Virtual reality rhythm game Beat Saber may just be the first VR title to sell more than 1 million copies: Beat Saber surpassed the one million unit milestone in February, according to Beat Games co-founder and CEO Jaroslav Beck, who credited word-of-mouth for most of the game’s success in a recent interview with Variety.

We did zero PR whatsoever,” Beck said. “We didn’t expect that it would blow up that crazy.”

A big driving force of Beat Saber’s popularity on the PC side is the ability to create custom beat maps for any song they want and even custom sabers. This feature is not supported officially, as evidence by the studio releasing new songs regularly both for free and paid.

This is a good sign. It shows people don't listen to reviewers like gospel and use their own head.

We see this in certain other games as well. To the media Stalker is an OK FPS, forgotten about. To a large sect of gamers, it's regarded as one of the best made, above the likes of Bioshock.

Mount And Blade, so-so reviews, low budget. Huge sales, millions. Loved, overwhelmingly positive on Steam.

I said it myself. Drum Hero VR is one of the few games that suit the VR platform.

I wonder whether most gamers use or even know what are Metascores.

Even if it did of the stats on their website PSVR only accounted for 640k.

It's possible those numbers are higher (their site says 4.1 million have played the game but way more have).

But doubtful it's at 1 million.

Well deserved milestone. So happy for them! They should have won GOTY during the video game awards.

According to Steamspy 200k to 500k owners. That's Steam alone. Then there is the Oculus store and PSVR.

It looks pretty fun. I can also see why it would be appealing to streaming culture. And music is something that has a very broad appeal of course.

Also: Best Star Wars game this gen, thanks EA!

Excellent news!

VR is going places. Still had a ways to go, but I am happy knowing it is being taken seriously and small studios, not large ones, seem to be thriving.

It's clearly a finished product unlike a lot of mainstream non-VR console releases so I am not even remotely surprised.

It's crazy that the game was only made by three people. I think one of the guys doubled as the programmer and the composer.

Also, a Variety article said they aren't entirely sure Beat Saber was the first because Skyrim VR sold quite a bit too, but when reached for actual figures, Bethesda never got back to them. But there's no doubt Beat Saber is one of the most popular VR games out there.

Yeah they started as two developers and a musician, but they’re a little bigger now (but still fairly small in absolute terms).

Beat Saber has five times as many user reviews on Steam. Skyrim isn’t available on the Oculus store, while Beat Saber is. Skyrim is 2 to 3 times as expensive. I find it highly unlikely that it has sold a million copies.

If only there were more Beat Saber setups in malls and public conventions. The game sells itself really easily. The few malls I've seen it in tends to attract huge crowds.

Some of the songs can get really fast too like this:

Now I'm awaiting an Oculus Quest release.

I bought the PSVR beat saber combo last year but I never really used the VR set to play beat saber cause i am scared of accidentally throw the move controller. Sony really should update their vr controller design.

Its a game that is simple and takes advatage of VR and motion in its core gameplay. Games like this imo is what VR is good at, making games like skyrim and doom VR is crap and not needed.

Well we have known for a while (a long long time actually) that gaming critics are sh*t and can be easily swayed by publishers/ad revenue/clicks.

I am still waiting for a damn price drop.

$40 Canadian is too much.

If they are reading this, put it on sale for $30 and I’ll buy it.
