Even though BF fans deny it, sales do matter. Activision doesn't have to advertise their game a full year before its coming out because they know they have the monster fanbase that are going to support and buy the next CoD game. Like they have been doing in the millions since CoD4.

Same reason why the developers hardly put any work in COD.

MW3 may sell more on launch, but the production values of BF3 are so high I cannot imagine MW3 selling the most in the long run. BF3 will be a breakthrough game that pushes Battlefield into the mainstream in the same way that COD4 transformed the Call of Duty series into the bloated behemoth it is today.ActionRemix
