2 was to SMG. Given the effort they put into AA, I have no doubt it'll probably come true.

Where does it say open world??? 5 times larger and open world mean two different things to me... The first one kick serious arse so I'm totally ready to get my Batman beat down on again...
